Crisis averted! He had a big glass of milk, which will keep him a bit full until lunch, which is only an hour and a half away, so in the meantime, we're headed out to ride his bike along our river trail while I run along behind. I need a bike too!

I told him I wasn't trying to be mean earlier, and re-explained the whole getting used to no more snacks at school, etc. He said, "I knew you weren't being mean to me, I just said you were because I was mad." :rotfl: KIDS!

I'd love to keep watching the Magic's progress, but have to get some exercise and fresh air! :thumbsup2 It's a beautiful day here. Only 59F degrees so far, but that means I won't get sweaty! :rotfl2:

Oh my gosh, I've got one grumpy kid! I'm trying to get him used to just eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner without all the snacks for 2 reasons: 1. he's very overweight and 2. there are no more snacks at school beyond kindergarten, so he'd better get used to it now instead of throwing a fit at school. He just told me he wants to eat and I refused, so a major fit went on for a while. I just calmly kept explaining to him that our bodies don't need to eat until lunch time, etc. and reminded him about how it will be at school this year. Hopefully with eliminating those 2 snacks at school, his weight will be back in the normal range. :thumbsup2

Yup, I'm a mean mom, but I've had many discussions with his dad about how his dad feeds him. He lets him eat those McDonald's breakfast sandwiches every day he's over there, usually TWO of them! I told him that's a WHOLE day of fat and most of a day's amount of calories! I told him the best cereal I've found so far is Mighty Bites made by Kashi because it has more protein and less sugar than other branks of cereal and keeps him fuller longer.

Anyway, it's a struggle to have him eat the right things here when he can run to his dad's and get all the junk food and candy and juice boxes (which I refuse to buy) and fatening stuff over there. Yes, we made cupcakes here last night, but I do allow the occasional goodie, just not all day every day like he gets over there. :sad2:

Try slicing up celery and carrots (separately cuz kids don't liked mixed up food too much) and put a dime size drop of ranch dressing or peanut butter (if he isn't allergic) at the bottom of the container (make a container with the flip up sides so he can do it himself) Tell him it is a healthy snack and he can use the dipper to make it fun like catching fish in the ocean. It's healthy, plus its loaded with water for hydration and he gets the chewing sensation and gains the taste for healthy food.

It's a little trick that works for kids and smokers. That chewing sensation could be related to the licking in his brain, so it could be a real help to him. By not having the chewing sensation he may lick more to replace the oral fixation. Only use a half stick of celery and carrot. You can also show him a chart of veggies and have him choose his veggie each day and let him put his dipper into the container. that makes him a part of the process. Do they have a snack break for the kids around 10am?

If he says no, do it each day at the same time and tell him that is his choice. It takes children 12 times of exposure before their brain will accept the new food. When he's hungry he'll eat it.

Don't give up and say "oh that won't work for my kid" (I'm going to name my next book that title -can't tell you how often parents tell us that at our parent meetings. It's called destructive parenting.

This way you're teaching him not to reactively starve himself which is unhealthy dieting, instead you're teaching him proactive healthy eating. Give it a shot, it will be healthy for both of you and it is a pattern that lasts for life.

I just noticed that they don't have snack at school, so just try this to wean him down to no snack and then make that his afterschool snack.

They don't do snacktime at school beyond kindergarten, so after breakfast, his next opportunity to eat will be lunch, so that's why I'm trying to get him adjusted to that this week so he's not throwing fits at the school about suddenly losing snacktime. Healthy snacks aren't a problem to get him to eat, it's just that he won't have any at all starting next week when school starts, so I'm just trying to ease him off this week. :thumbsup2

;) And I posted before reading this post! Yup, I always bring a snack like this from home in the morning for him to have after school on the way to karate or OT.

So we had a fun bike ride on the river trail! Lunch and watching more Flipper before heading to his 6-year checkup. Then, THE FIRE STATION afterwards!

I'm so ticked off. Photobucket finally cooperated and I got as far as selecting my photos to upload, then Internet Explorer CLOSED everything on me! :headache: I hate computers.

Just turned on the Olympics - and here are my 2 countries playing each other in volleyball! Brasil vs USA. You guys did know I have dual citizenship, right? Is this for the gold? Whe do the closing ceremories start?

How did you get dual citizenship? Were you born in Brazil?

