Hi We go to Disney twice a year and we have always wanted to go to Universal but have sticker shock. When I priced things out this morning it appears to be about $1,000 for a 2 day pass for a family of 4 but $1200 for an annual pass. So to me it seems obvious to get two trips out of the AP. My DH is concerned because he has vertigo issues and likely will not go on much and just wants to see the Harry Potter areas. What do you suggest? If we buy tickets and decide we like Universal, can we upgrade to APs while we are there? Are they good for exactly 365 days? Do tickets and APs usually go up in February like WDW? Thanks.

Just like Disney they front end load the prices. So it's expensive to go for a couple days, but actually outstanding value if you go for a week or more.

I believe you can upgrade your tickets to AP's at anytime. The AP's are good for 365 days from the first time you use them, not from the purchase date.

The AP's seem like the way to go for your situation. If you go to Disney a couple times a year you would now have the option to slide over to Universal for a day at anytime with no additional cost.

And if you stay at Universal owned hotels, those AP's will pay the cost difference in themselves very quickly off of hotel savings. We are going to finish up with 25 park days over five different stays by the time our AP year is over.

You can upgrade a multi-day ticket to an AP any time before the last day...so if you have a two day ticket, as long as you upgrade before the end of that second day, you are good.

FYI we just got back yesterday from 2 days at Universal and almost all the rides made me very dizzy (Escape from Gringotts, Harry Potter's Forbidden Journey, Kong, Jimmy Fallon, Minions). I don't even have "vertigo" per se, but virtual reality rides make me dizzy. I am still feeling the effects today. I'd see what your husband thinks before going the AP route
