I know its heaps early but im excited to start thinking and planning:banana:

We have been to DL twice... and this time would like go to WDW. But the accommodation options are doing my head in.:confused3

So cane you please let me know where you have stayed onsite. The pros and cons about it and any other recomendations....

Thanks heaps:)

Sarah

How exciting Sarah :cool1: A trip to plan. I feel that the planning is half the fun of a trip.

We have stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge (Jambo House). The first time we had a room with a queen bed and bunk beds (a savannah view room), the second time we stayed we had a room with two queens. I actually liked the bunk bed layout better, but I think it's extra for them, but we didn't pay extra. We absolutely LOVED this resort. The first time we stayed, we were there for 21 nights, the second time 8 nights, so we have spent a good amount of time there. AKL is one of the cheapest deluxe resorts at WDW and is worth every penny (although it is great getting 40% off, which we got last trip)

My son is an animal lover, so he absolutely loved checking out the animal on the savannah. We have always requested a room on the 2nd floor. The 2nd floor has viewing areas along the way to the room, with rocking chairs and viewing machines, my DS would always run ahead and go out to the viewing area on our way to and from our rooms.

The resort has three of our favourite restaurants at WDW. Boma has the best breakfast onsite, it's a buffet, has such good food, feels healthier than many of the other breakfasts. Mara is a great CS restaurant, their chicken caeser salad is one of the best I've ever eaten! the chicken is so yummy. Then Jiko, mmmmmm, the food is so good here, its a signature restaurant and we have never had a bad meal there and it has great service too.

The lobby is absolutely amazing and the resort has such an incredible feel. It is darker in appearance but that is just the themeing in my view.

The bus system, which can have bad reviews on occasion has always been great for us, except for one very long wait at MK for a bus back to the resort. The resort is very close to AK park and doesn't share buses with other resorts.

They have a great laundry too, which is quite big and also a kids club, that we didn't use, but it gets good reviews and it looked good. A nice pool, but after staying at Yacht/Beach Club resorts, the pool doesn't seem as great anymore, but it's still nice.

Con's of AKL.... It can be a long walk back to your room, one of our rooms was the 2nd last room at the end and it was a really really long walk, but we didn't mind as we had an awesome view of the savannah. Other than that, there isn't anything that I can complain about.

We have also stayed at Beach Club Resort.
Beach Club was ok. It was nice. I would stay again, but it's not the top of my list. We had a room almost at the end of the hall, overlooking a wooded area beside EPCOT. We had a view of illuminations every night and a few rooms after us, there was a stairwell that came out about 1 minute from the EPCOT gates, SO close and SO handy to EPCOT. No good if you had a young child, but with your DD being 5, if she has a stroller, you could fold that up to go up and down the stairs.

The pool is amazing! Probably the best at WDW and with a 5 year old, she would be in heaven in that pool. It is huge, acres in size. It has an awesome waterslide, a lazy river where you can hire tubes to float around in, it has their whirlpool thing that my DS lived in, that you go round and round in a circle, there is also a beach.

There is Cape May's Restaurant, which is a character buffet breakfast. It's one of our favourite character meal and a really fun breakfast with good food. The clam bake at dinner is good too. There is beaches n cream restaurant. This feels like a CS but is a TS restaurant. It has burgers, hotdogs and ice cream and shakes. I have to say that the food is not fabulous, but a visit to this place is a must. It feels like an old icecream parlour/diner and the icecreams and milkshakes are SO good! The burgers are ok, and not bad, but not great. You can get take away icecreams and milkshakes. Next door at the Yacht Club has two restaurants and these are both easily accessed from the Beach Club and are great restaurants (will talk about those later).

There is a kids club at BC, but there isn't a CS restaurant. There are light meals available at the marketplace (the store/shop) and there is a CS style outside by the pool, but it isn't open in the evenings. It is so handy to EPCOT and the Boardwalk, that it really isn't a big deal not having a CS in the resort in my opinion.

There is once con about the bus system. As the buses are shared with Yacht Club, Boardwalk and sometimes Swan & Dolphin resorts, often by the time the buses get to the BC they are full and you have to wait for another or there is standing room only. Access to EPCOT is not by bus, it is only by boat or walking, there is also access to Hollywood Studios by boat, which it's almost quicker to walk as the boat stops along the way. That was the only thing that bothered us about staying there, was the crowded buses, because they stop at multiple resorts, they are regularly packed or fill up quickly and you have to wait.

