We are planning a DC trip in Aug,2010.we plan to do the normal stuff like Jefferson, White House and Washington monuments using the metro system. Would we be better off at the Embassy suites in Cyrstal city or Chevy Chase pavillion. thks:confused3

Just got back today from DC/Maryland. We stayed at the Hampton Inn/ Homewood Suites in Silver Spring MD. They offered free breakfast every morning and Mon-Thur they offer free dinner with beverages (including beer and wine). It was 5 minutes from the red line and we had no problems.

I agree Chrystal City location would be my choice too. I work in Wash. DC (next to the Wash.moment/mall/white house). Been here for 30+ years. Our USG building has the National Aquarium in it, plus the White House visitor center. This has been the hottest summer I ever remember, but the tourist are here. It seems like an especially busier summer tourist season then past years. If you look for a cool place to take a break, there is a huge food court under the Ronald Reagan Building. This is a typical mall type food court with restrooms! (which are hard to find while visiting Wash. DC since access to USG buildings are denied to visitors). This building is located a couple of blocks from Metro center and a block from the National Mall. Most folks don't know this exist because you can't see it. It is open to the public, though you do have to go through metal detectors, but you have to do that for all USG buildings now. Nothing special at the food court, but it has AC and all of the normal places like your local mall. Since I'm across the street from the RR building, we have a special tunnel under the road that we can take to get to the food court without having to go out into the elements. When I first started working at my building, I use to spend my lunch hours over at the Smithsonians walking around. Now, not so much. I guess when you see the White House and Wash. Momument every day, it gets a little old. Heck, I can hear the helicopter(s) leave the White House when the Prez goes somewhere! Remember, when taking the metro/subway, "stand on the right, walk on the left" -- commuters can be overwhelming, esp. a busy hub like Metro Center.
