We are planning to drive with our 2 grandchildren to Washington DC and need advise as to best location for lodging in July. I know that most hotels charge for parking but we would like something that is close to metro. Should I focus on Arlington or Alexandria area? Any Recommendations of hotels. Thanks.

When we went a couple years ago, we stayed in Springfield, VA at Comfort Inn. Free parking at hotel. They have a shuttle bus to the metro, a quick ride. The hotel was very nice and had a free breakfast. Have fun!

We are leaving for DC tomorrow and are staying at the Westin Alexandria. It was only $107 a night in Hotwire (I used better bidding and knew which hotel I was getting before purchasing). It is a couple blocks from the King St Metro station and has good reviews on Trip Advisor. I think either Arlington or Alexandria or even Crystal City are good areas as long as the hotel is close to the metro.

We have stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Crystal City. Easy walk to the Metro, lots of shops and restaurants around.

We went two years ago and stayed at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge. It's actually in Arlington but literally across the river from DC. About a block and a half walk to the metro station. They had free parking, free buffet breakfast, indoor pool. It was very nice, very convenient, and reasonably priced.

Arlington is usually pretty close to a metro stop
In Alexandria I would stay in old town
I wouldn't stay farther out than alexandria unless you are prepared for more than a 30 minute drive into the city
(I live in the dc area)

Any hotels in Crystal City should offer very easy and quick access to the Crystal City Metro station. We stayed at the Capitol View Residence Inn, and they had regular free shuttle service to and from the metro station. I know many of the surrounding hotels do as well. :) it's a good walkable location and very close to DC!

Crystal City has multiple hotels, many with shuttle or close enough to walk. We like the Hampton, very easy walk to metro stop

We stayed at the Springhill Suites in Alexandria last summer for 4 days and were very, very happy there. It's not walking distance to the metro station but their shuttle service was excellent and it's less than 5 min to the metro by shuttle. The rooms were big and very new suite style. Free breakfast was excellent.

Overall we had an excellent experience!!

We stayed at the Residence Inn Pentagon City and it was really terrific. We paid $119 a night for a studio suite which had a King Size bed and double pull out sofa along with a mini kitchen that was great for snacks.

They have a wonderful breakfast buffet included. It is walking distance to the metro, Pentagon City Mall, Pentagon itself, a small supermarket and several restaurants. It was like two or three stops to the Mall where all the museums are.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip!

Check at the residence inn Arlington courthouse or Arlington Ballston. Both on orange line metro and very close to metro. Nice section of Arlington that is easily walkable to many restaurants and a whole foods market nearby. Reasonable price and free breakfast. We live in the suburbs of DC and use these two hotels frequently for overnight stays when going into events. Within DC, the marriott Washington/Georgetown is in a great location.
