Sorry in advance for the lengthy post, but I have to explain! :thumbsup2

Our most recent visit to DLR was July of 2010. After we returned, I just found myself feeling like I was really "done" with DLR for a long while.

We had treated my husband's parents and our 2 nieces (that DH's parents have been raising since birth) to 5 days in the parks. The nieces were 8 & 9 at the time, and had never been to ANY amusement park, let alone Disney. The in-laws had not been to Disneyland in more than 30 years, and I really, REALLY wanted them to get to experience it with ALL of their grandchildren. MIL is not in great health, and hasn't been for a really long time. So when I received my inheritance from MY grandmother (thanks, Grandma! :)), I decided I would use it to treat another grandmother to special time with her grandkids.

The trip really was very good....for what it was. It was wonderful to spend time with everyone, the nieces were WONDERFUL and sweet and amazingly well-behaved. So although there were many really positive things about the trip, it was SOOOOO much work for DH, myself, and our 2 oldest children (ages 18 & 12). MIL was in a wheelchair, which my husband was pushing, and my 2 oldest had to help me keep track of our 2 youngest PLUS the nieces (the nieces were just in awe of everything, therefore they had an impossibly difficult time focusing on staying with the group as we walked, etc., so my 2 oldest and I had to work very hard to keep them from getting lost every 10 seconds). FIL didn't want to pay $15 every day for parking, so we did a lot of "dropping half the group off and heading back for the rest" kind of thing most days - which in and of itself was exhausting and SOOO terribly inconvenient). They are from AZ and July was unseasonably cold, so there was a lot of complaining about the weather, etc. That sort of thing. Still, I know my in-laws and the nieces had a fantastic experience, and I'm very happy for that.

However, by the time we got home from Disneyland, we felt like we hadn't been there at all! So much of the trip was just work, and we never had a moment's rest. It's no wonder that DH and I felt like we could not handle another DLR trip for a long time. It just seemed like the magic was gone, and that maybe our best times at DLR were behind us. Which was really sad, because our family has been serious DLR fans for more than a decade.

But we changed our minds this week! We are now planning our "best Disneyland vacation EVER", lol! We realized that our best family memories of DLR don't have to be over....so now we are determined to go back and make some more! :)

To that end, we will be visiting alone this time....our 4 kids and us. We are going to stay at a hotel that is within very close walking distance so that we don't have to deal with the parking structure (because we saw WAAAAY too much of it on our last visit!). We're going to eat in the parks for every meal so that we don't have to prepare food to take in, and carry that food around all day (which we had to do on our last trip in order for me to be able to afford to take both families). And for the first time ever, we are going to purchase SIX day PH's (we usually do 5).

I'm so thrilled to feel excited about Disneyland again, so I just wanted to share! :cool1:

Good for you. Taking the in-laws and making it a huge family trip, thats awesome. And now, to reward you and your family with a trip, COOL. NEVER give up on the MAGIC at DLR. :cool1:

We are from NoCal as well, and will be there in only 19 days. My family and my sisters family will be going. Tried to get our parents to go, but all we got was reason's why not to go.

BUT, hopefully we can go back in July 2011, and this time bring my daughter and with our granddaughter, who will be 15 months old by then.

Have blast next time you go.

It sounds like you have all the ingredients for an awesome trip! :wizard:

Thanks, everybody!

I know our trip is 9 months away, but I am already so excited about it, and so are the kids! My 9 year old daughter, who apparently paid entirely too much attention while I was planning that last trip with the in-laws, is already compiling daily itineraries, LOL!!!

@GOOFYDADUDE - Hope you have a great time on your upcoming trip!

I totally know what about mean about a trip seeming like "work". An Ex of mine took his parents to WDW a few years ago. I was excited since it was my first time there and I really enjoyed his parents. Our trip started off every day about 3 hours behind schedule. Constant complaining about the heat, long lines, having to eat and drink every 30 minutes. The whole trip was just a lot of work and I barely have any memories of that trip. Put a bad taste in my mouth for WDW for quite a while.

Recently, we took my partners mother and best friend and we had an amazing time. They knew to give us space from time to time so we could have our own time in the parks.

Glad you've changed your mind and are going back. :) We're already planning our trip for next may.

I know how you feel. We did a large family reunion - about 20 of us - to WDW in 2008. Everything got left to me to plan. I was the one up at 5 AM Denver time to call for our dining reservations on the first day we were allowed. It can be a big job and somewhat of a letdown when you finally get there and people complain about petty things. Hoep you really enjoy your trip next year.

Wow, I guess I should quit complaining then, LOL!!! Seriously though, it's really nice to read the similar experiences of others. I absolutely ADORE my in-laws, and I will never, ever regret bringing them in on that vacation. And I know they realized too, that it was pretty much nothing but work for several of us so that they could enjoy it, and I know they appreciated that very much. But, like you said, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Now I realize that it was just exhaustion, and that we really can look forward to going back and having a great time.

