Hello to all you parents. :wave2: I'm new to this board & wanted to introduce myself. I'm 34 yo, & I love ::MickeyMo, WDW, & :worship: Walt, but not necesaarily in that order. DH & I just celebrated our 1 yr wedding anniversary. :love2: I'm a stay at home mom for our 2 children. DD (12yo) is T1 diabetic & has a pump. She was diagnosed in July of 2004. She received her pump in July 2005. I'm very lucky b/c she is such a trooper. She hardly ever complains & just does what she has to do to stay healthy. She has found many positives in this crappy situation. DS (3 mnths) is keeping me busy. I'd forgotten a lot, since DD was a baby. This little icon shows his mood lately. :furious: So glad to find this board & can't wait to get to know all of you.

On to my question: DD, DS, & I are headed to WDW for Mother's Day week. We haven't been to the world since she was diagnosed. She is doing insulin to carb ratio. We use the guess method a lot, so I'm not too worried about that. My main concern is adjusting her basal for activity. Any tips would be great. Also, can we refridge insulin in the first aid station? Also, if we are staying on property @ a Value, can I get a fridge for free, since its for a medical reason? Thanks in advance.

To all you parents of newly diagnosed children
Here's my TOP 10 list of the things I've learned about having a child with diabetes:
10) you don't have to know it all today
9) you CAN NOT kill your child by doing the wrong thing
8) you can do everything RIGHT and their #s will still be screwed up
7) everyone has advice, even if they don't know what the hell they are talking about (each diabetic is different & has different orders, medicine, and reactions)
6) your child is able to do more for themself then you think
5) excercise is our friend, not scary
4) just when you think its all figured out something WILL change
3) each bad situation is a good learning experience
2) you aren't alone
1) YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS. I promise. :cheer2:

Welcome to DIS! Thanks for the list. My DH was diagnosed with Type 2 earlier this month and we'll be taking our first trip since this September. Any and all advice is welcome.

I do believe you can get a fridge for free. It's best to call the resort to confirm and request one in your room upon your arrival.

hi,

On to my question: DD, DS, & I are headed to WDW for Mother's Day week. We haven't been to the world since she was diagnosed. She is doing insulin to carb ratio. We use the guess method a lot, so I'm not too worried about that. My main concern is adjusting her basal for activity. Any tips would be great. Also, can we refridge insulin in the first aid station? fridge is free if its for medical reasons and this is one of those reasons.Bring a dr's note, just in case proving she is on insulin and needs to have it keeped in fridge.I think you can leave insulin at first aid stations, but i am not 100 % sure. As For activity,if she is not a very active person walking around the hot sun all day in wdw might make your sugar or numbers thrown off a little. All that walking might cause your sugar to become a little low,Orange juice or oral gulcose(sold in a tube at most drug stores) will get it back up a little.Personnaly i think orange juice works faster and better.MAybe you can bring or carry a pint of juice with you there.Remember all are different,no 2 people with this problem are the same,so you might not have any problems at all.To get ready before you go,maybe short walks around the block where you live to get used to all the walking.Good luck and i hope i helped a little.BTW HAVE A BLAST AT DISNEY!!!

and just returned from an early April trip.

You can get a fridge free. Call ahead and tell them that it's for insulin so they know to reserve you one. Remind them at check-in.

You can keep insulin at the first-aid station. I know that you should carry "back-up" supplies (needles, insulin etc) in-case of pump malfunction so I assume that is your reasoning. I will admit that I don't do that.

I did and do always carry some candy lozenges with me incase of a low but didn't have too many issues at DW.

I also "guesstimate" my carb's with meals and tend to be right most of the time. It didn't take me long to figure out that pancakes and waffles were not my friend. I "splurge" now and then but usually have to double or triple the insulin and it's usually not worth it for me.

Best of luck. I know the pump was a lifesaver for me. A1C was 13 and now down to 6 in about 2 years.

You can store your insulin at the 1st aid station but since she is pumping I'm not sure I'd go to the bother of bringing the insulin with me to the parks. If she has a pump malfunction it is possible to use a syringe to draw up insulin out of the reservoir if you need to give a shot. This should give you more than enough time to return to the hotel for more supplies. They syringes you can just keep in your purse or other bag. A cab back to your on-site hotel would work in such an emergency and would be relatively quick.

I assume you already plan to carry extra supplies of syringes, long and short acting insulin, etc. with you to keep in the hotel. I usually do carry the supplies to change his set with me to the parks. We are much more likely to have a set malfunction than a pump malfunction.
