warm milk on the plane

I would stop warming the milk. If he is on table foods he will not starve, and he will eventually adapt to cold milk if that is all that is offered. As for the 7 hour flight, he can make it without milk if he is eating other foods. I would not be trying to warm a bottle on a plane.

Ok here's an idea from the tough love pages of parenting. Stop warming the milk. If he doesn't like it, he won't drink it, but if he's thirsty enough, he will drink it and get used to it. Start this now, so that by the time you're on the plane, he will drink what you have available.

:thumbsup2

You have plenty of time (3 weeks) to get him used to not drinking warm milk. DS took everything room temperature or colder exactly for issues like this. He was the most portable baby ever! I wouldn't even bother doing a gradual switch....it is usually us parents who fret more than the kids about stuff like this ;) When they are thirsty, they will drink what is offered....just give them some time!

Also, if he is on solids he really doesn't need that much milk! If they get thirsty they will drink other things. DS to this day (he is 4) only drinks milk, water and water with a splash of juice. We call them baby spritzers :lmao:

Gerber makes "milk drinks" that can be stored at room temperature. They come in a "juice box" type container I think and are sold in the baby aisle at the store. Or I think it's Beech Nut that makes yogurt drinks for toddlers. You might have success with those if you haven't tried them already.

With that being said, I would try to get him used to the cold milk before your trip as well, simply because I think it would be more of a hassle to try to get the milk warmed up at the parks for your whole trip every time he wants something to drink. You'll have to constantly be stopping somewhere to ask someone for a cup and some warm water, or hunting down the baby care center to warm it yourself. That's just more work than I'm willing to do on vacation :)

I do feel your pain though. It took me forever to transition DD#1 to any kind of milk. What finally worked was putting it in a cup instead of a bottle. We never put formula in a cup and we never put milk in a bottle. That way, she didn't necessary "expect" it to taste a certain way, KWIM?

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies! We have 3 weeks until we leave, I will try making it cooler and cooler for him! He only just turned 1, and weaning him to milk was a HUGE challenge- he wouldn't take it at all, so I needed to warm it to keep it as close to his formula bottle as I could. Yes- he's on solids, and he eats the baby food, etc, but we have a 7 hour flight- and he never goes that long without a milk bottle and is usually the ticket to getting him to fall asleep. Thanks again!:)

Are you in Puyallup WA??? Just wondering because I am in WA too and our flight to DW wasn't 7 hours....are you remembering to figure in the time change? Thought I would mention it just in case :)

Hi Lori!

Yes- I'm in Puyallup- where are you at in WA? Small world! We are not flying straight through- according to SW- our fight is just shy of 7 hours and over 7 hours on the way home. I believe it factors in a 25 minute lay over in Denver, not quite sure though- but we don't switch planes and we cannot get off. What airline did you fly?

More great ideas! I didn't know about the other "milk" options available, I may have to pick those items up just in case I need it at some point on the trip!
He's my youngest of four, and I was just doing what I had done for the older 3- but he's very picky! I just don't want a fussy baby on the plane, and I think the other passengers will be appreciative of that too! lol I can't get him to drink out of a sippy cup! I never had this problem with my older kids- and it took him a while to eat baby food too! He only wanted his bottle- and my older kids LOVED their food. He's just cut from a different cloth I guess! :-) He transitioned to food finally- and finally transitioned to milk although he dislikes it so much, he rarely drinks a half a bottle anymore- but it does trigger his sleepy time routine which is why I am so concerned about the flight! I'm sure it will all work out just fine! Thanks again for all the suggestions!!:flower3:

Oh - Ok - we fly non-stop on Alaska Air! We are not too far from you in the Tacoma area....

I understand your concern. I had a horror story when we flew with my 15 month old. He got so tired on the flight and wouldn't take his cold milk. The fa offered him crayons. Anyway, I figured out that if you don't mind diluting the milk a little you can use 6 oz milk and then ask for hot water for tea. Just pour in until you get the right temp. Depends on how cold the milk is but it should bring it up to a good temp before you get to the top of the bottle. When they are flying, away from home, and around a lot of people in a loud cabin they just want their milk the way they like it to settle down. After my trick he drank his bottle, fell asleep and slept for hours. Unfortunately I didn't figure this out until the last half hour of the flight. We use this trick a lot when we are traveling. It is easy and at that age it doesn't matter that the milk is a little diluted. You could try it out at home first so you know that it will work.

Do your best to transition him to the cool milk! I had a brestfed baby who refused to drink cold milk and what PITA that was!!
She was #2 and #1 didn't care. When #3 came along I made sure she got used to cold milk!!

We travelled to Orlando from the UK with our son when he was 9 months old. We flew with Virgin atlantic. They were happy to warm the milk for us. It is really difficult taking a baby on a long haul flight, without changing they're routines with only 3 weeks to go. Try calling your airline to ask if they have a policy on this. Have a wonderful trip.
