Sean and I are planning an overnight trip to Washington, D.C. with two friends. We'd like to spend time at the Smithsonian and will be taking the train down there. Anyone know of good hotels in the area?

Nikki - I've stayed at the Grand Hyatt and the Marriott at Metro Center. Both are in the heart of DC. The Hyatt was on the Blue Line and the Marriott gave me access to the Blue, Red and Orange lines. Very easy to get around either by walking or by taking the Metro from either hotel.

I've also stayed at both the Marriott in Crystal City. The hotel was nice, but out of the way from everything.

Check out the Courtyard on F Street. I've never stayed there but have friends who have and liked it.

Does anyone know if the Roy Rogers is still open in Crystal City? Weekdays are more active (at least back in the 90s) in Crystal City. There a cute jewerly store down there and some cafes.

Pentagon City was one of my favorites to window shop, but we ate usually at Springfield and then go to the midnight movies.

I always recommend the Grand Hyatt Metro Center as well -- very nice hotel, very centrally located. It has gotten considerably more expensive since I last stayed there (about a year and a half ago)...but maybe you can find a good rate. I have also always wanted to stay at Hotel Felix in DuPont Circle. Nice neighborhood, though maybe not where you plan on spending your time. And again, not super cheap...but since most attractions in DC are free, I use that to justify spluring on the hotel.

Have fun!

Crystal City Marriott!!! Metro stop in the basement.

:thumbsup2 There are actually two Marriotts both connected to the Metro Station by an underground tunnel. I think the other is the Gateway Marriott.

The Gateway is a little further up the street. Still recommend the Crystal City Marriott.

Speaking of Marriotts, Val & I honeymooned at the JW Marriott on 14th street. We've returned there several times for anniversary trips. Not cheap, but sometimes the weekend rates are bearable. Its a fairly short walk to the mall and all the Smithsonian buildings, as well as the various monuments.

Hi Nikki
I've stayed at The Melrose (not far to the White House) and the Marriott near the convention center. Both very nice and both came up on Priceline at the times we were visiting. I think hotels in the city can be cheaper on the weekends because all the business clientele go home. Its been a while since we've stayed overnight. The Melrose was quite swanky.

I love that JW Marriott. Beautiful hotel and you can't beat the location.

Check TripAdvisor for up-to-date reviews. We've also had luck using Priceline, going ****.

We have stayed at the Ritz Carlton at Pentagon City. It was very beautiful with traditional (style) furnishings and their signature great service. The location was perfect, too, with the Metro Pentagon City station right there on-site. There is a mall on-site, as well, with restaurants (AuBonPain-yum!) that are convenient for a quick breakfast before you venture out. Enjoy your trip!

Depends on what you have to spend. DC is a high rate city for hotels. I travel there often for work and have stayed in mostly Marriott chain hotels. There is on just off Dupont Circle near embassy row that is just a couple of blocks from the train station. I think it is only 3-4 stops to Mall. It was nice.

Also, the Court Yard in Silver Springs. Easy train access and a nice area.

Have fun and do not miss seeing the Mall and war memorials at night.

I've also stayed at the Grand Hyatt with the Metro Center subway station right under the hotel. Very convenient, nice hotel.

Luckily I have friends I stay with now but before I did I would usually stay in the Tyson's Corners area. There are really good deals that can be had over there at a couple of places. The Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn, Mariott, and Hilton often have rooms for under $100. The area is very nice and the orange line of the Metro is very convenient. We usually drove and parked in the lot at one of the stations (West Falls Church I think).

Just wondering what you decided Nikki.
