OK--I think after reading all the good reviews so far here on the new Kindle Fire that I may go ahead and get one for DD for xmas. She just got a regular kindle for her birthday in August and really loves it! We wanted to get her an ipad but with price that's not happening so with the features the Fire has this seems to be a good alternative for both reading and other things that a tablet could do.

My big question is what about the warranty that amazon has listed as an option for it?

Has anyone here purchased it for a Kindle in the past and is it worth it?

For the Kindle we got her in August we purchased it at ToysRUs and I declined their offer of an additional warranty and so far we haven't had any problems. DD is very responsible and has never broken anything electronic so no worries there but what about other issues? Is it worth I think an extra $45 or so or should I just consider it another ploy to get more money from me??

If I purchase it directly through Amazon website what standard warranty comes with the Kindle Fire to begin with and is that enough?
---How is their customer service on things like this if something malfunctions?

I figure with the free shipping just ordering it directly from them would be better than going out to the stores to find one right now and I'm beginning to worry if they will have enough for Xmas so maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it now.

Thanks for the input!!:)

Also, if she doesn't open it until Xmas--when does the regular warranty start??

The day she sets it up or from the day I actually order it?

I guess that would make a big difference.

Thanks all:goodvibes

The warranty will start the day your order ships. From my experience in the past, they have a 2 year warranty or the standard 1 year warranty. They run at the same time, so if you shell out for the two year warranty you'll only get two years worth of warranty. My experience with just the one year warranty (and a kindle 2!) has been fabulous. Dh and I both have kindle 2's. Mine had a minor, minor problem and they sent me a new one and offered me free shipping to send the first one back. This was shortly after receiving it. Dh's kindle had the little toggle on it break (I hate that thing!) after more than two years of ownership. I called just to see if they could give me a price break or anything on a new kindle and they sent a brand new kindle, again, even though this one was totally and far out of warranty. I do know he took our Amazon history into account on it (we um... shop there a bit! And had about 300 books purchased), but still above and beyond as far as customer service goes. And they overnighted it :cool1:

The one catch I've heard people running into is that technically they're not supposed to replace it if you have a one year warranty and you cause the damage. Only the two year warranty replaces damage *you* cause (like you know spilling a whole cup of coffee on the kindle) and it only replaces it one time. But if you're family is generally good with electronics I'd say you don't really need it.

I recommend square trade warranties. Thet cover accidental damage as well. You need to buy it as soon as you buy the kindle, though.

So I should go with the 1 year warranty or none at all?

How much does square trade warranty's cost?

Thanks:confused3

The Square Trade 2 year warranty is $44.99 on Amazon, and it appears that you have up to 30 days after the purchase to add it:

Technical Details
Accidental damage coverage starts on day 1 and lasts for 2 years from your Kindle purchase date (for pre-orders, accidental damage coverage starts after your device ships)
Extends mechanical and electrical breakdown coverage to the 2nd year of ownership
NO DEDUCTIBLES or fees for any claims made on your Kindle
Make up to 3 claims during the term of your warranty
Available for Kindles purchased on Amazon.com or from offline retailers within the last 30 days

FYI, you can also go directly to the Square Trade website to purchase a warranty. Google online for a coupon code first...there's almost always a 20% code floating around.

Just my opinion, I would only buy a warranty if you're worried about accidental damage (dropping, spilling a drink, etc).

Thanks again everyone!

I guess we'll forgo the warranty--DD's current Kindle is in good shape---she takes good care of her electronics.

Thanks to another post here I guess will be purchasing today for the best price---Amazon is offering $10 off if purchased with MC and then you get another $10 in credit for future use!! Probably the best deal since these won't be on sale at all---I'm so glad I check here often. Hope some others can get in on the deal. ;)
