Ok, I know it's 2017, but I'm going to post a series of Disney World trip reports I created during my 2008 trip. Keep in mind that these were written almost 9 years ago, and there will be differences in the descriptions of some things that are either now updated or completely gone from WDW. So, without further ado, here we go.

EDIT: I'll be adding some audio and images to my posts, so you can see and hear what I was actually experiencing. These are all MY recordings using my IC recorder with a binaural microphone. I hope you like the recordings! If you want to hear and see ALL of the recordings I have made during my various trips to Disney over the last 30 years or so, please visit parkmagicradio.ca.

Day 1 - Traveling to Orlando

Today was quite a long day. After getting myself and Glenn up at 2:30 AM, we got ready to go. He's driving me to the airport. Amazingly, neither of us had any difficulty getting up! Glenn's phone alarm went off at 2:30, and about a minute later, my radio alarm came on, so with all that noise, it was fairly easy to get up. I had been almost wide awake at about 10 after 2. We both had a tea and left my place about 3:15. But I can tell you now, having been awake now since 2:30 AM this morning, it's now 9:32 PM eastern time and I'm completely bagged! I thought I better write this before I go to bed so I don't forget anything.

There's no traffic from my house to the airport at 4:00 AM! Check-in was good and fairly fast. Customs was a bit of a hassle. The US Customs guard kept me waiting and waiting, while he was busily typing stuff into my record. He then says, "You've got such a common name." I nodded. About a minute later he asks where I work and I tell him, and asks me where I was going. So I told him that too, so he stamps my passport and I was off again, this time through to Security. The alarm went off as I passed through! Turns out it was just my belt loop. The guard tells me he's going to put his finger in between the belt loop and the top of my pants, I guess to check for drugs or bombs or something. :-) Like I could fit anything in there! It's a long trip to gate E99! When I got there, I had a scone and a tea to keep me sated for a little while.

The airline trip from Vancouver to Seattle was a quick trip - in less than an hour, we were up and down. The next gate was practically right there, when I got off the plane, so I picked up a bottle of water and a couple of chocolate bars as snacks to eat on the airplane in case I got hungry. An hour later, we were boarding the plane and taxiing down to the runway!

The plane trip was nothing spectacular. It was pretty much like any other airline trip with that really annoying emergency procedures announcement and the usual minor turbulence. I was a bit hungry, so I bought their ham and cheese scrambled eggs with hashbrowns. I tell ya, for 5 bucks it wasn't worth it, but at least I wasn't hungry after I ate it, and I was thankful for that. I don't think I could have lasted another hour without any food. I forgot to have breakfast at home this morning!

When I got to MCO, I took the airport shuttle over to Baggage Claim B. Poor Jack Wagner's voice is no longer the voice that greets you as you take the shuttle over to the baggage claim area. I used my IC Recorder to record the voice, but the replacement voice just doesn't have the same flair as Jack's. You'll be able to hear it as soon as I post it. A Magical Express representative was at the bottom of the escalator ushering Disney Resort guests to take the elevator down to the first level. So I took the elevator down and was directed by another representative to the counter service area. Upon getting there, the service was really fast and friendly. The cast member asked me what hotel I was going to, so I handed her my vouchers. She then said, "Going to Port Orleans French Quarter, and being picked up on the 16th from the All Star Music Resort, correct?" NO! I had to explain that I was being picked up on the 16th from Coronado Springs! She looked at me kind of puzzled and reiterated that they were picking me up from All Star Music. Again, I corrected her, so she had to get a supervisor to look at the reservation. He came over and said, "We're picking you up from All Star Music on the 16th." Again I said, that was incorrect and am supposed to be coming back from Coronado Springs. He then asked if All Star Music had at any time been on my itinerary at any time, and I politely said no. He then changed my reservation for pick up to Coronado Springs and I was on my way. They then direct you to the "red carpet" area where you again get ushered to the bus loading area. Don't forget to keep your Express ticket handy, because when I was told to take a certain bus, I just proceeded to get onto the bs, and then I hear, "Excuse me sir, excuse me!" coming from behind. I then turn around and one of the cast members asks me for my voucher. So I show it to him and he looks at it for a minute and says, "Have a nice trip". I think what they're all actually doing here is scanning the bar codes that are on the voucher, just to ensure that you are who you say you are and that you're going where you're supposed to be going. No big deal. Only two minor setbacks to deal with upon arrival.

The bus ride was quite nice. The video that you see on the bus on the way to your hotel is almost the same one I have a video of. The only exceptions were the new name for Disney-MGM Studios (to Disney's Hollywood Studios) and a few other minor things. It's all fed to the bus by a GPS, so depending on where you are on the road the video will start and stop by itself. Cool, eh?

