Water dripping from the ceiling?

We were sitting in the living room tonite and noticed that water was dripping from the middle of the ceiling along a crack that appeared awhile back.

DD was upstairs taking a bath almost immediately above this "leak".

Dumb question but what could be causing this leak and why would it be dripping thru the ceiling? Will a plumber have to rip down the ceiling to get to whatever is leaking?

After DD let the water out of the tub then the drips stopped. :confused3 DH tried to replicate the drips by running water in the tub and flushing the toilet but it didn't drip again.

Ugh. It's always something. How pricey are plumbers these days?

Maybe there is a leak around the overflow drain?

Whatever it is, my sympathies.

agnes!

I feel for you, I really do. We had something similar happen only it was when we'd shower.

One time we heard our dog barking and barking. I went downstairs to see what his problem was and he was just lying on the floor barking for no reason. Then I noticed the wet spot on his head. :lmao: Turns out the little guy was lying directly under where the leak was!

We had to cover all the tile with plastic to keep it from happening. We were about to renovate our entire house (including the bathroom) so we weren't about to do too much at that point. I showered with plastic for a year. It drove me INSANE!!!

Anyway...sorry, didn't mean to go on and on. I just know all too well how you feel right now.

I sure hope it's something simple! :flower3:

you need a leak detection plumber and im afraid you need one fast ! you could be in a lot of trouble if you wait, so please try and get someone to look at it fast, in the meantime if you have another shower or bath use it. it could be coming from the drain, the pipes, cracks around the tub, any number of things. My parents had a tub that leaked like this upstairs once, it would only leak while someone was standing in the tub though, not if someone was outside of it, the weight shifted something and caused leaks. wood will rot, mold will form, lots of bad stuff can happen the longer you wait. Good luck

We have a leaky shower--apparently water leaks through the tile, and the "shower pan" is supposed to catch it all but the shower pan itself must leak. It only leaks when somebody uses the shower and then it only leaks SOMETIMES. Someday we will find a contractor willing to do small jobs and will get it fixed. Currently, we just use the other shower.

When we have had this, it has been from around the top of the tub where the tile/ tub seam is caulked or around the shower in the same place, where the floor tile meets the wall tile. (both places was a corner)

We had a leak in the overflow thing and had to have the ceiling ripped apart. Our house is 74 years old and the plumber had some choice words about how they did the plumbing back then. This happened a few months ago and we haven't fixed the hole. I noticed a drip again when one of the kids was taking a bath and found out that was happening because there was water next to the bath tub and the caulking needs to be replaced.

When your daughter was taking her bath, did you have water on the floor beside the tub? If so, chances are that the leak is going down the side of the bath tub and through the floor. I would clean the old caulking from around the tub and replace it with new caulking. Good Luck.:thumbsup2

We had the same problem. We re-caulked around the tub and that fixed it.

No advice but I do have empathy. It has been raining really hard here and the other week, I heard a dripping sound. I went upstairs and found where it was dripping from the ceiling and right into the toilet. :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone. I hope it is just the caulking around the tub.

DD is 10 so there is a good chance there was water splashed out onto the floor. I hope that is all it is but I want to have a plumber look at it just to make sure.

We had this happen once when DD left the shower curtain on the outside of the tub instead of the inside. Water ran down the curtain and through the seal by the floor and tub.
