In April 2002, we were away for a total of 15 days- the 7 day cruise + WDW after. Our neighbor was going to be gone at the same time too. We felt the house would be OK, it's April, not January... We travel often & nothing has ever happened... We kept the heat on low since it was still chilly & did not turn the water off, as we have hot water baseboard heat... ( We have since learned you can, as the system is self contained...) We did turn off the water values to the washing machine, as a friend of ours had the same thing happen as you did AKB.
We had a great trip until we got home. Our icemaker water line was pvc ( plastic ). Woodwork splintered around where the line came up thru the floor from the basement, poked a hole in it & flooded almost the entire 1st floor of our home & our basement below. We have no idea when it started, but from the damage incurred, my DH thinks it was as we closed the garage door & left the driveway... We were in the middle of a drought here in the NE at the time, so our well pump burnt up too as a result of the running water. Almost 2 yrs. later, we are almost done... Everything needed to be replaced- floors, kitchen, built in bookcases, furniture, you name it- total reconstruction. Thank God for insurance! It was a mess...
DVCreg~ I really feel for what you are going through. It was SO cold last week- it was unbearable here. It's so hard to deal with problems like this in your own home, when you walk through the door tan, rested and relaxed.... You have a good attitude. Keep your sense of humor. That's what got us through our disaster! AKB~ I agree. You have to laugh, or you'll make yourself crazy! We refer to ours as the " Never ending flood project"...
Good luck! I wish you the best!
~ Linda