IMG_7046.JPG IMG_7047.JPG

Upon arrival at the hotel about 25 minutes later, I was the only one getting off a bus full of about 8 people in total. I got off the bus and the driver, I noticed, was sort of hanging around waiting for a tip. If I am paying this much for my trip and the bus service is free, and they get paid by the Disney company, I don't really feel like I should tip him. In the book I have, it says tipping is acceptable only if you receive "exceptional" service. Taking a bus ride isn't really an exceptional service. Maybe I'm just getting cheap in my old age... If any of you disagree with me, let me know if I should have tipped! Also, aren't the tips divided up between all cast members who do a similar job? So I get to the hotel, and it's raining cats and dogs, and there's a little bit of thunder and lightning. But I loved it! There were people wandering around with those cheap rain covers. I didn't mind the rain at all; as a matter of fact, I thought it was quite refreshing.

When I arrived at the counter, there was a problem because they thought that I only had the Magic Your Way Park Hopper pass with no dining option, yet clearly it states on my itinerary from Marlin that I have a 10-day dining option included. So the CM excuses herself to go check this out and she takes my itinerary in the back room with her and appears a couple of times in about 15 minutes and says, "Sorry about the wait, it won't be long now." I was totally OK with this and I knew everything would be OK as long as I had proof that was what I purchased. So everything worked out in the end, and I got all of my information about the resort and where everything is. I got room 2147, about a 2 minute walk, if that, from the reception and check in area! The resort itself isn't huge, like the Coronado Springs resort, but the Port Orleans Riverside shares some of the amenities, so that makes it a bit larger and more interesting!

I put my knapsack and laptop in the room, and went for a walk around the grounds. While I was walking around, I saw a couple of huge flashes of lightning and heard some pretty loud thunder! They closed the pool because of the lightning and ushered everyone off the pool deck. I guess they do that for the safety of the guests and lifeguard cast members so they don't get struck by lightning being near water and out in the open.

While wandering around, I went to the gift shop and in one corner of the shop they had an easel board set up with some trivia questions on it, and there was a woman standing beside me and she said that out of all 10 questions on the board, she knew all of them except one, and I said I also knew all of them except one, but after guessing I got it right. The question was where would you see a mansion much like the Haunted Mansion elsewhere in the country (or something like that)? It was a multiple choice question and I picked "B" and the woman picked "A" and both were right! That is because you would see some in California and I guessed the real right one, option "B" but now I forget what the answer was. Oh well. After going through all 10 questions, the CM working in the gift shop heard us and proceeded to ask more trivia questions - about 40 in all, and the woman and I took turns at answering them, and yelling the answers out if we knew what they were. When the CM was done asking questions, she and I received a "Magical Moments" certificate!!! It's a magical moment that I will always remember, and it's worth framing!

I then went for dinner over to the hotel restaurant and had chicken parmesean with linguini and a side salad. Amazingly, it wasn't that bad! But now I'm stuffed!

So now I'm back in my room where my luggage has arrived while I was out answering trivia questions and I've unpacked my shirts and put some stuff in the drawers, and I'm writing this and watching "Family Guy" until I'm ready to crash. I need sleep!

More tomorrow!

Day 2 - October 7, 2008

Started the day by sleeping in until about 7:30 AM and heading out to the Magic Kingdom without breakfast. I figured that I could pick up something at the park for breakfast and use one of my daily meal allowances for it, but nothing in the park opens for breakfast except the Crystal Palace, and by the time I wanted something to eat I found out from the CMs at Tusker House that they didn't open until noon and wasn't going to walk all the way back to the Crystal Palace. So I wandered around a bit more, went on some rides, did some recording and took lots of pictures. This day, I took 444 photos! Well, I actually took way more than that, but I deleted a bunch of the blurry ones.

My little IC recorder is great!!! Although when I have my mic plugged in, and I go through a breezy part of an attraction or stand in the breeze watching something with it recording, the sound fades out. I'm just now listening to The Haunted Mansion recording I did today and there are a couple of parts that got missed but you'd never notice it if you weren't listening for it. The problem is, I know it's there, but the sound quality on my laptop is superb! I wonder what it will be like when I play it on my computer!

I love taking my time as I'm walking around at the parks! A couple of times I got caught in a cloud burst, but who cares? I loved every minute of it! One of those showers had me eating my Dole Whip float in the rain! Again, who cares? I was having the time of my life!

The Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party was tonight at the MK, so around 6:45 I left before the 7:00 festivities began occurring. It was getting way too croweded as I stood eating my vanilla ice creme cone on Main Street. So I headed for the exit and ended up taking the monorail over to Epcot. I wanted to check out the new Spaceship Earth and the new Finding Nemo Ride at The Seas with Nemo & Friends. Seems there's quite a bit of new stuff since the last time I was here! The Nemo ride is AWESOME! Watch out for the jellyfish and have a blast riding the EAC, dude! They also moved the Turtle Talk with Crush from The Land to The Seas with Nemo & Friends, with good reason, but the theatre is a LOT smaller than it was at The Land. But, it's still funny as heck!

