Water-proof rain jackets that don't make you sweat!

I actually need suggestions for my 11 yo ds' upcoming boy scout camping trip and everyone is wealth of information here! We do have ponchos but they are more awkward than rain jackets. I went to some sporting goods stores and was able to find reasonably priced rain pants but lighter weight jackets cost an arm and a leg (about $60 on average!). The cheaper ones are all made of a very heavy plastic that would be very hot in warmer weather. Any suggestions and where I can find something reasonably priced - I hesitate to spend alot because things will get lost at camp!

try the other sporting good stores in your area. I just send mine with the ponchos., some of the camps my son has gone onto they have to hike into and carry that pack on themselves. .. so they learn real quick what are their 10 essentials to pack and what bulks it up .. . go by the list they give you. . . ours always say ponchos,when they are needed. . . when they do the snow thing the list changes to heavy coats of course. ..

I just got a jacket for my DD at Dick's Sporting Goods. It was on-sale for $24.

It is made by Columbia and looks like a windbreaker but it said it was water resistant and it had a nice hood that provided great coverage w.o being too warm or awkward. For her camp out it was very warm and drizzling, not pouring... so it worked out well. I tried to search the website for the one I got but I can't find it. I did come accross this though...

That's a pretty good price. I went to Dick's but don't recall seeing any jackets in that price range. I did notice, however, that there were many more choices for girls - as always! Children's Place used to carry a windbreaker/water resistant jacket but it's not been stocked yet this year.

"DriDucks fabric keeps you dry and comfortable by allowing body heat and moisture to escape, while repelling water and blocking wind. DriDucks material is so technically advanced, ultra-lightweight, and space saving, this awesome rain suit can be stored virtually anywhere."
It is kind of a funky material, but lightweight. We've tried a lot of other options...ponchos, rain jackets, etc. but all become cumbersome, hot and sweaty.
