Way OT - Bear, ACK!!

Crazy thing ... I almost hit a bear with my car this morning!!! It was HUGE and it ran from the left side of the road to the right and I had to SLAM on the brakes and seriously veer to the left to avoid the thing! I had no idea there were bears in Central New York State!

Luckily I've never had an encounter with one myself, but there are bear sightings that make the local news every now and then.

Usually the bears stay rather contained in the Alleghany region, but we've had them in peoples back yards in the immediate area too.

I bet seeing one on the road was quite an eye opener

Up hear northern NJ I see at least 1 bear a day until winter.

I would have understood if you said the Bronx, but anything north of that could be bear territory.

Lois finally saw her first bear family in our area of NJ last month. They're expanding their past population areas.

I rember seeing bears at a farm that my maternal grandparents had once own when I was very young in Elmira/Campbell area in NY.


My folks have bears issues in central PA.

Oh we get those too, bears and snakes. Although it has been one year since I saw a rattlesnake, although my son did see one on a trail at Scout Summer Camp. Luckily we don't have alligators yet.


Here's a bear opening my neighbors "Bear Proof" garbage pail, he just unscrewed the lid.

Wow, I'm glad you are ok.

I used to like bears until we watched several rip the bumper off a van at one of those animal parks that you can drive through in South Dakota. We figure they must've hit some critter and the bears smelled the remains.

Then another one climbed on the hood of our van and looked in the windshield, freaking us out. I kind of miss the old van, that bear claw hole he left on the bumper was a nice conversation starter.

Yeah, Greg and Lois, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they exist around here ... haha.

NC Belle, I live very near Elmira - only about 10 miles north!

Darrengs, great pic!! He/she looks cute in that picture but I can imagine that I would freak out a little if that were my lawn and garbage can!