I also saw Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor for the first time today. Here I was, one of the first few into the theatre, and I was taking a couple of pictures of it (without the flash, mind you!) and I hear a cute little jingle and then everyone starts laughing! So I lower the camera from my eye and look at the screen and I see myself! So, I smiled and gave the "thumbs-up" signal! I was the first one on camera! Tee hee! Monsters Inc Laugh Floor is hilarious! There was one guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt who got picked on constantly. The emcee's running joke was, "LOOK at that shirt!" and would get a huge laugh every time! It's based on the same technology as Turtle Talk with Crush. Obviously someone is sitting in the back looking at the audience speaking into a microphone, but the voices are somehow digitized to sound like the monsters. I'm planning to see it again! Some baby was crying right in front of me, so I want to get a clean recording.

TIP: If you want more time on any particular attraction, look for someone in a wheelchair who wants to get on the ride, and get as close to them as you can. This way, if you're like me and you're recording, you can spend more time recording as they slow down or stop the attraction to get the wheelchair guests onto the ride!

Nearing the Illuminations show at Epcot, I headed toward the exit, but I decided I wanted to go on Spaceship Earth again, so I did, and by the time I got out, Illuminations was just ending, so had ample time to get to the bus area without the bus being too crowded. Unfortunately, the bus waited so long that it filled up anyway and I had to fight my way out as soon as I got to the hotel.

But here I am now, relaxing, copying my pictures and sounds to the laptop, and I'm just about to go to bed. No rush to do anything tomorrow, but may end up at Epcot again, this time for a normal day at the park. I plan to sample some of the unique foods around World Showcase during the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

Day 3 coming up!

Day 3 - October 8, 2008

Wow, this humidity is almost unbearable! During the day it's heating up quite a bit, but the first day I was here, it was very comfortable. For some reason, the humidity shot way up and the temperature is soaring.

Spent the day at Epcot, and sampled some of the foods around World Showcase. I passed by the margaritas because they were $8.50!!!

Tried to go back to Magic Kingdom to see SpectroMagic and Wishes, but the day was cut short by a bit of a thunderstorm. I got to the Magic Kingdom but decided that because it was raining that I would make my way back to Riverside and walk to French Quarter if it wasn't raining. So instead of going into the park and getting soaked, I decided it wasn't worth it so took the nearest bus back to the hotel. During the ride back, I was watching the lightning outside the bus. It was really cool! But there was virtually no thunder until I got to the boat launch at Riverside. As we were standing in line for the boat, there was some pretty intense lightning, and a small rumble of thunder. I thought for sure we were going to get it, but the weather channel stated it was north of Disney World and it almost completely passed by, but dumped quite a bit of rain first.

When I got back to the hotel, the rain stopped and I was able to walk around and take some pictures of the grounds. I have been experimenting with different settings on the camera and have found that putting the setting on "P" is not always good. "Auto" is good for daytime, and "C" is good for nighttime shots. So far I've only been taking pictures on the "P" setting. As I was taking photos (using the tripod), I ended up in the gift shop and offered to take a picture of the Cast Members working. I took the shot of three of them together and offered to email the picture to one of them so she could share it with the two others. They were very accommodating, to say the least.

IMG_7860.JPG

The audio I recorded today sounds pretty good, but we got caught on the monorail going from the TTC to the Magic Kingdom. They had to shut down the entire monorail train and restart it again to fix the computer system for some reason. We were on the track between the TTC and the Contemporary for almost 10 minutes. Then we got to the other side of the Contemporary and got stuck again, but this time only for a few minutes. I recorded most of it, but opted not to keep it because it's mostly little kids screaming at the top of their lungs and adults shouting over the voices of other adults.

Take a listen: http://parkmagicradio.ca/#song.php?action=show_song&song_id=153 (click the 'Play' icon next to 'Action')

So now I'm back in my hotel room, about to crash. Thinking of taking a day off tomorrow and then on Friday going to Disney-MGM (Disney's Hollywood Studios).

More to come!

Day 4 - October 9, 2008

Started the day off late after sleeping in a bit this morning. Ended up going to Disney's Hollywood Studios. There's quite a few new things there, like Toy Story Mania 4-D, which had a 90 minute Standby wait time and they'd run out of Fastpasses at around 1:00 PM. By the time I wanted to go on, it was nearing 4:30 PM-ish, and I asked the CM standing in front if the wait time was accurate and she said it would be likely between 60 and 90 minutes in line. I wasn't prepared to stand that long in line, so I went to try and find something else to do. I'm hoping that in the next day or two, I can get in to see Toy Story Mania. If I can get there early in the morning, I'll get a Fastpass.

