Welcome to my first dining review. It will probably be a little slow to get off the ground but I want to start it up so I get it done! I owe all of you DISers for your help in making our vacation and our dining really great. :worship:

Our cast includes:

Eeyore :eeyore:, aka DH, 45, lover of meat and vegetables, does not like seafood

Tigger :tigger:, aka me, 43, lover of food of all kinds and experienced fine diner

Pirate boy pirate:, 10, Disney dining adult, with a good deal of finickiness but definitely an adult sized appetite

Princess princess:, 7, happiest girl on Earth, at WDW and everywhere. She ate well and never complained.

Court Jester :jester:, 4, a very happy boy who did not eat all his food, but really, really, really enjoyed his itzakadoodles :rotfl:

Sorry all ... those 503 errors are *killing* me ... :scared1:

We were at WDW from 12/9 to 12/16 and will be reviewing the following table service restaurants, in order of our dining:

Crystal Palace (dinner)
Yak & Yeti (very late lunch)
50's Prime Time Cafe (lunch)
Chef Mickey's (breakfast)
Coral Reef (lunch)
Artist Point (dinner, for 2 :lovestruc)
Cinderella's Royal Table (just us girls :cutie:)
Le Cellier (dinner)
The Wave (dinner)

We also visited and will review the following counter service and snack establishments:

Contempo Cafe
Harambe Fruit Market
The Writer's Shop
Cantina De San Angel
Tangerine Cafe
Pecos Bill
Main Street Bakery
Columbia Harbour House
Auntie Gravity's
Aloha Isle
Magic Kingdom Ice Cream Cart

I'll make a couple of general observations about dining with 5 people in WDW before starting on the reviews (and hope the server cooperates with that). First, it often comes up that table service dining takes a long time. If you are eating where you are playing, or where you plan to plan later, it is not a really big difference in our experience. I will be going over receipts and our reservation times, but in general it took us about 1.5 hours to eat table service, start to finish and about 1 hour to eat counter service, start to finish. Well worth it, for our family, to have a nice rest while waiting, though since we had two adults, we were often able to grab a table while waiting in line for counter service. :woohoo:

Second, since this also comes up often, we had no long waits -- and we tried like heck to make it 15 minutes ahead of our ADR, but often we pulled up just in time. Stay tuned for the last adventure in "dining" -- we almost missed our Magical Express spending those last snack credits and it makes for a great story, in rhyme.

Finally, many people complain about the expense of dining in WDW. We were on the plan and we did buy a few things out of pocket: a few snacks where our card was not accepted, some appetizers, I had a couple of adult beverages:thumbsup2 and so on. Our "deal" was adults eat & play at kid prices, which I think will end up very close, for our family to 40% on lodging and given that we stayed at the Contemporary, I think that we did well. :goodvibes

Even if we'd been paying full freight though, coming from Metro Boston though, we did not have sticker shock at all with respect to the prices. It costs $60 to have Chinese take out near us and $40 to go to McDonald's with the whole family (which I try not to do very often) :lmao: For my relatives in the middle of Illinois -- whole different ballgame. And perhaps the reason I was often being warned about food being "spicy", not. :rolleyes1

There are some pictures ... but not of everything. DH got kinda cranky about me taking pictures of his food. :rotfl: And before I begin, I want to thank those DISers who have reviewed before me. :worship: We got some great reservations and managed to avoid any real dining disasters. Thanks everyone!

Count me in for this one! I get the Chinese food thing, I am originally from Boston and of course we have to order one of everything and can walk out of our local joint with a huge box of food for 4 people and $125 later :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Joining in, can't wait to see how everything was. We plan on eating at many of the same places in May.

I can't wait to read all about your reviews and see some pics! I agree that the DDP is well worth it's $$ for our family, at least.

After checking in, which despite a late flight was around 12:30pm, our room was READY:cool1:. So we went up to check it out and leave a few things ... including our stroller ... oh wait, this isn't the trip report. :rotfl:

So we wandered into the Contempo Cafe, feeling mighty hungry -- plane "food" is really a stretch these days. :rotfl2:

I will get the pics up soon (that and the Christmas holidays have delayed this) but we overbought, just a tad, at 1:27, especially since we had a 4:50 ADR at Crystal Palace.

We ate:

Eeyore: Chicken Caesar salad, chocolate chip cookie, water
Tigger: Beef Flatbread & side of green beans, orange juice, water
Pirate Boy: Pepperoni Flatbread & side of fries, brownie, apple juice
Princess: Chicken nuggets with fries & grapes, apple juice
Court Jester: Chicken nuggets with fries & a chocolate chip cookie, apple juice

The chicken Caesar salad ended up being Eeyore's favorite salad, he had several over the course of the trip. That picture is a of an empty bowl! :lmao: sorry.

