Warning: Movie Despereaux

My DS7 was disappointed that Miggery didn't cut Depereaux's tail off like she did in the book.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

It would have been nice to have the back story on Miggery worked into the movie a bit more. My 11 year-old nephew wanted to know what was the deal with her hearing. His 9 year-old sister had a few questions about the plot as well.

I didn't give them too many details. I've decided to give each of them a copy of the book the book for Valentine's Day.

I'll give them the movie for Easter.

Good to know. I will not be wasting $50 at the movies to see Desperaux. Looks like we will definately going to Bedtime Stories.

I know that even in my close circle of friends we have different opinions as to what is an "ok" movie for our families so I thought I would pass on a site that I get reviews from. It is called pluggedinonline.com and it will break down the different elements of a movie - positive elements, negative elements, violence, sexual content, etc. Hope this helps someone. :goodvibes

I just looked at that site...and found something pretty funny.

"As I watched, I thought about how much Disney movies have changed since I grew up watching them."

The reviewer apparently found some of "Bedtime Stories" offensive. I didn't see thee movie (yet) so I can't comment, but to compare it to Disney movies of the past......ummm...didn't Cruella Deville want to make coats out of puppies? And what about Bambi's mother? Oh yeah - those were much tamer times. :rotfl:

We took our three kids (4, 6 & 8) to see Desperaux last weekend. My kids are easily frightened and none of them had a problem watching the movie. DD (4) was tired and ended up falling asleep during the middle of it. I think they liked it OK, but it definitely wasn't the best kids movie we have ever watched. I was really suprised to log on here and see that many people feel like it isn't appropriate for kids. I am fairly protective and I did not find it offensive or even that scary.

I hadn't considered taking the kids to the Bedtime Stories movie because of the PG-13 rating. From what I am reading though, it sounds like it could be appropriate for them (they would be oblivious to any innuendos if the movie has any). My kids absolutely love Night at the Museum, so if Bedtime Stories is anything like that movie I probably should take them to see it.

FYI - Bedtime Stories is PG.

Was the site talking about Desperaux? Because it is not a Disney movie. So the website reviewer was incorrect.

We took the family to see Despereax yesterday and we all liked it. There were some scary scenes but nothing our kids could not handle. Of course, you could find some scary images or offensive scenes in most movies, including the classic Disney films.

Oh gosh... I feel like the worst mother in the world. I took our DD who will be 3 in Feb to see it and she loved it.:confused3

My girls read the book as part of a school-sponsored bookclub, and donut discussion group. I believe most nearly the whole school read it. They are 1st grade (age 7) and 3rd grade. Both enjoyed the book and can't wait to see the movie.

I guess my suggestion is to read the book first... so you know what you are getting into with the movie. I myself, have no "issues" with the book, so I will feel comfortable taking them to the movie.

Thanks for the warning! I think it will be a wait till it comes out on dvd so we can turn it off if need be movie. My dd 6 takes some scary things in stride, and others can give her nightmares, so it's better safe than sorry!

Interesting..... I go to adoption .com and they have the same thread going over there. Sounds like many parents have had some issues with this movie.

We saw this movie and it was cute. The christian radio station near us even gave it 4 out of 5 stars for family friendliness.

Not too much to add, but simply to agree with the people who didn't really like Despereaux. I took DD who is 3.5 years--she was ansy after the first hour; and I just thought that the themes of the movie were too abstract for her to get at all. It did seem dark and humorless to me---that was my exact feeling about it when I walked out. DD didn't seem to mind, but like I said, it lost her attention unless the princess and/or the mouse was on the screen.

:confused3 I don't get the big deal. Life can be scary and unless you're going to stick a paper bag over your kids head for the rest of his/her life, they need to learn how to cope with the scary things too.

I understand that there are bad things in this world, I just don't see the point in purposely exposing my children to them. I don't like paying $50 to take my children to a movie that is COMPLETELY age-inappropriate. If the movie was rated PG, which I think it should be, I would have researched why it was rated PG. But instead, it was rated G, General, a great movie for anyone. All the previews show a cute little mouse, and how he doesn't fit in with the other mice. That was about 15 minutes of the movie. The dark side of the movie was not advertised.
My DD6 is terribly afraid of darkness, of loud noises, of scary things. (but for some reason LOVES ToT!) As I said, I don't see the point in purposely exposing her to things that scare her. I had to explain to her why the cute mouse's parents wanted to kill him. I had to explain why the rats wanted to eat the mouse, and the princess.
If the previews had shown a little more of what the movie was actually about, we would have done something else for her birthday, instead of taking her to a movie that she spent half of it curled up in the back of the seat with her hands over her ears!

DS9 saw the movie with my mom yesterday. He was so disappointed in it; he said the book is so much better.

I saw it today and thought it was charming. Scare factor similar to Pinochoccio - less stressful than Bambi.

Brought my girls to see it on Tuesday. They are 13 and 5. They both loved it and usually my 5 year old is scared of such things. She loved it. I just asker her if the movie was scary and she told me no, it was silly!

I thought it a little boring and from what my 13 dd remembered from the book (she read it years ago) it didn't follow the book to well. It isn't a disney movie so I took it like that!

We also saw Bolt and loved that. So much btter than the above movie and Wall=E. A great movie.

My dh and I are going to see Marley and Me. I won't be taking kids to see that.

We are also lucky. The AMc theater over here charges $5 for adults and children all week and during the day on Sat an Sun! So it doensn't cost too much to see a movie!