IMG_7891.JPG IMG_7927.JPG

It was so crowded today at Disney's Hollywood Studios that I didn't go on a lot of rides or see a lot of attractions. Of the attractions I did see or go on, were most of the originals, like Muppet-Vision 3D, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which I think they cut short. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the scene where Ariel gets her legs and Prince Eric is lying on the 'beach' unconscious, well, she gets her legs and moments later Eric wakes up and says, "Ariel!". They missed the whole part where she even meets him for the first time, and then the show is over! I don't remember the show being that short, but the lineup was short for me and that's why I saw it. And to make matters worse, Ariel was flat.

IMG_7900.JPG

Also walked through the Disney Gallery, some of the shops and looked at watches. The watch I saw at Epcot wasn't at DHS, so I opted not to buy one. I had lunch at Prime Time 50's Cafe, which I made a reservation for just after entering the park. My reservation time was 2:55 PM, but I was hoping to get in a little earlier. I was told that if I wander over there, I *might* get in before my reservation. When I go there, I told the CM behind the counter that I had a reservation for 2:55, but wanted to know if I could get in a bit earlier, and she said it would be a 45 minute wait, even if I went to sit at the bar. So, I went elsewhere and did some other things until my reservation time. When I got there, I was seated 15 minutes early. I had the pot roast for 'lunch' and the brownie and ice cream dessert topped with whipped cream, M&Ms, whipped cream with carmel corn on top. It was WAY too rich for me, and I could only finish about 3/4 of it before I had to stop.

The day was also cut short due to another thunderstorm. I headed back to the hotel around 7:30 PM. It wasn't bad, but the rain is friggin' annoying for walking around. I didn't stoop to buying a rain poncho like some of those other tourists. Anyway, the rain let up a bit when I got to the hotel, and I decided to go to the pool. So I get out to the pool and it starts raining again, but there was no thunder or lightning. I was in there for about 30 minutes, when a bunch of kids who were in there were making a hell of a racket, so I got out and headed back to the hotel. After drying off, I went to the Scat Cat club in the lobby, and had a couple of drinks - two, to be precise, and it cost me $20 with tip! When the bartender said, "$10.50" I asked, "$10.50!?!?!" Oh well, it was pretty good and I got a fake ice cube that changes colour but it was definitely not worth what they're charging.

IMG_7936.JPG

After my drinks, I headed down to the boat launch to get a boat to Downtown Disney. I wandered around there for an hour or so and bought a couple of peanut-butter cups from Goofy's Candy Shop, and headed back to the hotel at around 11:10 PM. I love the boat ride from Downtown Disney and could do it again and again!

Looking forward to taking a day off tomorrow!

Day 5 - October 10, 2008

Well, I didn't take a day off as I had originally planned. I ended up going to Animal Kingdom for part of the day. It was lucky that it didn't rain until closing time at 6:00. Then I decided I wanted to go over to the Magic Kingdom to see Wishes at 9:00, but when I got there, I found out it was open only until 7:00 PM, and the Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party was taking place again. I figured that if it was Friday night, the park should be open late for everyone but who am I to set any rules? There's always a ton of other things I can do.

So, I came back to the hotel, watched a bit of TV and put the pictures and audio I took today on the laptop. I recorded the trip to Conservation Station but I need to edit it because some chick was trying to find the other half of her party and she and the train station attendant were yelling back and forth about the names she'd like them to announce over the loudspeaker, and I got the whole conversation on audio which really kind of cheesed me off, but it's nothing I can't fix.

You know, just watching people really makes me think how some of them actually get along in their daily lives. I mean, Disney World is supposed to be one of the "Happiest Place on Earth", but you see a lot of kids who are being yelled at by their parents and the parents are fighting, and the kids are crying and bawling at times. That makes it hard to enjoy the parks sometimes because this is a place for everyone to enjoy, it's not a place to come to feel bad, or sad. I was standing on the monorail platform at the TTC last night and saw a wife strike her husband for some reason, and the husband never fought back, and had to explain to his kids that they shouldn't go near their mom when she was "pissed off". What kind of vacation is that? But as someone who doesn't have kids, I can assure you that if I did, I would have well behaved kids who would know the limits and who would be well behaved in public and if they didn't understand why they couldn't have something, then I would give them a good talking to but would never yell at or hit them, like I've seen so much of here. That is what my mom did. We were always taught to be well behaved in public and we couldn't have a lot of things we wanted, but we never threw tantrums or jumped up and down screaming at the top of our lungs. If we did, we'd get a smack upside the head, or worse, the strap (but never in public). We knew the difference between right and wrong at a very young age.

