Would like to get to Florida for one last blast before the kids go back to school. Our work schedules are flexible and the kids are young enough that I don't mind them missing school for vacation, but I'd prefer to go in August. In 2003, we booked the first week of Sept, but there was a hurricane that cancelled our trip!

GoFlorida says average August temps are 33C. A little on the hot side.

Anyone been to WDW at the end of August?

We went last year Aug 23-Sept 2.
It was very hot. But bearable. Disney isn't stupid. They don't want people getting heat stroke. The queues are air conditioned, the stores and restaurants have a/c. There is tons of shade, and mister fans blowing at you.
You are never out in the direct sun for long, with the exception of waiting for parades, character meets etc....
We put on sunscreen in the morning at the hotel, and were good all day. And we are fair skinned and burn easily.
The exception was the day at the waterparks, where we put on more sunscreen every few hours.
Animal Kingdom also seems hotter for some reason!

It was busy, but that was because of Free dining. And it is free dining this year from Aug 26-Sept 22. So it will be more busy then. But a good deal!!!

It was great, but I think Disney is great any time of year!!

Have fun!!

We were also there the last week of August, returing the Sunday before school went in last year.
It was very, very hot and humid. I bought one of those mister fans, and am so glad, I don't think I could have surivied without it.:scared:
Waiting for the Indiana Jones show to start, I though I was going to melt.
None of us got fried, but my son did dehydrate one day, was sick all night, and took a full day to recover.
Yes, it was free dining, yes it was Disney,(translation, cheap and fun), but unless forced to, I wouldn't go then again.
This year, as in 2004, it's Nov.10-17, exiting just before the US Thanksgiving crowd arrives.

We have been the last three Augusts in a row. It is very hot and humid but I live in SW Ontario and it is just as hot here sometimes! Just make sure you drink a lot of water and pace yourselves. We always get up early and take a long break in the afternoon to swim and rest. After dinner it tends to be a bit cooler and less crowded so we head back to a park then.
We can't go during the school year due to my job so August is the only time we can really go for an extended amount of time. We always have a blast. We aren't going this year but plan to head down in August of 2008.
:tinker:

We have gone to WDW last week of August and first week of September for the last 4 years. Heading out again this year August 27th to September 8th. It is HOT --- DARN HOT. Every day is at least as hot as it is in Toronto today. So if the heat is not too much for you today, you will survive at the World. If you go have a great time.

We have been a couple of years at Labour Day and this year are going a few days before the end of Aug. It will be HOT so you really have to pace yourself and if you can stay out of the heat mid day. Even on our May trip we tried to be out of the parks by 1 or 2 and not go back until dinner time.

We really don't mind August at Disney - crowds seem smaller even with free dining and Ottawa is often just as hot and humid. Just have to take more breaks, use sunscreen, drink lots of water and go to the parks later in the day.

Hi I went with a friend a few years ago --hot --hot -hot -humid --
but hey we were in Disney,,we had a great time. I was acting as her support worker and I will tell you pushing a wheel -chair around Animal Kingdom (up-down-up-down) was one terrific work-out,lol,lol.I got the rare opportunity to see Disney through the eyes of someone who only dreamed of going there.
A trip I will always remember:)
We took advantage of the EMH and took breaks in the afternoon . I must admit food was not a big priority and we wasted alot of food--just toooo hot to eat . Well we did do a good job on the volcano ice-cream dessert at the Rain forest Cafe .:confused3
Misty fans -sun hat-sun block and a positive attitude go a long way.
Remember to pace yourself and have a Wonderful trip!!!
Hugs Mel

We're going in Aug too with the free DDP. Could anyone tell me where you can get those misty fans in Canada? I've see the portable fans, but none with the mist.

thanks!

I got misty-fans at Linens and Things a few years ago, check those kind of stores during the summer months. If you can't find one you can always fork over the big bucks at Disney and get one for your trip there. Remember to take extra batteries. If you can't find one what about using a small spritzer bottle and buying one of the dollar store fans. This combo should work just as well.

We were at Disney a few years ago in August and it was hot. There are lots of tips on the boards for beating the heat. Try taking a washcloth from your room to the parks and keeping it on the back of your neck when you are getting too warm. Keep a ziplock in your pack for the wet cloth.

Good luck and have a great time.

We couldn't find the misty fans locally so we purchased them at Walmart as soon as we got to Florida. They are great! We were there last August and, I agree, it was really, really hot. We just took our time, drank lots of water, and took lots of swim/shopping breaks. We found that sometimes it was more comfortable to do a little shopping at the hottest part of the day. We aren't used to that heat and we did find it slowed us down a bit. As long as you aren't trying to get everything done, you should be fine. Just adjust your schedule to your body. Have fun!!

Most public schools in Florida begin the school year this year on August 20th. So the theme parks will be less crowded beginning then, except for Labor Day weekend itself. Public schools in the northern U.S. tend to still begin after Labor Day weekend and that's when the lines at the parks disappear.

I saw a fan with a canister (or whatever you want to call it) that holds water and it mists you while the fan is running. I seen these at Walmart for $8.97.

We have been many times in aug and it is very hot ,but in toronto here it can be sometimes just as hot and humid. We go every year to disney in Aug as the kids are out of school then . We will be going down to Fort Desoto on Aug 26- 30 and then to Disney's Fort Wilderness on Aug 30- Sept 1 07 then will race back for start of school. We have also booked for Fort Wilderness for the last 3 weeks in aug of 2008 .:cool1:

I bought these on ebay earlier this week:

http://www.mistymate.com/cb02.html

$8.99USD each on ebay, plus shipping (I bought three, shipping was $11USD).

They say they are better than the fans: no batteries required, cool better than the fans, don't get you wet like the fans do.

ebay has alot of these listed.

HOT HOT HOT! Our first DisneyWorld trip was the Last week in August-1st week in Sept. I had one day where I got WAY overheated (it was at AK-and yes it seems hotter there!) I vowed never to go again in Aug. We went after that in Feb and that was awesome.
Guess what though........we are going again in AUGUST!! I just couldnt pass up the free dining:rotfl: I agree with what everyone else said-mister fans, lots of water and swim breaks!!

You will have a blast no matter what-just keep yourself cool:thumbsup2

We just got back last night and the mister fan was a MUST. We paid $17 for one at the park. But they sell them for $6 in every single store in Kissimee and Orlando, including Target, Walgreens, every souvenir shop had them. It was a must must must. You really want the one with the fan and the mister. And I would bring extra batteries too because if your kids are like mine, that thing is going all day long. It is a great toy for a four year old LOL.
