I am new here, but a long time WDW veteran. I posted this on another Disney board and thought it would be good to post it here as well. As an FYI, I am a Georgia resident and drive down to WDW 2-3 times per year.

This is for anyone that is planning on driving down I-75 through Georgia on their way to Florida. Be very careful of your speed while in Georgia. Pay close attention to speed limit changes. I-75 through Georgia is heavily patrolled for speeding both by the GSP (Georgia State Patrol) and local law enforcement. Many counties in Georgia use traffic violations to provide additional revenue to their county. As such they aggressively enforce speed limits and impose heavy fines on those they ticket. Most speed enforcement on Georgia interstates is done with laser. Even if you have a top of the line radar/laser detector, you will get no warning until its too late.

One area that is particularly bad is Tift County in south Georgia. They are notorious for running multiple traps on I-75 around the city of Tifton. They can and will write you up for going faster than you were actually going. Possibly from error, but more likely to impose heavier fines. If you are going over 80 mph, don't be surprised to get a ticket for going 90. The fine in Tift county for going 89 mph is $245. But the fine for 90 mph (just 1 mph faster) is $700! If that isn't bad enough, starting in January Georgia will be imposing a "super speeder" fine of an additional $200 if you are ticketed for going 85 mph or more. So you could easily end up with a $900 ticket for going 85 mph.

I know some of you reading this will think, "just don't speed and you will be fine". This is true but the reality is that most of us speed. If for no other reason than to keep pace with the traffic. In addition, if you are like me and want to travel down long stretches of interstate on cruise control without having to frequently alter speed and change lanes (either to get around slower vehicles or to allow faster vehicles to pass), you will find yourself in the left lane going 10-15 mph over the speed limit. Don't let this happen. Its very easy to do even if you aren't in a hurry. But it will eventually get you a ticket with a hefty fine. It did me.

I am not suggesting anyone break any traffic laws. But I will tell you (based on Georgia traffic laws and my own experience living in Georgia) most Georgia law enforcement agencies will not bother with you if you are going no more than 9 mph over the speed limit unless you are in a school or work zone.

So please watch your speed. Particularly around Tifton, GA.

WOW!!! Go GSP!!! I hope that you do get a $900 ticket for going more than 85 MPH. There is absolutely no reason to be going that fast...EVER. Sure, go 80...which is faster than I'll ever drive...but anything more than that and you are asking to get both yourself and others killed. Let me know next time you're driving down to WDW so that I can make sure that I'm off the roads.

Thanks twood0711:thumbsup2. What most people don't realize is that going slower than prevailing traffic can be just as dangerous as going fast especially around tractor trailers who cannot slow down on the spot. marius97 I would remind you that it is illegal for cops to falsify documents. They are supposed to be fair and not jack up fines for their conveniece. If somone is reckless fine. But I hate Georgia for driving. When I was there in May two cops were chacing a motocycle and crashed into each other!!!! Shut down 95 for hours. Maybe they should have been a little less focused on the ticket and more focused on their driving.
Evey time I have driven through georgia over the past 22 years it there has been a cop hinding at the state line. I even remember my parents complaining about it when I was a kid. As a kid I went cross country camping for several weeks. There was not a single state in all that travel that liked tickets like Georgia does. Not even Virginia and they are bad too!

Wow, what a warm welcome to Disboards!

Marius, you really should read people's posts more carefully before issuing your "holier-than-thou" judgments. You just make yourself look like a self-righteous fool. I think its clear that my post was meant to encourage people to drive SLOWER, not faster.

Whenever my family and I have went down I-75 we always noticed a lot more police cars looking for cars that are speeding around Valdosta, Georgia to the Florida state line.

No your post was meant to tell people to slow down so they don't get a huge ticket/fine...not so that they don't kill someone. I do take offense when someone takes my life in their hands. And no driving 85 mph will never be just "going with the flow." You may be a the top end of the flow, but you will certainly be flying by the flow pretty quickly.

And on the other note...if cops are increasing your actual speed by a MPH or two to get a bigger ticket, than that is despicable and I hope they get caught doing that (though that is not likely.)

Just drove through GA on 75 each of the past 2 weekends. I would put the "flow" as somewhere between 75 and 80. There were plenty of people at 85+, it was the ones going 60 in the middle lane that were the hazard.

The only cop seen running radar in 1700 miles was around Ocala, FL. Another officer passed me at about 90 mph in the 50 mph never ending construction in southern GA.

My surprise continues to be Atlanta. The speed limit is 55, nobody was even close to that. I was getting passed on both sides at 75.

Also, as someone else mentioned, if you're coming through Virginia be *very* careful, especially on I-95 between DC and Richmond. I travelled that stretch several times a month or two ago and always saw the same unmarked police-cars, usually they're hefty sportscar-types, like Dodge Chargers.

Also saw a group of unmarked cars on different trips on I-85 between Richmond/Petersburg & McKenney. (I-85 runs between Raleigh/Durham and Richmond.)

agnes!