The weather in the past 5 days has been pretty humid, but nice during the day. Today was one day where the humidity was so high that it made it kind of unbearable to be out in it for any length of time, so I found myself dodging air conditioned buildings to keep cool. I'd be in there, get nice and cool (and dry) and go back outside into the humidity and be soaking again within a couple of minutes. I don't know how people down here can take this day after day, but I suppose they get used to it after awhile. The rain hasn't been much of a problem. It's a warm rain, not like it is at home where it's cold and damp, so walking in it is bearable. It actually feels good on a hot day. So many people buy those rain ponchos because they might get their hair wet or clothes wet. The rain only lasts for a few minutes at a time, and because it's so hot out, it dries almost immediately.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to take a day off from the parks and move from the French Quarter to Coronado Springs, but I'm thinking about how I'm going to get there. I'll have to pack, then take one of the buses to a park and then transfer to the Coronado Springs bus. I think that'll be the easiest way. In the next couple of days I'm also thinking of renting a car for a few days, and I have to do my laundry after I move. I have 3 days left on my park hopper passes, and 5 days left on my meal plan, so I think I'll be OK. Lord knows there's no shortage of food around here! I feel like I've gained a few pounds, just within the short time I've been here. No wonder some Americans are so big. Buffet meals, such as at Tusker House at Animal Kingdom, are huge down here which means you can go get everything you can eat in one sitting. For some of these people, four, five for six plates full of food are not uncommon. There was one family that got on the Sassagoula Riverboat the other night when I went to Downtown Disney, and all three of them had to be over 300 pounds each! One of them was so big he had a motorized scooter. I don't think he could get up and walk he was so big!

Looking forward to relaxing soon, just sitting around doing nothing - maybe go see a movie at Downtown Disney, or at least see the rest of it and how Disney has ruined the clubs. I'm expecting before I leave I'll be stocking up on some Disney merchandise, like pins and stuff, and roaming from park to park. I'm seriously looking at going back to the World of Disney to find that watch I like. I might get it, I just can't decide. The one I have is fine. It's gotten me a lot of compliments over the years. It's a bit of a conversation piece!

Check out time tomorrow is 11:00. I should be ready to go around 10:30. Port Orleans French Quarter is a nice hotel, but I don't think I'll stay here again unless I'm with someone, perhaps Glenn, but then we can choose from any Disney hotel to stay at, not just the French Quarter. Riverside is a bit nicer, but they both have their own charm. The rooms are clean, they're cleaned every day, and they're fairly quiet, except you can hear the next door neighbours flushing the toilets and walking up and down the outside hallways. There are also a lot of kids here, too many for my liking. Maybe the Coronado Springs will be a little less crowded, given the size of the grounds. I'm kind of looking forward to staying there again. I've been there before, but it's been awhile.

Day 6 - Oct 11, 2008

Checked out of Port Orleans French Quarter this morning at 11:00 AM and asked the front desk CM about the best way of getting over to the Coronado Springs from the FQ, and he said to either take the TTC bus over to the TTC, or take a taxi, and I said that because I was already at the TTC, I could not get a bus back to the FQ from there, so it’s not going to work if I go there to try to get a bus from there to the Coronado Springs. He was totally oblivious to this fact. In fact, the TTC only has shuttlebuses to and from participating neighbour hotels off property. He said he didn’t know that until I told him. I was the one who told him that it might be easier for me to take a Disney bus from the FQ, and transfer at either the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, whichever came first. He agreed, and I don’t mind the ride and transferring over to another bus. So I stood in line at the bus stop for about 10 minutes and a Disney bus transit supervisor drove by and asked us how long we’d been waiting for a MK bus. He stopped in front of several people to ask. Then when the people behind me said they’d been waiting half an hour, he immediately got on his walkie-talkie and assured us that “one will be here immediately”. It really had no impact on me, as I was going to take the first bus that was going to either of these parks, and I hadn’t waited that long. So a bus pulls up going to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and I take that one. When I get there, I found myself waiting and waiting and waiting… about 30 minutes in total for the bus to Coronado Springs.

The bus trip was nothing special, but at least it was relatively quiet around the noonhour and it was air conditioned. I checked in but they don’t have a room for me yet so I’m sitting here in the Pepper Market writing this until my check-in time of 3:00. I have to call a number to find out what my hotel room number is but at least I know I’ll be staying in the Cabanas block. They were going to put me in the 6100 block, which would put me at the very far end of the property, but the CM quickly corrected herself and put me in the 8100 block. You’d think with a hotel with almost 2,000 rooms would have at least one room available before 3:00!