This is a fantastic area to stay in. The easy access to EPCOT makes it fantastic for dining at EPCOT, the pool is amazing and it is such a bright resort with a wonderful feel.

My mother stayed at Club Level too in a suite and it was amazing! The club was good, had really nice snacks, really good service and her room was huge.

We have stayed at Yacht Club Resort a couple of times now. I actually prefer this resort to the Beach Club. Now we did love the BC, but we just found the YC to be a lot quieter and it's nice to escape to that after the busy hectic parks, just to have somewhere that didn't feel all so busy. The rooms are very similar to the Beach Club, the size and layout is the same, just the furnishings are in different themes. We loved hopping on the buses here as if they didn't stop at Swan and Dolphin, they were empty, we were the first stop on the journey, so then going to BC and Boardwalk resorts, we were already in our seats and no waiting or missing buses due to them being full.

The restaurants here are Yachtmans Steakhouse which is a signature restaurant. They food here is just fantastic and I can recommend it. Then there is Captains Grill restaurant. This is one of the hidden gems at WDW and I can highly recommend it if you are staying at BC or wanting somewhere before heading to EPCOT. It is a buffet, but as there are not any characters, it's cheaper than most other buffets at WDW. The other fabulous thing is, that they are also a la carte, so not everybody has to have the buffet. If somebody in your group just wanted coffee or if they just wanted fruit, they can order off the menu and the other can have buffet.

YC shares it's pool with BC.

Along with AKL, YC is our preferred resort, we love it. Being so close to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios and the Boardwalk, the amazing pool, fantastic restaurants, it's a short walk to the Fantasia Gardens mini golf. It's in a great location, not far by bus to the waterparks, DTD.

My mother has stayed at Saratoga Springs and we spent a bit of time there with her. It was OK but it's a really big resort and can be a real hike to the main restaurants and reception and pool area. There are smaller quiet pools too, but for a 5yr old, the main pool is more fun. It's not somewhere high on my list to stay, but if I got a great price, then I certainly would stay there, it wasn't bad, the room was clean, had a kitchen but just didn't have the same feel as the smaller resorts.

I have pictures of the rooms and resort at AKL, BC and YC in my trip report below. Happy to help with any questions in the future when you narrow down your resorts and if you are thinking about one of them.

Hi Sarah. Congratulations on starting the planning process.

Staying on vs off site will come down to what you personally think is value for money or not. And for this, everyone will have an opinion.

For WDW, I've stayed off-site in 2005 and since then I've stayed on site for both trips in 2010. I did a split stay at POR and BCV in May; and then stayed at CSR in October. Pictures of the resorts can be found in the links below.

Personally, I prefer to stay on-site in WDW. The property is huge and that's the thing that first timers to the World just don't get. If you've visited DLR before, that will be the thing that might be hardest to come to terms with at the World.

If you are a Disney fan, staying onsite gives you that full immersion in the Disney experience. If you think that you might OD from too much Disney, then you might want to consider staying off-site.
The on-site perks are great...resort to park transportation, room dropoff for shopping, DME to your resort without having to hire a car at MCO, EMH.

The cons is that food is expensive at the World compared to being off-site and there really isn't any escape from Disney. Also you can be paying a premium for real estate space compared to being off site (we got a 3 bedroom 3 bath place off site for less than the discounted price at a moderate resort).

Good luck with deciding whether you'll stay onsite or offsite. When I first went in 2005, I couldn't work out why people stayed onsite nor could justify the price difference for onsite cf off-site.

I've stayed at 2 of the moderate resorts and 1 of the deluxe resorts. I really enjoyed our stay at POR as much as BCV (deluxe). I haven't checked out any of the values; but from all accounts, POP is probably the value resort of choice. The other thing to consider is that given you're planning on going in 2014, the new Art of Animation resort will be opened then.

Given the choice, I would choose to stay at one of the Epcot resorts simply for the location.

I know that there are a few Aussies that love staying along one of the monorail resorts so I'll let them tell you all about it.

Like aussietravellers said....if you have any questions, just post it. I'm sure you'll get half a dozen responses at the very least. :thumbsup2

Looking forward to sharing your plans over the next two years.

You're Welcome :goodvibes
The time will go so quickly, your trip will be here before you know it, even though it does seem a long way away.

CS stands for Counter Service (or Quick Service) which are order from the counter and take your food to the table and food court style

TS stands for Table Service which are buffets and restaurants where you are served at the table (like Goofys Kitchen, Blue Bayou, The Plaza at Disneyland).

