We have had our new Maytag washer just over a year now.... and while I know Dan mentioned earlier about the mold problems with the older models.... I thought ours was new enough that we shouldn't have to deal with that.

I think I was wrong!

Someone mentioned somewhere about a vinegar and bleach solution that you could run through the washer to eliminate the smell. I have tried every search word I can think of, and I can't find that post.

Any help would be appreciated!!! :)

Thanks for asking this. I've been having a musty smell in my Whirlpool washer for a while now. I'm going to try the tips in Dan's link and see what happens.

Thanks, Dan...... I will definitely give that a try!!!!

Hope this helps you too, grinningghost!! :)

Whirlpool told me to just run a HOT water load once in awhile, and that would take care of it. It does....for awhile.

I have a fairly new Maytag - about a year old. Does yours have the section in the middle where you put in liquid fabric softener?? If so, take that off and you may be shocked to see the built up scum inside the center column of the washer. I had to scrape off this stinky scum and keep pouring hot water over it to get it off. It was like stagnant fabric softener. Now I just pour mine directly into the rinse water and do not use the built in dispenser. If your is like that, I'd love to know.

No, mine is a front loader. I did what Dan found on the Maytag site and it helped.... I could not get all of the stuff off with the Fantastik, but the smell is definitely better. Now we'll just see how long it lasts!

I know what you mean about the fabric softener though.... I just use sheets in the dryer because there is no way I can catch each load at the right time to add liquid. :(

We just had the Maytag man here to fix our washer and he recommened using 1 cup of powder dishwasher detergent that has lemon in it with hot water using the heavy stains cycle. He says that it breaks down all the soap and fabric softner that is stuck in the washer. I had been using the bleach through it but it really didn't work anymore. I hope this helps