I also rented a car from Alamo today, but need to go pick it up. The shuttlebus to the Car Care Centre arrives at 4:20 this afternoon in front of the Coronado Springs so I better make sure I am there. Then I can get the car, come back here and do some laundry. It’s $300 to rent the car until the afternoon of the 15th. It’s a bit steep, but if I’m going to TLH, I’m going to need one. It’s a long walk otherwise!!

In the last few minutes I found myself wandering around the Coronado Springs Convention Centre and found a data port that I might be able to get free Internet service with, so I plugged it in and no such luck. It’s trying to connect to the Veracruz network - oddly enough, this part of the hotel is called “Veracruz”. The network is provided by SmartCity and Walt Disney World, but, although I can connect, both with a network cable and wireless, it’s $4.95/hr or $9.95 for 24 hours. I suppose that’s not too bad. I’ll look into that tonight. I also found a great place to record some of the ambient music I’m hearing - right at the very end of the Veracruz hallway! There’s nobody down here, and I suppose that if someone came down to give me heck for trying to plug my computer in a data port, that it would take them at least 3 minutes to walk the entire distance of the one hallway. And within the 3 minutes I was “connected”, I don’t think I was breaking any rules, and I never saw a soul. I didn’t know this hotel was so big! There’s also a bar I want to check out later on tonight after I get the car.

Well, I got the car today and it was almost $500 - I got the whole insurance package including accident and liability. When I got back to the hotel, I went to see RIX, the nightclub here at Coronado Springs. It’s nice - they play dance club music and have lights shining all over the dance floor which nobody was dancing to. The drinks start at about $10 and go to about $15 depending on what you order. I can’t justify paying that much for a drink, when I can make my own mojitos for next to nothing!

Someone must have had Internet service in the room before me because it didn’t ask me for payment, yet here I am typing away and have full, free run of the Internet. I suppose I’ll wait until I get my bill before I know if I’ve been charged. If not, that’s OK because it’ll be like having “free” internet access!

Off to Tallahassee tomorrow. More on Monday.

Day 7 - October 12, 2008

Went to Tallahassee this morning to see Ken and Michelle. I didn't take any photos or record any audio.

When I arrived there, we chatted a bit and then went to Mrs. Livingston's for dinner. Ken and I had the prime rib au jus - he had the 12 ounce and I had the 10 ounce. Their jus is out of this world. It's like you can't keep the flavour in your mouth long enough because it's so good.

We passed by a gas station on the way to the restaurant and noticed that gas was relatively inexpensive - $2.97/gallon whereas everything else was about $3.15. So we got through at the restaurant and came back to the house for another cup of tea and then I headed out, and back to the Orlando area.

The roads for some reason were not as busy as they were last time, and also I remember the drive being a lot longer last time than it was this time. I left here about 8:30 in the morning and drove into Ken & Michelle's driveway at about noon. When I left Tallahassee, it was about 7:30 PM and I got into the hotel right about midnight. I wasn't confused by the roads signs this time either - not like last time where I passed the Orlando exit and was almost in Tampa before I realized how far south I'd come!

After all the rain I had in the first week, it was a pleasure in the second week to go anywhere without rain pouring down on me, and I had a really nice time driving to Tallahassee from Orlando and back. There was a spotty shower on the way back, but it didn't bother me and it was over just about as fast as it came about. I like the idea of having no trucks in the far left lane. On the 3-lane highway from the I-75 exit from I-10, trucks are only allowed to use the far two right lanes. So most of the way back I did about 78 mph in a 70 mph zone. I think that's why I got back to the hotel so quickly.

Day 8 - Oct 13, 2008

Spent the day at Disney's Hollywood Studios today. Throughout much of the day, it rained, but that didn't stop me from walking around. I didn't mind walking in the rain, but today was one of the BUSIEST days at any Disney park I've ever been to! It's probably busy because it was Columbus Day in the United States and people get a day off work, so what do they do? Everyone and their cousin comes to Disney World and converges on the Studios!

I got to spend a lot of time just walking around and just soaking everything in. I love doing that. I like to grab a bite and stand out on the corner and just watch everyone as they walk by to see for myself what they might be like. People-watching is fun! But there are some times when some parents treat their kids like crap and I don't like seeing that. I feel like I want to say something, but it's not my place to say it to the parents. Then again, should the situation arise where the kid is being physically harmed, then I feel like I can step in and say something, because that's considered abuse. Or if I didn't feel like I wanted to intervene and it's none of my business really I can just let a Cast Member know. I'm sure they're prone to dealing with situations similar to this often, given the amount of people at the parks.

