DH sent me a text that our washer died. It was a LG front loader, about 10 years old and I have hated it because it would shake terribly and had a bad odor so had to leave the door open all the time. I would like some recommendations. What kind do you have that you think is a really good one? I don't want to make another mistake. I am thinking about a top loader this time. Any suggestions? TIA

Donna

Is your laundry room on the second floor? If so there are certain front loaders which work better than others because they have technology to stop the machine from vibrating.

And I'm not going to be much help. I swear by my LG front loader. Never had an issue with smell (it's wiped down and the door and detergent tray are left open when not in use) and it doesn't vibrate on the 2nd floor. Mine is 7.5 years old and when it dies it will be replaced with a younger version of itself.

The smell comes from it being sealed off when the door closes. The moisture doesn't evaporate and causes mold and mildew to grow inside the machine. You have to leave the door ajar so the water has a chance to evaporate.

Top loads don't suffer from this problem because the door doesn't seal air tight.

Any machine is going to vibrate if not properly leveled and balanced. Make sure all 4 feet come in contact with the floor.

OP here. The washer is on a platform that we purchased with it so it sets higher which means it is not setting directly on the floor. The door is left open always to air out and it is cleaned periodically.

I went to Lowe's a few years ago and bought the cheapest one they had. I have never been happier with a washer

Last time I went shopping for a washer was 2 years ago. In the area I lived in, many would go to this local appliance store because the sales people were so knowledgeable. At that time, they highly recommended Maytag.

Mine are on pedestals too. But unless they are on a slab, they will vibrate if they don't have anti-vibration technology.

You have the best there is, sorry you didn't like it.

Ours died recently, and ended up with Maytag Bravos. Love them ! Can easily fit all king size bedding in them, with room to spare. It's a top loading machine, with no agitator in front. Super quiet, fabulously clean clothes, doesn't use much detergent.

Everyone that I've ever known that has a Speed Queen LOVES it.

I will be getting a Speed Queen when my old (32 years) Maytag stops running. It has never needed a repair in 32 years. It's still pristine. No rust and works well.

If newer Maytags were the same, I would buy another.

The only issue with Speed Queen around here is, only the appliance dealers with bad YELP ratings carry them.

I have a maytag front loader. I leave the door open when not in use so it does not get a smell. I also wipe the door and around the rubber with Lysol wipes and I use the afresh tabs.

Just bought new washer/dryer at lowes. Whirlpool, least expensive set they had. Love it!!!!

At Christmas this past year I purchased a Samsung set - top loading - from Lowe's. Love them. Replaced my Whirlpool front loaders. Was so happy to get rid of that smelly washer!!

Do you use anything like Tide HE Washer cleaner for the smell? We give a sample of this to every single client who owns a front loader.

Edit: As for the initial question - LG, Samsung, Whirlpool are all good brands when it comes to a washing machine. Places to buy, my #1 place is Costco for the 90 day exchange period if you don't like it.

I hate my cheap top loading "high efficiency" washer.
It uses so little water that the clothes never seem clean. I started pouring 4 cups of water on the clothes(for weight), adding the extra rinse cycle and all hot water. Not very efficient.

I hated the front loaders I will never buy one ever again. I love my LG top loader bought a couple of years ago and it is great.

If you use the "deep wash" setting or "bulky" setting, fills up with plenty of water
