I've read plenty of threads on D.C. here, but I was wondering if it is a good place to visit a day or 2 after Christmas? Is everything open?

Dh works for the ARC. They follow all of the Government Holidays and I am pretty sure everything is open. The nice thing is, we generally get snow in Jan and Feb so you are picking a good time weather wise...cold, but tha tis all. Plus, there are a lot of extra things to do, like you get to see the Christmas Trees from all the states and the national christmas tree all lit up at night.

There are usually concerts going on there too. And while hotel and Metro are expensive, everything else is already paid for through tax dollars...so free once you get there. I think if you dont mind the cold..it is a great time to come!

Yup, everything is open, except for Christmas Day.

That will be a nice time to visit! Just as the pp said, most likely no snow, and not too bitterly cold. (But ya never know... lol) The State Christmas trees are very fun to look at. And they have a big fire pit set up so you can warm up if it's cold. :)

Something I hadn't thought of when I first asked.... since it will get dark before 5 p.m., is there anything to keep the kids entertained after dark?

if you have walked the mall...your kids will be too tired to be entertained at night! LOL!

The State Christmas tree's only light up at night (at least I have only ever been at night) you can also do a Candlelight Tour of the White House..but I am not sure of the dates..I know it is around Christmas time.

I dont know how old your kids are...but we have a Planet Hollywood and a Hard Rock if they are into that sort of thing. Other than that..I dont remeber being out real late as a kid downtown. Just for the Christmas and 4th of july festivities. hopefully others will know more.

Maybe that was a dumb question, after all since it will be COLD after dark (and maybe before dark, too!). In fact, I'm wondering if it will just be too cold for ME to do in general. Maybe I should look at another time of the year:confused:

It is just as cold as New Jersey..so if you cant stand being out where you live walking, you can take it here!