On a positive note, I FINALLY got in to see Toy Story Mania 4-D! It's VERY cool!!! You sit in this 2-sided vehicle with 2 seats and you put on your 3-D glasses and you're literally "spun" from section to section where your vehicle stops in front of a huge 3-D screen and you pull a string on a firing device and let it go repeatedly and it "shoots" balls at all of the intended targets to build up points. The more targets you hit, the more points you get. But it's all done in a carnival-style motif. You walk into the ride passing by huge replicas of board games like Scrabble, and past a lot of inter-twined monkeys from the old Barrel-full-of-Monkeys that a lot of us had when we were kids, and under red and white 'tents' until you get to the loading area, which looks a lot like Andy's bedroom from Toy Story. Like I said, it's very, very cool! But the problem with this attraction is that it's ALWAYS 60+ minutes in the Standby line to get on it. Or, you can get a fastpass, but you need to get it way before 1:00 PM so that you can get in by park closing time.

Tonight was Extra Magic Hours from 9:00 PM until midnight, for which I stayed. Before the park closed, I went on Toy Story Mania again. The first time I was got on it, I got a total of about 88,000 points, and the second and last time I was on it I got 115,000 points. The highest points of the day get posted at the end of the ride. Someone got way over 300,000 points but I haven't a clue how they get there. It's not easy to hit some of the targets!

Earlier today I saw "Lights, Motors, Action!" It's a lot of hoopla really but some of the stunts were pretty good, like the "backward" driver. We find out later that the car that is driving backwards is actually made with the driver facing backward with a steering wheel facing in the other direction. I got one good shot of an "explosion" when the car goes through fire. Check it out! Neraring the end of the show, it started raining (no thunder or lightning this time around) but the rain wasn't even forecast for the day, yet it ended up raining most of the afternoon.

For dinner, I went to the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre restaurant for dinner. Having never been there before, I found it VERY cool too! You walk in and make your reservation and depending on how busy it is you can likely get a seat within a few minutes. My seat became available after about 15 minutes. Someone comes out and says, "Now parking <your name>" so when I heard my name, I got up and the CM introduced herself and ushers you into the restaurant, which looks like a lot of multi-seat 57 Chevrolet cars sitting in the style of a drive-in movie theatre from the old days, facing a huge screen showing clips from old scary movies like "The Blob" and where you can see the occasional Tex Avery cartoon, like "The Cat Who Hated People" - in keeping with the Science Fiction genre, it's a story about a cat who hates people so much, he goes to the moon and it's so noisy there he decides to come back to Earth and realizes how much he misses the Earth. I had a milkshake and the bow-tie pasta with chicken rather than shrimp. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't terrific either. For dessert I had the chocolate cake with the peanut-butter centre, topped with caramel and roasted carmelized walnuts. $40, not on the dining plan including tip (I used my dining plan meal for the day at breakfast earlier today).

Midnight rolled around eventually and I made my way back to the hotel and watched a couple of episodes of Golden Girls on Lifetime, then went to bed.

Day 9 - October 14, 2008

Spent the day at the Magic Kingdom today to do some of the stuff I missed, but the crowds were unbelievable and finish up most of my shopping. I got a t-shirt, and a gift for Glenn and another for Jodie. I'm sure they'll like what I got them. I also added to my pin collection. I think I have too many pins for 1 lanyard, because I've been buying a lot of pins but don't know if the number of pins I have will all fit on one lanyard. So I might have to get another one.

I'm getting SO tired of listening to screaming kids that my ears are sore! I got onto the tram that takes you to the parking lot tonight and turned to the woman sitting next to me and said, "Wow, relative silence!" and she agreed! Except for the noise of the tram engine at the front, it was relatively quiet, because most of the kids were either sleeping in their parents' laps, or were pretty close to falling asleep.

I was standing in line at one of the vending stations in Fantasyland out in front of the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride and the CM attending the line (because they were closing) said to me, "They're closed now." and I said, "Oh, ok, thanks," and he asked me what I was going to order. I told him that all I wanted was a Coke, so he let me in line and we got talking about where we were both from - he was from El Salvador and I told him I was from Canada and as I got to the front of the line he asked me what I wanted again and I said "Just a Coke" and he said to the CM at the counter, "A large Coke please" and as I pulled out my money to pay he looked at me and said, "Don't worry about that," and handed me my free large Coke! This is in addition to me getting a free Mickey bar at Epcot last week! This must be the result of some of the "Year of a Million Dreams" things. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time twice now. However, a night's stay in Cinderella's Castle would be nice, but we can't have everything we want, can we?

Tonight on the way out of the Magic Kingdom, I got in the car and decided I should fill it up, since I'm taking it back tomorrow. I stopped at the Car Care Centre and filled up for $3.08/gal. Quite a change from the $2.97 in Tallahassee the night before last. I might return the car first thing in the morning because I want to go to Epcot later in the day, and spend the remainder of my time touring World Showcase and then watching Illuminations: Reflections of Earth at 9:00. I don't have to return it until 5:00 PM but maybe if I return it early in the day they won't "lose" the car like last time I rented one on a previous trip. I only covered part of World Showcase last week and want to finish it up before I leave on Thursday.

