We had our first visit to BWV and when we drove up they valet parked our car and took the luggage. I immediately checked in and went up to our room. We phoned for the luggage and waited and waited. Finally after 1/2 I went downstairs to collect the luggage myslef. The girl went in the back and came back with my luggage cart and a bellhop. I told the bellhop he wasn't necessary, but he insisted on accompanying me. I felt he was just accompanying me just for the tip. Anyways I did not tip. I did not feel they provided me with any service. My husband on the other hand was mortified that I did not tip. Was I a bad girl?

Louise

Louise,it kinda sounds like you checked in and went to your room without letting the bell captain know where to send the luggage. With just the vague details it sounded like an honest mistake. As for not tipping... is the bell boy who finally assisted really to blame for what happened earlier or did he just catch your wrath ??

Without going into detail, bell services at both OKW and BWV leave a lot to be desired. We have had too many problems on multiple visits to consider our incidents isolated.

I don't think that you were "bad." If they took your bags, you rightly assumed that you were going to be reunited with them within a reasonable period of time. I don't know when you checked in or how busy it was, but I would probably have gone looking for them before you did. That having been said, (as I usually travel with multiple bags due to family obligations), I normally wave off the valets and do it myself unless it is at a hotel/resort that I know can be counted on to immediately get them to my room.

From my perspective I don't think you were bad. It is your luggage and you have a right to take it to your room by yourself if you choose. I for one hate it when a bell person somewhere assumes I'm somehow too feeble to manage my own luggage after I've stated I want to take it myself.

I agree, Louise, your post says that you called for your luggage. I've called them and they can see your room number and they've verified it for me. They should have brought it or told you that there would be a delay. When the bellman insisted on accompanying you despite your protest, they weren't providing a requested service. I probably would have tipped anyway and felt snookered. :( I don't blame you for declining to give one. JMHO.

We drove to BWV's and had tons of stuff along w/ groceries for our 1 bdrm. When I tried to request a luggage cart I was told NO, that they would unload it. It was pouring rain out and my husband had our dd who is 3 while I checked in. I was extremely worried that they would not get everything we needed ie; diapers in backseat, dd's toys and "little people" etc. We even had a small combo tv/vcr in the back of the van. He not only brought everything to our villa including the dd's video tapes. He was wonderful but soaked to the bone. I felt soooo bad. Needless to say he got a BIG tip, but in your case I would've made someone pay ME for having to wait that long ;)

When you wish upon a star...DVC will take you far...anything your heart desires....will come your way

As for the Bell-hop going with you. I didn't see if you said you brought the luggage cart up with you to the room, if you did, I would guess he went with you to bring the luggage cart back down to the lobby. I don't think I've seen an unattended cart in any of the halls before. As for tipping the bell-hop, That's your own decision. No one should tell you to tip or not, it's your decision. I would have tipped, but that's me. On vacation, I usually tip people you're not supposed to tip, and my wife says I overtip the ones your supposed to.
Most of the time the bellhops do a great job. That one bellhop probably just came down from dropping off someone else's luggage, and didn't know what he walked into. It may be Hotel policy to accompany the cart. If no cart was involved, I don't know why he would walk you up.
When the valet lost my car for over an hour and a half, and we lost our dinner resv., I didn't tip.

I don't think you made a bad decision.

Interesting comments that BWV's doesn't allow their members to use luggage carts to get their luggage up to their rooms. I like the carts they have available at HH. I think it would be nice to have some carts available to member use, for those folks who what to bring up their luggage themselves. What happens at OKW?? We've always had a car and never had to leave our luggage at OKW with the valet..but we have at BWV and haven't had any problems getting it delivered to the room promptly.

Have a wonderful day!

I do not think that you were out of line. But you would probably not been allowed usuage of the luggage rack without bell services being involved.

...why take it out on him?

As others have said, he was probably required to stay with the cart. If he didn't go with you, he would have had to tell you to leave the cart. Given that you were upset (and rightly so), he made the right choice.

His job is to accompany people to their rooms, so I don't think its fair to say he only insisted on doing it to get a tip.

Just my humble opinion, but I think you were understandably upset, but took it out on the wrong person. Perhaps the better way to handle it would have been to tip the gentleman, then call management to complain that your bags were not brought up in a timely manner (noting that the bellhop who did bring them up did his job).

I dodn't know about BWV, but at one of our stays at OKW we had to wait a while for luggage pick up when we were leaving. The bellhop told us that the DVC had cut back the number of bellhops as a cost saving measure. If this is true than it is not the bellhops fault that your luggage is delayed getting to the room.

You did right. I would have done the same thing. A "tip" is something to be payed when you get good to extraordinary service. Whenever I don't get satisfactory service, and when I actually get rude service, I make a point of talking to the manager, not leaving a tip, and leaving something in writing. It has never happened in WDW, but it has in other places. Don't feel bad. As it is today, value is placed strongly on "added value", and, in Disney's case, service is one of the major components ot that added value. They should be more careful and, by not giving a tip, you made a point.
