WDW or Cruise the best value?

???? Really? what is this? I would love to know more....

If you book through Costco Travel, you always get some kind of deal. They sometimes have special rates on NCL cruises and they almost always have an on board credit option. With DCL, I think it's in the form of a Costco gift card of some amount after you sail. They're just like any TA with the incentives. I've found better incentives for DCL through different agents (like Dreams Unlimited). My non-DCL cruises I've booked through Costco.

It's definitely worth shopping around but when I booked last April Costco was at $235 and the next closest was $200. It probably depends on a ton of factors.

Personal opinion and both are pricey. But to us, our trip to Disney World was truly magical...amazing amazing amazing. We came with a 5 year old (so still in princess phase) and a DS (who loves Star Wars and rides like Splash Mountain).
We went on the Magic cruise, and although it was good, it did not have that magical feel to us. But of course...it was totally geared to kids.
We decided for our next cruise to do Allure (Royal) as Disney cruise just wasn't worth the cost.
Someday we will be paying the cost to Disney World again.
Having said that...splitting up your vacation between the park and a cruise is great way to go too. Never been on a short cruise though so not sure if it would feel too quick (e.g. by the time you get into things its over)

My other consideration is this year doing WDW and then winter 2017 doing a cruise only.
But it seams like so far away to be thinking about 2017 when looking at cruises now.
But then we would get more time at each and able to do each one to the fullest (ie splurging on dining).

I think that is the best option, since you haven't been to the parks that much. As for a 2017 cruise being far away- it's not really. Certain categories book up, and the cruise has to be paid in full further in advance than a WDW resort does.

To add to previous comment, cruises are best to book far in advance. Except for perhaps last minute deals, prices only seem to rise (and if it goes down before final payment, you can get the lower price). And booking early better chance of getting stateroom of your choice and dining. I couldn't imagine having late dining with young kid s.
Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

I'm clearly a big DCL fan (Platinum) and we only started with DCL in 2012. I personally love being in one location and being catered to. Even when the ships are full and it feels crowded it's a different crowded compared to the parks and all the hustle and bustle. Don't get me wrong, we are huge WDW fans too :)

I also book through Costco and that earns me 7-8% on a Costco Cash card after the cruise. I have used them for 11 sailings now and never been disappointment. I save for WDW/DCL vacations by using other cost saving measures and you can see other threads about Raise/Disney gift cards for the explanations. I've saved quite a bit and every little bit helps although there is some work involved.

If you do both WDW and DCL most folks recommend doing the parks first as they tend to be more exhausting, then do DCL for a little more relaxation afterwards. I would agree with this and we've done both. We typically do one vacation at a time but last month we did 3 nights WDW with free dining then a 3 night Dream cruise. This is my DH's ideal trip but of course we'd prefer a longer cruise when we can. Don't let the 3/4 night sailings scare you away as they are great to get an idea if you love cruising (pretty sure you will) and depending on price and time of year they can be best for your plans. I do agree they tend to feel a little more "frantic" but not enough to scare us/me away. The first day is always the most hectic especially with new cruisers getting their feel around the ship but things settle down. We always arrive early to Port and first group to board (Plat perk) so we get a full day we feel on the first day and enjoy it. Our first sailing was a 4 night on the Dream and we LOVED it and no regrets.

Have fun!
Heather

How do you adjust a previously higher cruise price downwards? Thanks for the info.

Other costs to consider for cruising are passports (if you don't have them already) and insurance. We cruise without passports but it's a little risky. I would not cruise without insurance.

Cost wise for me a Disney cruise is more expensive, as I don't like to cruise unless I have a balcony (private outdoor space). And I do excursions at the ports, so even though I'm not paying for theme park tickets I'm paying for that, and those can sometimes be just as pricey as theme park tickets. I'm not one to hang at the beach all day, layout by the pool, etc. Cruising on another mainstream line with balcony (Carnival or NCL) or going to WDW is about a wash cost wise for me. I'd say for vacation which is just a frivolous / fun thing, go with what you are the most fired up to do. // My next Florida trip will be Orlando not a cruise as that's what I'm more in the mood to do. And it will be a pretty short trip just four nights/three days.