I enjoyed my beef flatbread but the cheese was sweet somehow, I didn't order it again during our stay. I like my entree *savory*, thank you very much. Still, I didn't leave a single morsel. The green beans were cold (on purpose) and absolutely yummy. So juicy we had a few laughs because I was squirting my family when I ate them. :lmao:

Pirate Boy consumed the brownie so fast, I don't have a pic of that either. Like Eeyore, he enjoyed the heck out of his pepperoni flatbread, it was the first of many this trip.

Princess and Court Jester made quick work of their chicken nuggets. They were good, but 4 is simply not enough nuggets for either of them! :rolleyes1 Then they started in on Pirate Boy's side of fries. He complained a bit, but I was right that we had enough food altogether to feed everyone and nothing left over. :woohoo:

Full, but with ample energy, we ascended the escalator and took our first monorail trip to the Magic Kingdom.

5 counter service credits and 2 snack credits down, my receipt say this little feast would have cost $51.55 had we been paying OOP.

Up next ... Crystal Palace for Dinner.

Even if we'd been paying full freight though, coming from Metro Boston though, we did not have sticker shock at all with respect to the prices. It costs $60 to have Chinese take out near us and $40 to go to McDonald's with the whole family (which I try not to do very often)

I could not agree more with this. I've never once had sticker shock about anything except for perhaps the occasional adult beverage, but if you spend the evening in Boston they are pretty much on par. When someone from my area says "so and so" told me it was expensive my first question is always where do they live, ;) lol.

I'm subscribing.

We arrived right on time, barely for our 4:50 ADR after taking in a few Magic Kingdom attractions. It was swimming in people and it took me a few minutes to find the window to sign in. The window is tucked into a corner near the door at the left as you look at the Crystal Palace. If I understand correctly, it is closed now for renovations, hopefully that will still be the check in after the renovation.

It took several minutes for us to be seated, one of our longest waits, but not more than about 15 minutes, I don't think. Still, we were hungry again and happy to be meeting some of our favorite characters.

I did quite a bit of looking around at what might be done as a renovation. My suspicion is that the biggest thing is cleaning the windows. There are zillions of windows and cleaning them has got to be a royal pain in the rear when you are serving from 8am until 9pm (or more!). It is work that probably really isn't best done in the dark. :lmao: Of course, flooring and kitchen work is almost a certainty. Upgrading kitchens to more modern equipment reduces labor costs and increases food quality.

Speaking of which, I had seen very mixed reviews about the food and was quite cautiously optimistic. Put me down as a Crystal Palace dinner lover!:thumbsup2 The food was the correct temperature (hot and cold), frequently replenished and absolutely delicious.

My personal favorites were:

Ancho Chile Rubbed Atlantic Salmon -- my mouth is watering as a type this, that stuff was to die for. I had two servings.

Thai Curry Mussels -- also scrumptious. So good I passed on the peel and eat shrimp. Normally, I love shrimp, but peel and eat is designed to slow you down on the buffet and the mussels were easier to eat. :rolleyes1

Fire Roasted Prime Rib -- perfectly cooked and sliced nice and thin. Medium to Medium Rare, but certainly there was some for folks who like it more well done.

Wild mushroom and chicken pasta with basil asiago cream sauce. Just like it sounds. Chicken was tender and the cream sauce was lovely.

For sides and salads I enjoyed:

Sweet plantain, cucumber and corn salad -- nicely spiced and perfectly fresh

medley of vegetables with balsamic glaze -- lovely, not over cooked and lightly flavored. Balsamic can be overwhelming, this wasn't.

Cinnamon and Lemon Infused Balsamic Rice -- I had this with an item that isn't on the list from All Ears, it was a chicken in sauce, probably Indian inspired and very tasty.

Mediterranean pasta salad -- also yummy

Garlic Redskin smashed potatoes -- absolutely just right with the prime rib and a bit of gravy.

I ate two full (but not heaping ) servings from the buffet, including at least one roll from their selection. This would be my sole complaint, no real butter. I hate margarine. :snooty:

Finally, I had a bit of something sweet, but it isn't popping out from the list. It was good. I remember Eeyore commenting that the deserts were perfectly portioned to have several.:rotfl2:

The kids all ate a selection that made them happy :goodvibes, mostly chicken fingers, mac & cheese and ice cream. Pirate Boy had some stuff, notably mashed potatoes from the adult buffet line. Eeyore enjoyed the buffet too, but since I don't have pictures (he doesn't like his food photographed.)

Bottom line is that there was something for everyone and we all rolled out fat and happy. My check says it was 5:31 when we paid and we left our wonderful server Michael a 20% tip. I'm sure tips are pooled here and there is a lot of work being done with characters and so on. Ordinarily, I don't tip more than 10% for a buffet.

Our out of pocket cost for this meal would have been $139.47 plus the $26.19 tip. We paid the tip by room charge and spent 3 adult and 2 child TS entitlements. Down to 18 and 12. Completely worth the cost, considering the character interaction. For just the meal, I would have felt that it was expensive, considering what Pirate Boy ate, but I am probably being pretty hard on the place -- he was happy! And I was really insistent that we would NOT be wasting valuable park time waiting on characters.
