I'm pretty sure that the war actually happened...though from there I'm not sure. I know that that movie changed the story a lot even from the story that is told in text books. Maybe someone else knows more specifically.
I'm not sure that any part of that was "real" As far as I knew the whole Helen of Troy was just from the epic poem The Iliad I did read, once, that she might have be based on a real life person, but that it wasn't a real story itself. After all her father was supposed to be Zeus, so I never thought she was real.
There might be truth to the war taking place, but the story line behind it was mythology. At least that is what I was taught when we studied it and the whole story behind Achilles.
I am not much for Brad Pitt either... but he did look very good in that flick
