I took my sons to Prime Time Cafe last year, thinking they would like it, but they didn't! My 13 DS was made to wear an Ariel bib and was absolutely mortified throughout dinner. He NEVER wants me to take him back there (though I thought it was very funny).

He's a big barbeque fan, so I was thinking of taking him to Whispering Canyon Cafe on our upcoming trip because I know he'll love their food. But I'm afraid he might hate it like he did Prime Time?? I think he'll think the soda/refill thing is funny, but not sure if they would embarress him the way they did at Prime Time?

Any kids hate WCC? Or were embarressed?

Edited to add: How DO you spell "embarressed" - it looks wrong, but I don't know how to fix it!

Hi Kimberly,

It depends on your server, but there's a good chance they will!

You could always take your server aside and mention that you'd prefer to be left out of the antics. Although to be honest, the flurry of activity is the main reason to go there!

(I think it's "embarrassed")

if he was embarassed at Prime Time, I don't know if he'll fare better at WCC because I to me Prime Time was just tame and aside from the servers acting like family, didn't really have antics like WCC.

However, WCC is also hit and miss. Sometimes you get a quiet server, sometimes not. If you're really set on going to WCC just ask that NOT to be seated where Bobby, Suzanne, Judith, and Al to name a few are serving you because I can tell you now, with those guys you're sure to get antics.

What are some of the "antics" at WCC? I've heard about the ketchup, but nothing else. I would really like to know so I can make sure to set up my DH (my idea of entertainment :rolleyes1 ) Besides asking for ketchup, what else can I provoke? TIA

The thing with WCC is that it was never intended to be like 50's PT, but the waitstaff sorta evolved into that - you know? So not all waitstaff play along because it's not part of the themeing like PT is. You can go and have a regular waiter there or have one that is completely over the top.

Plus, there have been lots of reports of people trying to get attention and the waiter NOT responding to it because it's planned. And, there are reports of people upset because their waiter wasn't playful at all.

*I* would make a PS there if you want to dine there, when you check in with the hostess tell him/her that you know sometimes the waiters are very playful with their guests you have a sensitive son that doesnt' respond well to that, and can you please be seated with someone that won't draw attention to our party. Problem solved!

We eat at WCC each trip, believe me I am not an attention seeker. My children DS &DD both 12 laugh at the antics around them, but we have never ever been embarrassed there. Most CM's sense your personalitly and will completely leave you alone. My DS also loves BBQ food and loves this restaurant. Go, you will love it.

I was going to post just this - we did it with PT as we love the food and our family loves the antics. However in December we went with dear BIL/SIL and MIL/FIL and it would not have been "appreciated". Our server was wonderful, he played up the cousin and familiy aspect without the antics, the food was great as usual and even my shy in laws enjoyed watching the other tables play about.

I can't imagine WC being much different, have it noted on the PS/AR and then be sure and mention it to the person checking you in. I have a very sensitive dd and she would not have been thrilled about the antics even at PTC- luckily this made her eat every thing on her plate, keep her elbows off the table and behave like a llady" this diverted the attention to DH the first trip as he forgot to remove his cap.

Anyway, if the food looks good and if they get carried away then volunteer to do the things your son would have to do - then the waiter/waitress will get it.

I think WCC is more on the "prankster" end than the sarcastic end. The last time we went we were a party of 11. When one of the "teenage" girls in our party asked for more water, the server came out with a huge tub of water (a clear bucket), with about 6 straws stick into each other to make a big straw and then he made a few of these straws in a mini version. Seemed to be more on the "joke" side. One time when we had lunch there, a man was dining by himself and he had a huge stuffed bear sitting on the seat next to him. Apparently this is the bear that "keeps company with those dining alone". Thought that was actually pretty cute.

My DS14 would be mortified too, if someone tried to put a bib on him. lol I don't think I'd allow a waitress to do that, because I know how DS would react.

My older DS17, however, would probably play along and think it was funny. lol

We're going to 50's Prime Time and WCC in a couple of weeks, and I've assured DS14 that I won't allow any of the wait staff to embarrass him in any way. We've been to 50'sPT before, and our waitress was perfect; she got into the roll a bit without going over the top. She had us "set the table" by handing us the placemats and silverware, and then when she found out that DSs were missing school that week, she gave them some math riddles to solve. Cute things like that are fine :)

Hopefully we'll get some low-key servers at both places, but if not, I'll tactfully handle it to ensure DS has a good time and isn't made to feel uncomfortable, while at the same time try to keep things light and in the mood of the restaurant.

You're still working on those meals ??? :)

We had a pretty tame server at WCC when we went. Had a wild one next to us though, but I didn't see anything that would really embarrass the boys. It's just so loud in the restaurant that it's hard to hear what's going on around you anyway. I think they would like it.