Venetia&Bubba - sorry Carnival was awful. I love the pictures you posted. I want to go back on vacation :sad1:

I hope the party went well, and it did seem like you ladies were having a ball chit chatting. :goodvibes

I know I was having a great relaxing evening! It'll have to be done again :thumbsup2

NAN - congrats to Wilson! :thumbsup2 Sounds like it was a great day for all.

So Marilyn . . . who is this Mayor of London I just saw on the closing ceremonies? Is he related to our Billy Carter? Everyone else looked so tailored and dapper, and the London Mayor kind of looked like he rolled out of bed and put on his suit from the Men's Wearhouse . . .

Busy weekend - Sophia and I biked a trail on the Ohio-Erie Canal yesterday. We went 16 miles - I was very proud of her!

We thought the same thing about the Mayor of London :lmao: When they were exitting he even put his hands in his pockets - he looked so scruffy compared to the other gentlemen. My BIL said he looked like the mayor of our small town! :lmao: :lmao:

WOW! Long bike ride! :worship:

Ian - great WW story!

Did you like the London presentation? There are some funny threads on boards over here about what we might see at the opening ceremony etc, and more importantly what we hope we don't!!!:lmao: :lmao:

I keep laughing because our committee keep saying that our games won't be on the great extravagant scale as Beijing but will be different etc etc. Basically they are saying we aren't spending lots of money(?!) on them!!!:lmao:

However, some country is going to have to start down scaling the extravagance at some time I guess.

Marilyn, I thought the London presentation was strage but entertaining. Wish they had been able to give direct feed to the TV's for sound so we could her the pop singer better. My favourite bit was the British girl getting the soccer ball from the Chinese girl.

I'm proud of myself today. Today was day 1 of getting up early to do some WiiFit instead of just trying to fit it into evenings. I was too tired and it didn't go well, but it was a start :)
Well, coffee break is over. Time to get back to work.

That's just terrible that they won't allow him to have a snack. I didn't know schools did that. We have one high school that we teach in that calls snack time "nutrition break" and if they are caught having unhealthy snacks the parents are called in! How's that for a rule? :rotfl2:

Hey Marilyn, I did really enjoy the presentation. London is spending 20 billion on the enhancements, but Bejing spent 40 Billion and half the venues were empty. I'll bet London will be spectacular.

Then as adults they come to people like me, to learn to eat not based on the clock, but based on their hunger signals.

A very good point. I've read about 5 books on all different types of motivation and when I was doing research on emotional eating I found this. So many recovering addicts are emotional eaters as they are still looking for a psychological satisfaction to fill an empty hole. Maybe something it may be useful to your work.

Nan,

Do I have your attention now? Give Wilson a big congratulations.

I just think it's fascinating and wonderful how talented and how many interests your kids have, and how you and Paul support and encourage them. So great for building skills for the future.

Thanks Ian :goodvibes I tell him when he gets home at 3pm

He went to school today in a completely mismatched outfit, on purpose. I'll post some pics later, it was really a hoot.

Hi Deborah!!

Sorry I missed you on IM before... I was out shopping for last minute things for my trip on Wednesday... :goodvibes

Hey yourself.

Hey....here's what I'm having for lunch and the Wine Country Trottoria

Did you post the photo from you camera-phone? If so, HOW?

I love the idea of enforcing healthy snacks! Great plan in that school! For kindergarten, the school sent home a list of approved healthy snacks that they strongly suggest kids bring, and Tyler was good about asking me every day if the snack he was taking was on the healthy list. ;)

No snacks is the norm around here. It was that way when I was in school too, except for kindergarten. It's just standard. I don't agree with it either, but can't do much about it. :sad2:

So we're home from another fun day out! The rivertrail bike ride (fast walk for me) was wonderful because of the beautiful weather! The fire station we went to also has a fire history museum inside, so that's always one of our favorites. And as usual, a firefighter recognized Tyler from going to a different station. We go to different ones all the time, making our rounds, and the firefighters also rotate stations, so everywhere we go, there's usually at least one who knows Tyler. :thumbsup2

Now, fixing a quick dinner and a few posts while dinner gets ready. Simple night, spaghetti (regular noodles for me and Pirates of the Caribbean shaped noodles for Tyler -- LOVE the Disney Magic Selections brand), garlic bread, peas, and probably pineapple for dessert. Simple but yummy!!!

Will check back later! I hope I can post a tiny video clip of karate class today.

I am hoping to do the Princess Half- Marathon on March 6-8, 2009. We will see how the training goes. Today did not go well as 25 minutes of walking my legs broke out into hives and turned bright red! I don't think thats supposed to happen.
