Here in BC we have a Provincial Sales tax that is sitting at 7% and we have a national
Goods and
Services
Tax that is at 5% for a total of 12% sales tax added to prices of certain items. There is a real mix of what is taxable and what isn't that gets a little confusing at times, but it is also the main reason why we Canadians tend to worry a lot about Duty when ordering things from the US (or at least I do).
But an example of pricing is that video camera Holly was looking at. On Amazon.com I found it for $199.95 USD. It isn't even available on the Amazon.ca website (our
Amazon really sucks as it ONLY seems to sell books and they aren't that great of a price for an online retailer). I did find it on the Costco.ca website and the price there was $369.99 CDN.
To do the dollar conversion, the Amazon.com price came in at $257.00 CDN (compared to $369.99 CDN at Costco) and the Costco.ca price worked out to $287.66 USD. Plus I would still have to add 5% GST to the Costco price (generally if it is out of Province sale you don't have to add the Provincial sales tax), in addition to the shipping which is also subject to taxes.