That's great that you got to go again with your partner's mom and friend, and had a fantastic time! Is your trip in May to DLR or WDW?

20!!! Holy cow! I think I REALLY need to quit complaining! (My group was half that!)

Thanks for the well wishes, and I think you were extremely brave to take on the task of planning a WDW trip for that many people. :worship:

We'll be going to DLR. We went to WDW in April of this year and although we had a great time, it's not the resort for us. We went to DLR in October as well. We prefer DLR so much more. We try to go twice a year at least. WDW will be a once in a VERY great while sort of thing. :)

I believe that the less thinking/planning that you do, the more you will enjoy the park. Stay in a hotel where you will be most comfortable and take the shuttle/trolley into the park. It is a lot less walking and negotiating at the end of the day. Well worth the pittance paid.

Oh yay good for you!! :yay: you can never have to much Disneyland!!! In fact there is no such thing!! :tinker: You will have a fabulous trip!

..also reminder to you Op and other trip planners, I have Christmas maps, they are the DCA and DLR park maps with the Christmas holiday covers. They are super cute too!!

Just pm me if you’d like one! Also if you want to see the covers, I have a photo of them already up in my map thread, please see the map link in my signature! Thanx!

We haven't done WDW yet. Every year we talk about it, but then I read all the bits about taking buses between parks and the millions of different places to eat, etc., and I get exhausted just from reading about it, lol. Plus, I hate humidity. I think we'll be better off waiting a few more years to tackle WDW. I hope your trip in May is awesome!

I don't mind paying for the ART, but after reading lots of info from people who found it unreliable, and then finding a hotel with rooms big enough for our family of 6 that is less than a 10 minute walk from the gates, we're just going to walk. It will actually simplify things for us (no buckling kids into the car, etc.) :goodvibes

Thanks, Funball! You're always SO happy around here with your DLR talk, so thanks for chiming in with good wishes! :) I was SOO bummed when we came back in July and we both felt like we did. We used to live very near the parks and had AP's for a couple of years, so we were in the parks sometimes up to 3 times per week. Naturally, we made a ton of really special parenthood memories there, so it really is our family's favorite place to be.

Our youngest will be tall enough for Indy when we go back this time, and our family is SOOO entirely excited that for the first time EVER, we will all get to ride Indy together as a family! It's so weird to think that in the 10+ years we've been going to the parks (over 100 times in all), there are still rides that we have never ridden together! That realization was part of what made us consider that instead of feeling like all of our "best" times in the parks were behind us, that we could actually go and have a better time than we'd EVER had. My oldest is even going to miss a week of classes (she'll be a junior in college next year) and fly out for this special trip! :yay:

P.S. It's so cool that you offer maps to people! I don't need any myself (we just pulled out the dozen or so that we brought home from our trip in July and the kids are LOVING them), although I'm sure the holiday ones are fun!

YEA!! Have a great time and I know you will. All the planning is half the fun :)

Yay ~ how fantastic! So this visit will be sometime in September right?? I'm sure the time will fly by and you'll be back at Disney soon!

Thanks! And yes, the planning is always fun. This time will be more fun though because it involves planning to keep things convenient and relaxing, whereas last time it involved planning to keep costs down (so that I could afford both families), and that was hard work. Also, I had to create an itinerary for each and every day because the in-laws wanted to "do everything", lol, and since it was high season, I spent literally weeks getting those itineraries worked out. We're not going to bother with itineraries, etc., this time, so hopefully it will be a much more relaxing trip! YAY! :yay:

Yep, September! Hopefully crowds will be thinner than what we encountered in July (but I guess you never know), and warmer, too (we were hitting highs of about 70 during our Summer trip, and mornings were really chilly).

After we got back the last time, I thought I'd NEVER be able to get this excited about another visit to DLR again, so it has been so fun to feel this way, lol. I can't wait!

Aw ~ but see I don't mind cooler weather *as long as we're prepared for it - I hate being hot. This past July was cool and we were not prepared ~ I had to buy DD a $22 Mickey sweatshirt - that she also brought with her for our very recent visit! But I will hope for warm weather and thin crowds for you :wizard:

Yeah, we weren't prepared for the cool weather, either. I'd brought everyone a long sleeve shirt (and my daughter had a very thin pullover sweater), so they wore that over their T-shirt every day. But yeah, it was chilly in the mornings with shorts!

My in-laws, from AZ, were utterly FREEZING, though. They went out the first night and bought sweats, lol.

I used to love going to DLR when it was cool, or even cold, back when we lived nearby and would go every week (sometimes multiple times per week). But now that we've moved away and have actually spent several Winters in "real" cold (we lived in Boise for 5 years), I want to visit DLR when it's nice and warm. :)