There are ways to cut the cost of a WDW or cruise trip too, so probably either could work well with your vacation budget.

A spit actually sounds kind of nice I think. But I personally love the WDW/Orlando mini trip. It's not a great value for park tickets, but it's easy to plan/loads of fun and the perfect amount of park time for me. // I definitely think I'm in the minority on these boards, but I prefer short doses of Orlando -- absolutely love to go there, but prefer a short stay over a longer trip and tend to do one of these annually. It helps that I have plenty of frequent flyer points and usually fly down using those, so it's sort of a bonus trip on top of a different main vacation. // And doing a theme park with a little touring plan is pretty darn stress free and relaxing and stress free vs. my interesting but often stressful job.

Not to knock cruising or anything like that -- I mean the Caribbean is beautiful with it's crystal clear waters. But ports look a lot alike all over to me -- same stores -- similar excursions -- an island excursion option, a snorkeling trip, a scuba diving option, a glass bottom boat or submarine, a helicopter ride over an island, a dolphin swim, zip line, a resort beach day, yada yada. Then there is your private island beach day which if you want something similar in Orlando you can go to Discovery Cove. And the short time in port really just lets you be a surface tourist. // I do like dinner dining on the cruise (it's always a fun event with no planning on your part) and sitting out on the balcony with my family (my second favorite thing about a cruise). // I think, though, I'm just more of land girl.

So which gives you the most joy -- fires you up the most? I'd say a cruise is less planning. I like WDW planning though and have done it so often that I find it fun. And like I said, I'm usually just planning three days -- pretty darn easy.

Thank you all for your feedback. I just made an impulse purchase..a big one.. I booked the 3 night cruise! The price was higher than Im sure I could have got it for. But Expedia had a $100 onboard credit (even for the less than $2000 staterooms!) plus the 10% back…Speaking of, has anyone else been success of getting this back? I sure hope so, those 2 things are what made it in a better price range for me.

Im hoping if we like I can book onboard for one in another year or 2 with the discount--maybe a longer one!

just remember cruises are cheaper in Sept-BUT it is a BIG Hurricane month!

I can do WDW on the cheap-wait for room only discounts and we can eat pretty cheap-don't like Free Dining because we don't eat that much-but we are way past the Character dining stage ;)

I cruise late August/early September (cheapest week the kids aren't in school) and weather is definitely a consideration. I wouldn't go without insurance--especially during hurricane season.

MY SIL was in Disney one year when it CLOSED down due to Hurricane-that was when she had her tickets "hooked" to the room stay-lost 2 days entrance

Yes, depending on your family size, it can be a significant additional cost. I had to renew my passport and our 2 girls (DH's has another 5 years on his) and it was $330.00! Insurance is not too costly IF you request it the same time you book the cruise. I paid $100.00 for our family of 4 for a cruise in August (hurricane season) with up to 1 million in travel evacuation costs. Remember that if you do not have a passport, and there is a medical emergency on the cruise or in the port which requires a medical flight to the US, you cannot fly.

Right. The insurance DCL offers is 8% of the fare, but there are better, cheaper options available. Just have to make sure to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

I'm risk averse but really don't stress about the passport issue. I know the risks and they're acceptable to me. But I get that many people don't feel that way.

Yes, I did not buy my trip insurance via DCL. I went with travel guard. I am risk averse too, but could never forgive myself if something happened and I could've prevented it by simply getting passports :). Besides, we are also using them for Canada this June so made sense :)

We were at Disney during the hurricane one year so the parks closed early and we were on "lock down" in the room, we missed a day but Disney gave us day hoppers good for the next 20 years so we didn't loose anything. They even upgraded my DD's child ticket to an adult in case we didn't get back before she aged out (like that would happen!!!).

I think it's a supply and demand thing. Disney only has four ships and they usually fill up.
