Wow just heard today on MiceChat that Space Mountain WDW will be closed for a MAJOR refurb starting January 2009 for 14 MONTHS!!! OUCH! I'm glad DLR got theirs done a few years ago.

Hm.

We have a "girls only" trip planned in January. My sister was saying how she hated that ride...(she lost a ring on it) and was not going on again. I told her she had to. Now it looks like she may get her way...... :rotfl:

Thanks for the heads up!

oh no! Well, knew it was coming......I LOVE the DL version...but must admit, there's a soft spot in my hear for the old rickety one....

I think this is good news and hope it does happen. It's good to know in case I want to ride the old rattle trap one last time. Normally we skip it, the WDW version is just not that great. I hope the rehab changes that!

Ahh -I'll be sad, but I understand and will be excited the following summer when we get to ride it again with new excitement.

I'm glad that they are finally upgrading Space Mountain. The Paris version spoiled me for this ride.

Boohoo!! I didn't get to go on it last time and now I won't be able to go on it my next two to three times! :(

I'll just have to give the standard, company line here -- until something is officially announced by Disney itself, I wouldn't plan or un-plan any trips because of this. The rumors have been going on for a while now of a rehab anywhere from 6 months for a minor touch-up, to 14+ months for a major Disneyland style re-do, and everything in between. Until an official announcement is made, I'm taking this as just another rumor.

That's one of the major reasons we're not going to WDW next summer (well, that and Ireland) - but can't wait til 2010 when we DO go!!! 23 months and counting....

Just a reminder that no Space Mountain refurb has been officially announced by Disney, so this is still just a RUMOR at this point. As such, I've moved this thread to the Rumors and News board. :)

I could have sworn I read an announcement by Disney the beginning of August that SM was closing in January for a major rehab. I guess I was wrong...

It's not a "Rumor" that it will happen..it WILL happen starting in January..."What" will change specifically, is still considered a "Rumor"..but expect it to be down at least 1/2 of the 2009 season. :sad1:

Hi everyone!
Could it be possible that this rehab is the instillation of the Monster's Inc. ride? It's big enough. It's dark enough. Instead of two coasters, how about one big, long ride.
Just a thought.

Hey as long as it stays a roller coster type ride i don't care what the do to it. i just hope it's after the 9th of january

Ok going in September has proven to be the haven for rehabs. I get it though, its a slower time of year but it still affects people traveling. I've had to do without RNRC & Spaceship Earth last year & this time around it will be Primeval & LMA. I will be riding SM a lot on this trip, due to the 2 MNSSHP's i'm attending & i'll have my fix but i'm more worried about my best friends Samantha & Matt who have never been & September 2009 will be our first trip down. So i'm keeping my fingers crossed that SM is re-opened by middle of September & if not, they'll just have to come back to enjoy it with me another year :)

I looked on the Walt Disney World website and it's not listed as a closing for refurb on there. Obviously, I know it can change at any time, but as of right now, it's not official from Disney. I was surprised to see that Hall of Presidents will be closed from November 1 to March 31 for "refurb." That's a long time.

My question regarding this situation is if they close Space Mountain for a major overhaul, will the close down the PeopleMover as well? I was thinking they might leave it open and create a tunnel so you can't see what's going on. I would be devastated if they closed TTA for that long!

Could you post a link to the announcement?
