Help! My neice just emailed me to ask if I can bring a watermelon over tomorrow for a special centerpiece. We live in Northeastern PA, and are in the midst of the snow. Where can I find a watermelon this time of year? Any suggestions? (We do have a Sam's Club and a Super Walmart about 20 minutes away..)

I sure don't think I could find a watermelon in my city in December.

Good luck in your search, I wouldn't know where to look!!

tell her if she wants a watermelon to get it herself. :p

Pop Daddy,
she is stuck at work, and we need it for her mom's baby shower tomorrow... oh well. I guess fruit salad will have to suffice...

Hmm.. Georgia isn't getting any snow is it? Might be a consideration!::yes::

Nope, no snow where I'm at (but there's a light dusting about 15 minutes from here;)). There were several watermelons in the store when I was there the other day. Not sure they taste red-ripe though.:p

How about a squash for a center piece, you could probably find one of them in the grocery store. ::yes::

We were going to make a baby carriage out of the watermelon, and have fruit salad inside. Oh, well. Not a huge problem, I am sure my neice will understand.
:)

That sounds like such a cute idea. :) I'm sure she just got so excited thinking of the possibilities, she didn't realize that watermelons are not readily available this time of year. Why don't you ask her if the guest of honor would mind carrying the baby a bit longer until watermelon is in season again. ;)

Seriously, I'd call her and see if the two of you can come up with a plan B. :)

I've made the baby carraige out of a honey dew melon in the past. It is a lot smaller, but it does work, I also think it is a lot cuter than the larger version.

Thanks for all the ideas. We didn't end up having it at all, but everyone had a good time anyway! My neice is 20, and this is her baby brother we are waiting for! Her mom and dad waited a long time for him, so we were sure glad to be able to shower my SIL today. ::yes::

A watermelon in DECEMBER? I don't think they grow in the snow. There are a seasonal item so I don't think anyone would have one. I was at Sam's Saturday and I didn't see any.

I didn't see this until now. The Price Chopper on the O'Neill Highway in Dunmore had watermelons last week when I shopped there. They also had some other smaller kind of melon that looked like a watermelon, but was smaller.

Glad everything worked out, though!
