We were at WDW this past May and DL/DCA this past June just to see the difference for ourselves (me and DH) and to celebrate various special events.
We stayed at the Grand Californian Lodge at DL and would strongly recommend it to anyone thinking of going there/lodging there. The rooms are spacious in comparison with the WDW Wilderness Lodge (which are overpriced and cramped in our estimation) and the GC offers a very nice layout which keeps the enormous lobby very accessible and yet serene overall.
We truly enjoyed DL/DCA very much. It's different than WDW, but you can actually spend more time enjoying the park(s) b/c you don't have to go on a ppl mover or a bus or a boat just to get somewhere... they are directly across from each other once you go through the security checkpoint at the end of Disney Market Place.
If you go to
DisneyLand, it is a MUST to ride the train around the entire park - but especially btwn ToonTown and Main Street USA and see some of the most memorable features of that park. And in DL, the train can save you from walking way farther than you need to to access New Orleans Square - which was one of our favorite features of DL. In DCA, it's an odd mix of stuff, but still enjoyable once you're in the swing of things. The Alladin Show is a MUST - very enjoyable experience.
As for the timing, if you haven't already booked (sorry I didn't see your post until today), February would totally rock. By July, you'll be there when it's insanely crowded! In our trip this past June, the first two days were marvelous, and I kept stocking-up on FastPasses...had like 35 of them for various attractions...DH was laughing at me... UNTIL the third day, when the park was suddenly overtaken by crowds 10 times bigger than what we'd seen the days before because school had let out! The fast passes were a lifesaver then... but b/c a good many nice attractions have no FP option, we were vERY lucky we did a bunch of everthing the first two days.
Seriously, for the Pirates ride (better than at WDW) and Indiana Jones Adventure (not available at WDW), we'd had walk-on and maybe as much as a 15 minute wait the first two days, but that last day, the lines were 70 - 90 minutes long; insanity. So, if you care about level of crowds and lines, go while school is in session.
Staying at the GCL gave us private entry into DCA, which was nice to have. Otherwise, we could go grab coffee at LeBrea (best Java in the land of DisneyLand!!!) which is in the Disney Market Place plaza and near the securiy checkpoint. The monorail hours are strangely curtailed, and it can often be faster to walk, so don't rely on it as any sort of convenient time saver - unless the park is packed solid and it's your best way out.
DisneyLand is Walt's dream realized, alive and thriving. It offers a different feel and variety b/c it's the "original" park - complete with relics of the park's days gone by (visible from the train if you go on past New Orleans Square), and neat displays and video in the theatre just inside the entry, across main street from the fire house.
But anywhere Disney is magic. Enjoy your trip wherever you go!
