Our property is one tract of 3 that has been split from a 60+ acre tract before us or our neighbors bought them. When we noticed, years ago, that one neighbor's barn and garage was listed on our property in the county tax info, DH went down and filed a change of information in person. It didn't appear to be removed from our tax documentation so DH called about it after that. Then, in 2008, he paid our taxes under protest.
DH decided to stay home to work, today, as we were supposed to have a bad snow storm which didn't happen. A man came to the door this afternoon and DH spoke to him. He was from the county tax department come out in response to DH paying taxes under protest in 2008.
He wanted to know where our garage and barn were....like we had hidden them. DH told him we don't have a barn or garage. Tax man says he is going to take some measurements of the house and (I'm assuming) look around some. He told DH that us not having a physical barn and garage, even though we've been taxed for them for over 10 years was "water under the bridge".
I asked DH what that means!?
I don't think that protesting being taxed for buildings that don't exist means 'water under the bridge'....I think it means the taxes previously paid need to be adjusted and refunded. But, I'm just the tax payer. I guess if you're representing the taxing department, being overtaxed means something else.