I'm with PIO - the place is so big and I get frustrated with all the travel time to get anywhere. (i live in Canberra. anything more than 10 mins without free parking at the door bugs me!)

so TS = Table Service, which comes as ordinary table service and Signature Dining; and CS = Counter Service - as in cafeterias.

I have always split my stays - to stay in the MK area and the Epcot/DHS area and get places easily. I have stayed in:
  • WL - most wonderful theming, lovely boat ride to MK, cheaper price
  • Polynesian - Huge rooms, lovely gardens, monorail, good restaurant
  • Contemporary - wonderful theme park view - lay in bed looking at castle, easiest access to monorail, very adult in rooms, but open the door and very noisy, not as friendly
  • Beach Club: smallest room I've ever had, a bit worn, great access to Epcot, great pool, noisy with kids running the corridors
  • Boardwalk Inn: very adult and plush, lovely gardens, easy walk to epcot and DHS, crappiest bus service, decent price
  • OKW: HUGE room with spa, great for family with kitchen, laundry, 2 TVs and space, free parking at the room door, dedicated bus service, no mickey theming, quiet - no corridors with running kids, sprawling and my room was as far away as it could be, decent price

all the resorts are different - so hard to choose!

We went in Oct 11 and did a split stay. We had 9 nights at Pop Century and then 3 nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge - Kidani Village.

We enjoyed both resorts. The kids loved POP, the buses were good (we only ever waited about 5 minutes or less). It is huge and we were in a preferred room so not too far from the lobby etc. The standard rooms can be a bit of a hike. The kids loved the theming and the family atmosphere. The room was quite small but we were fine (2 adults and 2 kids - 6 & 8 years). The beds were only double sized. We did get a bit sick of the food court food, but had organised some dinner reservations prior to our trip and started to buy dinner at the theme parks. To be honest, we didn't spend a lot of time at the resort as we were at the parks most of the time.

Our three nights at Kidani were really nice. We had a 1 bedroom villa with a savanna view. We had so much room to spread out! There was definitely a different atmosphere - much quieter, less kids running around etc. I enjoyed both resorts. If we were to go back again, I would probably do another split stay, but try some other resorts. Animal Kingdom Lodge seemed quite a distance from Magic Kingdom. We didn't rent a car and used only the Disney buses. We found the location of POP was probably better (when comparing the two) as it wasn't far to the parks on the bus and wasn't too far from the water parks or Downtown Disney.

Enjoy the planning - I remember being quite overwhelmed at times but it is a lot of fun organising and researching.

Well how exciting that you are planning a trip to WDW. It's my favourite now, I doubt whether DL would hold the same interest after visiting WDW. It is huge and beyond awesome.

I have only been once but am in the planning stages for our second trip for Christmastime this year.

in Sept 2010 we did a split stay (which I would recommend), first 5 nights at WL which was pure heaven on a stick. It was themed so beautifully, the rooms were great, buses were good, the foyer is worth staying there alone. Loved it.

Then we spent the next 6 nights at POP and we like that just as much. Knowing that it was a value resort and how much cheaper, we were astonished at how nice it was for the money. Even though the resort is huge, it isn't far to get to anything. The bus system was excellent, I think it was better than WL for speed. I agree after a while the food court wore a bit thin but we mostly ate in the parks at restaurants etc so it did the job when we needed it too.

Both WL and POP had good laundries.

I thought both rooms were as spacious as each other. Loved WL's foyer, loved POP's pool.

For our upcoming trip we are staying the whole time at POP, only because we are taking an extra person this time and will need 2 rooms. Otherwise we would have again done a split stay with POP being for half the time and either AKL or BW at Epcot for the remainder of the time. It concerns me about Sugargliders review of the buses at Boardwalk, that would turn me off that resort. The buses can make or break your trip so you really should make sure you are choosing somewhere with a good reputation for buses.

My advice would be to spend alot of time on the Resort Forum of the Dis before you make any firm decisions.

You know I've read many reports that the busses at Pop at great - short waits etc.
But the bus that goes to BWI is on a shared route with Swan/Dolphin, Yacht and Beach clubs. When going to a park it picks up at BWI first - so you sit on the bus whilst it makes 3 more stops before heading off. On return, it goes to BWI last - so again with the 3 other resorts first. Adds 20 -30 mins to every trip. Drove me nuts. So I started going over to Swan/Dolphin or Beach (and getting off) to save time. From BWI it is very easy to walk to Epcot, DHS and the other hotels. Thus I like splitting my stays to reduce my travelling time.