I'm going to need some sleep when I get home! Walt Disney World is not a place to go if you want to relax!

Day 10 - October 15, 2008

Spent the day at Epcot seeing the rest of World Showcase. Took lots of pictures, some of stuff I already have, and then some new stuff. Also finished up on my shopping but forgot to pick up another lanyard. I found some more pins that I bought in my suitcase that I forgot I had, so I don't have enough room on one lanyard for all the pins. When I check out tomorrow, I can see if they have one in the gift shop.

I got my notice on the door about the Magical Express service back to the airport. I catch the bus at 3:15 out in front of the hotel. On my way back from Epcot I stopped in at Reception to ask if I could get the checkout time in my room extended and all they could give me was another hour, so I can check out at noon instead of 11:00.

Tried Tutto Italia tonight for my farewell dinner, the former spot of Alfredos Restaurant. I had a Rossini with my lasagna dinner. It's like a Bellini, only it's a sparkling strawberry flavour. $10 was added to my bill, but I still walked out of there with paying less than $50 for dinner. I suppose if you like it and you think it was worth it, then it was OK.

Well, it's time to go home. I don't want to leave, yet I want to get back home so I can enjoy the rest of my vacation.

Day 11 - October 16, 2008

Started the day off sleeping in a little, then packing my suitcase. I'm amazed I got all that stuff in there! I hope they don't end up charging me a bit more at the airport for extra heavy luggage, but I should be OK. The bulkiest things are my tripod and the new Muppet characters I stuffed in there. I picked up some of the other characters on my last trip here in 2006 so now I have a complete set.

I packed up, watched a little TV and then headed for El Centro, the resort checkin and lobby area. The notice I received on my door said I have to wait until 3:15 for my Magical Express bus ride out of here, so I have about 2 more hours to wait, and that I could just got on the express airline checkin counter out by the Convention Centre entrance. When I arrived there, I was asked for ID and when I was asked where I was going to, I said "Vancouver, Canada", and was told that the express airline checkin would not do me as my flight was a connecting International flight, and that I had to check in at the airport itself. I suppose that's not too hard to do, but was a little miffed because I thought now I have to babysit these bags until then. I don't HAVE to, but I don't want to dole out any more money for luggage services to look after my bags, you know, tip-wise. The service is free, but I'd rather just keep my bags with me. If I had a family and kids with me, I might take advantage of that, but seeing as it's just myself, it's OK to keep my bags with me.

Went to the Pepper Market for "breakfast" (and I say that because at noon they've already stopped serving breakfast for an hour but it was breakfast to me). I was asked to fill out a comment card to let them know how they're doinng so I wrote:

"I think this whole business of a ticketing/dining/billing routine is a little confusing. But, I have to commend your Cast Members for their hard work and diligence and maintaining professionality during stressful times."

Then I signed my card and put my e-mail address on it just in case someone wanted to respond. Gee, aren't I nice? :-)

I found a neat little meeting room to type all of this in at the end of the Convention Centre hallway. There's no internet service, but at least I can while away the hours and it's so quiet down here you could hear a pin drop. The seats they have out in the hallway are just not comfortable enough to be able to sit on and use a laptop. Plus there's nobody down here except service people. When someone decides to kick me out of this room, then I'll go, but so far it's been quiet. While I write this, I'm listening to some of the attraction sounds I recorded.

So what have I learned from this experience? Well, everybody's different. I learned that this is a "family" destination. Everybody brings their families! There are too many people in the world, and all of those people come to Disney World. And what's worse, is they pull all of their school-aged children out of school to come on vacation for a week - just a short month after they started the new school year! You look at these people and think to yourself, "Shouldn't these kids be in school?"

Kids are sometimes noisy, whiny and irritable, and it kind of makes me glad I don't have kids. As I was saying in a previous post, I was never allowed to act the way I see some of these kids act in the parks. If I did, I'd get my *** kicked from my mother and told that this is the kind of place where you be on your best behaviour. Of course, we'd have fun, but we could never throw tantrums and scream and yell at the top of our lungs. Making a scene was out of the question.

But, having someone to come here with would be nice. I'd love to have a friend come with me sometime, especially if they've never been here. If you stay on the property, you pay a premium. That's the price you pay if you want the total Disney experience. You can save some money if you stay off-site at another hotel, but why not immerse yourself in the Disney magic and have a truly magical vacation if you're going to travel this far from Vancouver? I've done the cheap hotel route before, and although you save a bit of money, you miss out on a lot of perks, like sending your purchases back to your room without having to carry them with you through the parks and being able to take advantage of the dining plan and so on.

All in all, I had a pretty memorable vacation and I'm looking forward to doing it again in a few years' time.
