Water purification/softner systems

Anyone purchase a steeltec water purification/softner system? We live in the Chicagoland area and have just horrible water. It smells, and is very hard.

We had someone from Artesian Waters come in tonight and do a speal about the steeltec whole house system that is a water purification/softner unit. We were given the price of $3500 installed. I wanted to know if this is reasonable or if we are being scamed. Also if you purchased it are you happy with it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The last house we owned had a whole house water system put in by the previous owners. It was a company called EcoWater and the paperwork they left us indicated they'd paid $5000 for it and this would have been about 7 years ago.

We are up near O'Hare, just have a softner, a Sears unit. It has been in for many years. I think it might have been about $400 back then.. I do know complete water systems installations can be a HUGE markup item.

We have an ecowater water softener and a reverse osmosis system. The two units together were about $1400 installed. I would check around to some other water softener companies, Culligan, Ecowater, etc and see if you can get a better deal.

I have tried to research this online, but cannot find much information on price or even quality of systems. It is getting really frustrating! We know we need something because the water is really bad. There are times when we take a shower and the water smells like rotten eggs. I have also noticed at times that the water has a yellow tint to it. I was yelling at the kids for not flushing the toilet and later discovered it was just the water. We drink mostly bottle water, even with the filter on the fridg. the water still tastes awful. I also put in a filter on the shower and I have to replace it after about 2 months instead of the 6 months it recomended.

I wish there was a place to go that I could get honest answers as to what we really need, compaire systems, and get prices. I would like to find a place that actual consumers give their oppinions.

We also had Artesian Waters come to our home. The salesperson promised we would never have to clean our shower again. This person also said we would save $71 a month on soaps and other costs. This person said the water system qualified for a federal tax credit. I am a CPA so I was very interested in that as I had never heard of such a thing. I researched it and never found a thing. I requested some details, no response ever concerning my inquiry.

This person told us they close 9 out of 10 of their sales presentations (I'm sure it is because of all the lies they tell while in your home). This person quoted us $4500 for the system. When we said directly that there is no way we would spend that kind of money without sleeping on it, the salesperson played this game with us "don't you believe me", "why wouldn't you want to do this for your children?" Three weeks later, the company regional sales person called and offered it to us for $2500. Another week later they called and said "What will you buy it for, we are getting a huge rebate from the manufacturer and we can go really low." We said, "If we get another call from your organization before we get answers about the claims made by the inital sales rep, we will contact our attorney." So far no more calls.

We were promised a $50 gas card to listen to their pitch. Never arrived. When we called to follow-up, here was the story "Oh, we had the wrong address some how. I would love to send you one right away, but we are waiting for another big batch of the cards to come in. They should be here in a week or two."

I am very close to contacting the authorities on this. Perhaps we got their one very bad sales rep, or perhaps it is a culture at their organization as not a single person has bothered to try and answer our questions about the seemingly fraudulent claims made by their sales rep.
