Water Smell

We just returned from our first visit home and had a wonderful time. We stayed at VWL and we were pleased with the accomodations and the lodge's proximity to MK.

The only issue we had was the smell and taste of the water while there. When we did laundry, I noticed that the clothes smelled like the water -- a kind of high mineral content type of smell. We found the same smell in the shower and faucet water so we drank bottled water all week. Is this just a WDW issue at this time of year or is it always this way? We found the water quality to be fine offsite.

Just wondering...

No...this is an ALL THE TIME issue as far back as I can recall! I lived in both the Orlando (city limits) area and in South Florida almost my entire life and the water was ALWAYS yucky!!!

Maybe it was just our happiness at being there, but at the beginning of our BCV stay in May, it didn't seem that the water there was that bad. VB, the other part of the stay had the bad tasting water (to us) on that trip.

Bobbi :)

Hubby notices it, but the kids and I don't. Not at WDW anyway. Other places in Florida, it is REALLY bad. I think that WDW does at least have a filtering system in place to make it better.

That said, we bought a filter water bottle which seems to work great. Hubby is fine with it and we aren't lugging around full bottles of water all day (fill it when you want to drink...maybe carry it full for a bit, but you can dump it without "using" the filter)

Anyway, I have never noticed a smell on our clothes, but I do notice that whites don't come as clean there and stains don't come out as well. I take a product like oxy-clean to give the detergent a boost and it seems to help.

All I can say is that the WDW tap water is better than the tap water we have here at home :( We drink it without any problems, but usually get a bottle in the parks simply for the convenience of being able to carry and cap it.

That smell and taste is from the high amount of SULFUR in the water, well that, and the enormous amount of chlorine to stop bacteria from growing.

He have always thought the water there was awful! We have well water from a very deep well at home, so the sulfur smell in Florida makes the water and coffee and tea made from it nearly impossible for us to drink. We buy bottled water for everything down there!

That is the cool thing about using this filter bottle Diane - you can filter any water through it in a short periord of time. It gets used constantly on our trips. (I have heard of people taking those Brita screw on filters for the faucets as well). When we make coffee or get water for bedtime, just a quick squirt through the bottle and the water tastes just like our tap from home or at least close enough that we don't notice a difference. Also saves me from lugging gallons of water to our room from the grocery store. :)

The water is alwasy funky, but WL, MK, and the other MK resorts are by far the worse. I think they have the most sulfer. I can handle the water at OKW--if I have to take a quick pill, and don't notice the smell on the laundry or shower so much. BCV's are not too bad either. POR, POFQ, POP, AS SP, AS Mu, CSR and Dolphin were not too bad.

Yep, we think it is bad too. We were thinking of buying a filter water bottle this trip, I'm glad to hear they work well! FYI, if you ever go to Disneyland the water stinks there too. It is because they have to soften it right? I know my dad's house in Ocala didn't have a water softener and the water tasted alright, but it was so hard to take a shower or wash clothes, the soap just won't rinse well with hard water.

Hey--
I have noticed the water, both smell and taste, from our very first trip--WL--it must be the water because I have also noticed that SAME smell on some of the water rides inside the parks to hotels outside WDW! DH-DD don't seem to notice it at all---guess some folks do and some don't. Still doesn't keep me from enjoying the most AWESOME place in the world, but I am glad to get a shower that doesn't leave that smell on my skin and brush my teeth using water that doesn't make me cringe----do what we do, take bottled water to drink, etc., as far as laundry, wait til you get home to do it---you're on vacation after all!

I just got home from Jacksonville, I noticed it there in the shower.

We stayed at Poly about 2 years ago and noticed a mineral and I know this sounds funny but a "dry" taste in the water. It actually seemed to dry your mouth out. We took a brita type filter pitcher to BCV last January and found we didn't need it. So maybe MK areas have different water. Going again in December to BCV and will be packing pitcher just in case.

It's a pretty consistent thing across Florida. My wife grew up in Melbourne, and it was the case then, and technology hasn't advanced quite enough yet to make reconditioning drinking water on a large-scale basis financially feasible.