Sugarglider - that bus situation would drive me mental. I genuinely don't think I would stay there now, even though the resort looks gorgeous and the location is excellent. The buses would be a problem for my DH mainly.

Ms. Shuttergirl - I wonder if it is the main reason why BWI is slightly cheaper and always has availability. Still - agree - it is a very beautiful resort! I felt very posh!

You may have a very good point there about the pricing. Why wouldn't they just give it it's own bus and then all problems would be solved:lmao:. Disney clearly need someone as smart as me on their payroll :rotfl2:.

We have always been on site people until we stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek. The WBC is actually on Disney property and they have their own shuttle to the parks although I can not comment on it as we always rent a car. The resort has two ($100) or three bedroom suites ($150-$200) with most of the resort being newly constructed with the older buildings only being a few years old. The two bedroom suites have a full kitchen, laundry machines, two bathrooms, a living and dining room. It is really fabulous!!

After two trips there we will likely stay there again. The amount we save staying there allows us to stay longer and enjoy more things. Also with two kids it is so nice to have the extra bathroom/bedroom.

If you still want to stay onsite you really can't go wrong with any of the resorts. It all boils down to money and what you think you can't live without.

The only issue we ever had with Disney accomodation was the all stars. If there are any organized events the bigger groups stay at the all stars/pop resorts and they can be loud and sometimes a mob mentality takes over.

Good luck with your planning!

Hi

We stayed at Grand floridian for 9 Nights in Sept 11. There were 5 of us dd,dm and 3 ds (13,10,5).

It was Beautiful , closest to mk, accessible by Boat or monorail. You could See the fireworks at Night and they piped the Music through the tv's . 2 huge Pools , One with a waterslide. its Set in a 1930's style and the buildings, Gardens and cast members all Look the Part. Probably One of the grandest i have eben too.

The Foyer is a Site to behold and my words Wont do it Justice . See Main Board for Hotel pics.

We were in Club Building so had breakfast,Drinks, Snacks all Day....Kids Lobes the warm Cookies. Mum and dad enjoyed a Glass of Beer or Wine too. All Part of Club amenities.

There are Great Food choices too. 1900 parkfare for a Taste of Prince and princesses. Narccoossees for Great seafood and a Front Row Seat of the mk fireworks and Electric Water Show on the Lake each night.

Didnt do Victoria and Alberts but See Other Reviews for possibly the Best dining in all wdw.

Other Parks Accessable by monorail or Bus. Never experienced any Major Problems. Having Done DL the two previous Years though the scale and Size just blows your mind and Takes Some adjusting expectations of what's reasonable to achieve in your day with kids and humidity.

Nb...we got a 40% discount about 6mths prior to traveling otherwise there was no way we could have gone at normal rates....we booked direct with wdw travel.

I will throw my two cents in about resort choice. We have stayed at Beach Club and at Port Orleans French Quarter. POFQ has my vote hands down. Thecrsortvis very compact and the distance between your room, the pool and the food court is only a matter of a one minute walk. This meant thT we could go between all three places without planning. Ducking back to the room to gbab a hat or sunglasses was no problem. At the beach club, we felt like we had to take everything we needed every time we left the room to save time. I have three boys and I felt like we were forever trekking the corridors of the beach club.
I also liked the food court at POFQ. The selections were decent and we could have a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner without too much hassle. I do love the table restaurants but we only did one TS per day and so the lack of a TS at the resort was not an issue.
We also loved the boat to down town Disney. It was quick and efficient and the ride down the canal is relaxing. I found it very time consuming to get to DTD from the Beach Club
My final point for the resort is the music. There is New Orleans Jazz piped very quiety throughout the resort. I found myself dancing while I walked around and just feeling generally happy.

I was surprised thatvwecpreferredvthe moderate resort as normally I love to wallow in luxury but there it is.

I also wanted to comment on thecdining plan. We have been on the QS plan once and the normal plan once. I am a huge fan of the dining plan. Control freak me spreadsheeted our spendings both time and the plan was well worth it. We did getviscfor free one of the trips but I still kept thecrecords to work it all out. Call me crazy....

Have a fabulous time planning!

Thanks for all the info and tips everyone..:)

We are a long way off booking anything but doing lots and lots of reading and research:yay:
