Watercraft rentals

Couple of questions:

Do you have to have a boat license to operate the boats? (I have one)

Can you rent to boat so that you can see the fireworks at night on the lake?
I know that you can do specialty cruises, but that is for 8 people. Was looking to do something romantic with my wife.

Can you rent them if you aren't staying at that resort?

Whats the best deal for the money? I realize that this is going be opinions. Never been to WDW and trying to play something special.

My husband has been able to rent the boats ( not the water mice) and does not have a boating license. You do not need to be staying at that particular resort and no you can't rent them for the fireworks. I don't remember what time they close but it was before it got dark.

They do have cruises you can go on where a CM captains the boat - it's the pontoon party style boat. They hold 8-10 guests. You can read about it here:

We tried to do this on a recent trip - it was actually a coordinated cruise with other Diser's so we all could split the cost - but unfortunately the cruise got canceled due to inclement weather (lightning). It was a bummer because I was really looking forward to it. There's a sticky thread at the top of the Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies board where you can "find one to share".

edit: sorry, I must have skimmed over the part where you said you weren't interested in the specialty cruise. When we were hanging out waiting to see if the cruise was a go or a no-go, we had lots of fun talking to the other Dis'rs that were there. Not "romantic" but it sure was fun socializing with everyone and nice to put faces with names. We had the opportunity to go to The California Grill while my parents watched my ds. They have a deck on the roof top where you can watch Wishes at MK from (although it was unique, I admit I still think it's better seen in the park). We really enjoyed our meal there.
