This is a main component for my breakfast and I want to make sure I have it with me when we are on vacation. Problem is that the can I buy is huge and I don't want to pack the whole can with me. Is it okay to pack a smaller amount of this in a tupperware or ziploc container? Wondering if it is an issue since it will be an off white powder that does not have commercial labeling.

well if it was me i would buy amount presealed and smaller for just enough to take with me or you can ship it to your hotel..... but if you do the baggie think please tell us how much fun the airport has with that...

depending on your brand - some come prepacked in 1 size servings. Otherwise - maybe do the opposite where you bring your desired amount the canister (in your bags) with you and store the other half at home in tupperware. This way it's labeled in the canister. When your done with the canister amount in FL you can throw it away before packing to go back home. Otherwise...if you have transportation - we go by a Whole Foods (or where ever you locate your product) and bring it to the hotel.

I bring all of my supplements with me when I travel. I almost never check my bags, so they all pass through the x-ray. I bring along whey protein, glutamine, creatine, my fish oil pills, vitamins, oatmeal, protein bars, and other various snacks I will need. Not once have I been stopped and searched because of the supplements. The one time I did check my bag, I also did not have a problem.

I just put them into labelled ziplocks bag and seal them into a large tupperware.

I also travel often and I bring all sorts of supplements along with me. Protein, glutamine, creatine, and other various pills and powders. I too just pop them in zip-lock bags along with their scoopers. I also double-bag them in case one bag tears. I am sure you will be fine either checking or carrying-on. I have done both many times and never have had an issue. Good-Luck

TSA is NOT the DEA. They care about things that can pose a danger to travelers they are not mandated to worry about you carrying other contraband.

Assuming you are not traveling over an international border (even then your issue is not the TSA), it will be fine. It may cause them to open your bag (as it may look funny on an x-ray), but that is all.

I had powdered fiber supplement in a zip-lock bag in my checked bag. No problem BOS-MCO. When I got home it was all over the inside of my suitcase, it had been opened. We returned from MCO in September a few days after the terrorist threat occured.

TSA is NOT the DEA.

....But local law enfocement is usually stationed near a checkpoint. From the TSA website (http://www.tsa.gov/weekly/062209.shtm#news1)

TSA Officers Use Technology to Detect Illegal Drugs
From the Office of Strategic Communications/Public Affairs

Three passengers traveling from Los Angeles International Airport to Kahului, Hawaii, were arrested June 3 after one of the individuals was caught carrying illegal drugs through checkpoint screening.

The first passenger was randomly selected for millimeter wave screening by TSO Tressemme Hackney. TSO Larry Patterson detected contraband and recommended the passenger receive a pat-down. When the passenger was patted down, TSO Brian Real discovered one pound of methamphetamine in the man's buttocks area, at which point Supervisory TSO Thomas Twitchell and Lead TSO Michael Coleman contacted airport police.

The man told airport police that two other passengers he was traveling with were also carrying iilegal drugs. When questioned by law enforcement, the two traveling companions, still in the public area, admitted to that they too were carrying drugs – two pounds of methamphetamine.

The three men were arrested and charged with transport of methamphetamine for sale. The estimated street value of the drugs was approximately $100,000.

"Without whole body imaging, it is possible our protocols may not have found these drugs," said Los Angeles FSD Larry Fetters. "Though our job is to keep the airports safe and secure, today, our TSOs kept the streets safe too."

If the powder is found there may be a possibility of questioning about it because most states have laws against counterfeit controlled substances. I wouldn't package the powder into portions because then it looks like intent to distribute. Most white powder flies OUT of Florida so the OP has that going for him/her.

I travel weekly (or more) with ziplock baggies of vanilla and chocolate protein powder. Both in my carry-on and (when I have one) my checked bag. I have NEVER had the TSA single my supplements for 'further inspection' or anything of the sort. There isn't a single TSA directive or ban related to the transport of powdered substances of the entirely legal variety.

Enjoy your trip.

I just reread that you are transporting the protein powder in your checked baggage. Absolutely no issue whatsoever. None. Not even any maybes. Enjoy your trip.

Well, perhaps a slight correction is in order - that applies to flights in our parallel universe.

I've carried various powdered sports drink mix in Ziploc bags in checked and carryon bags. Not a problem, even with the one maltodextrin powder that is very fine and white.

I do recommend using good ziplocs, such as the freezer bags and not the thinner bags, and double bagging. I usually make packets of what I need, in quart size freezer bags, then put all the bags into a gallon freezer bag. Helps protect against a bag tearing open. The thinner bags are just asking to get a hole in them.

And the guy with his powder in his pants would have been just fine if he had been on a truly domestic flight and had had the stuff in his checked baggage rather than his pants. (While a Hawaii flight *is* legally domestic, baggage is subject to USDA inspection, and the dogs might have found it in that case.)

In and of itself, putting a baggie of powder in your luggage isn't suspicious. Hiding a baggie of powder in your pants is. :rolleyes1

OP, I'd just mark the baggie as to the content. Even if a LEO sees it they will read that and let it pass. (It's always a good idea to mark any container like that that is in transit; liquid or powder. If it spills and isn't labeled, they may waste resources calling out a hazmat team because they won't know what it is.)
