Wow, what a scary afternoon I had today. We didn't eat lunch because we weren't hungry so about 3:30-4ish we get in the line for Peter Pan, it's a 65 minute wait, well about 3/4's of the way through I start to feel sick to my stomach, it's hot so I pass it off as just that. Then my eyes clouded over, my knees gave out and I am told I blurted out " I think I'm going to pass out", next thing I knew I was going in and out of conciousness. I was able to muster enough strength to get out of the line (mind you it was by crawling under the rope...lol) and to a bench before passing out again. The whole way to the bench I was having greyed out vision and no hearing (just muffled noises). SCARY! I was woken up and felt better after the soda cart worker handed my aunt a wash cloth full of ice and some water for me to drink.
Moral of the story is this, if your coming to Disney or doing any other activity take this advice I wish I would have followed drink tons and tons of water (not soda, slush, etc full of sugar), eat small frequent meals and try to stay cool, fan, mister, etc.
I can only imagine what would have happened had I not made it to the bench and collapsed there in the line or worse yet on a ride or on the street in the crowd.
Be careful!! ::yes::

How frightening! :scared: Yes, you really were lucky to have safely made it to a bench and not passed out in another place. Did you continue on with your Disney fun or call it a day?

Oh my that is frightening. I always carry a water bottle with me. Knowing how important it is to stay hydraded. Hopefully, your family got you inside a nice AC building to lower you body temp and get you plenty of liquids. I also started doing something I never have before, and that was wearing a hat. Signs of old age here. But better safe than sorry. Hopefully this did not spoil your whole day.

The same thing happened to me in May. Good advice for everyone and I am glad you are feeling better.:)

Also, make sure you eat enough and you are rested. ;)

That has happened to me also and it is really really frightening. I now use a hydration backpack. It is a constant reminder to drink. Remember, if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Dehydration can happen quicker than you think and real problems like fainting can come up in minutes and you might not be in a place to care for yourself like the original poster was. Take care everybody and stay hydrated!

Linda

I'm always afraid that is going to happen to me. That's why I almost always go in December now. Of course, it gets cold, but at least it isn't likely to get overbearingly hot.

Staying hydrated in the heat is so important! Glad you are okay!

I'm sorry that it happened, but very glad you are ok now! Wild Adventures, a amusment park about 45 mins away, had a HUGE concert two or three weekends ago. They have a concert every sat. night, but it was David Crowter, Micheal W. Smith and Mercy Me (three VERY big Christian artist/groups). The heat was unbareable! There were people dropping like flies litteraly! One of the girls from our youth group that went (lots of church groups there) got too hot and an adult and I went to the first aid center just to get her some ice packs or something to cool her off, and the guy told us to go outside and he jumped on the golf cart type thing off to pick her up, on the way he got a call saying someone had passed out in line and was now have seizures! It was a CRAZY day! Volunteer firefighters from the surrounding counties came and many ambulances. The park ran out of bottled water!! They also admitted to not having enough shaded areas or water fountians. They said they hoped to have every problem fixed by the time there was any other type of very popluar concert.
I'd been at band camp the week before, so I was almost used to the heat, but we had some kids passing out at camp too!I learned my lesson of always drinking water even if I didnt like the taste of it! (I'm very particular of the taste of my water!!) I hope everyone remembers to stay hydrated!!!

I'm am lucky because I can't drink Diet Coke or Coke so I drink lots of water when I am at WDW and so far haven't had a problem. Caffeine and sugar tend to dehydrate you and most people won't drink water but do drink sodas. Worse thing you can do!
Normally I take a big Tupperware cup and fill it with ice and water before I head for the parks and then keep refilling during the day.
Also wear a hat and look for shade. DH is good at that.

Happy to hear you are OK now. That Florida summer heat is a killer. We always have to take our WDW trips in summer because of DD's school schedule, and I've learned my lesson well. Water, water, water and more water - and lots of snacks.::yes::

I competle understand where coming. I work at baseball park in the summer and one of my responsabite as concession stand manager is for every in my stand drinks plenty of water. Dehyrate is a huge problem at the baseball park people drop like flies there.

I hope feel better soon.

Remember every its summer drink plenty of water.

Very scary! I hope you are feeling much better now. That southern heat and humidity can really take a toll. Lesson learned...I promise to drinks lots and lots of water when I'm in the heat, from this day forward.

Although I'm sorry for what happened, I'm so glad to see this post. People don't realize how very serious dehydration is. I've passed out 3 times over the years from what later turned out to be "Just" dehydration. The last time it took several MRIs, spinal tap, EEG, to fully diagnose it. Please drink your water!

And it can be deadly, more-so if aggravated with other medical conditions. Stay hydrated.

Back in June when I was there, I was walking from the Hat area in MGM, over to where they are building the Stunt Show, at the end of the New York Street. I wanted to get some pictures. While walking down the NYC street, which was pretty deserted, I could feel woozy. I stopped, headed back to the book store next to Sci-Fi to cool off. And I had water and was constantly drinking it all the time there, plus a Misty Mate. That sun can be overwhelming.

Glad all turned out okay.

Very good advice. I know what a horrible experience that can be. I was actually "lucky" enough to become dehydrated at home (in RI) last August, before our trip to Florida. I'm glad it happened then, as a warning, before going to Florida with just my kids.

Darlene ~

So glad to hear that you are feeling better. You have given excellent advice about what to do in the Florida heat.

I'm very fair skinned and really don't care that much for water, would much rather have a diet soda than water. Whilst in AK last October I started to feel really ill, woozy and really out of sorts. We found a shaded area and I literally drank a full bottle of water then and there.

It is so important to stay hydrated.

A similar thing happened to my friend last year when we went to WDW. He had to stay in his room for 2 days as he felt so bad. It also happened to my friend here in England. She was in the wedding shop having her wedding dress altered and she said she felt funny. Next thing she knew she was in the ambulance with her wedding dress undone and the hoop bit near her head!! She laughs about it now but not at the time!!

Glad you survived your ordeal with dehydration. I let myself get dehydrated a couple of summers ago and it was not a pretty picture. It really ruined the whole day for me.

An early sign of dehydration is that your lips and mouth feel dry. When that happens, it's a good idea to find some water and some shade. If you let it progress too far, you may find yourself with a FastPass to the urgent care center.

Glad you're ok. Heat related problems can get worse so quickly.
There was a teenager from my town who died back about 6 years ago. He was mowing the lawn on one of those 90 degree/98% humidity days, got dehydrated and never got water into his system or cooled off until someone had found him unconcious and by then it was too late.

Kind of gross - but you also need to pay attention to the color of your urine output. If it is dark yellow and has an odor then you need to drink more. It should be the color of light lemonade:) . It's kind of funny because my DD will yell to me from the stall - I'm making lemonade Mom so I'm OKAY!
