I'm hoping my budget minded friends can lend me some insight into this! We have very hard water where we live. Our glasses and utensils are super spotted and we've had to have our one year old dishwasher repaired twice due to problems from our hard water (our water softener was off for about 6 months). We have city water and it is well known in our area that the water is seriously hard. Well, the city has now banned salt water systems for water hardness. I now need to replace my system. The prices on alternatie systems range from a couple hundred to the low 5 figures! I'd prefer to keep in the lower 4 figures if possible.
Right now, I can't tell which systems are actually good for hard water. I don't care about the taste of the water, I just don't want my appliances and faucets to continue to have problems from our hard water. Plus I'm not thrilled about the mineral build up on everything. I don't want to overspend for a system and many of the systems out there have some type of proprietary claim associated with their technology which makes it difficult to weed through.
Has anyone researched this to find out which one works the best and has the best return on investment? I'm almost to the point of just renting a traditional salt water canister (we're still allowed to do that), but in many cases the cost to install the system will be less than if we rent (over time). We've lived in our home for more than 6 years and have no plans to ever move. I'm more concerned over the lifetime cost of the system than in the initial cost since it is unlikely that we will move from our home.
Thanks for any advice, I truly appreciate it!
Jennifer
