We will be staying in Windsor Hills in three weeks and my husband just discovered that the Mystic Dunes golf course is really close to where we are staying and expressed an interest in playing there.

He found their website and found out that the twilight rates in August are inexpensive.

He would like to hear some reviews about this course. Has anyone played it?

OK, get out your clubs, you will love Mystic Dunes...I work there as a starter and ranger in Jan, Feb and March...
MDunes is really fun with greens that have been modeled after Augusta by Gary Koch. Most of the greens will have 2 to 5 foot elevations changes that golfers love because it so different from local courses. In the winter the greens are kept medium speed as opposed to real fast as there are so many high handicap golfers that rounds would be 5 hours with 6 putts on some greens...

It is a unique course in the area...front 9 kind of Florida/Carolina, back nine is long straight and more dunesy/British...
It is a 7000+ course that plays to par 71 (only 3 par fives) so par 4's are long and tough...Play the white tees unless you are under a 10 handicap and can drive the ball 240 consistantly. TRUST ME...IT WILL BE MUCH MORE FUN!

Landing areas are pretty generous, but instead of tough rough, there is huge sand waste areas. The real fun of MDunes is hitting into these great greens and trying to 2 putt...

Enjoy...tell the starter tht Ted from Iowa says Hi...It might be one of my buddies.

The winter rate is $150 so enjoy the summer rates....If you want to do another beautiful course or two check out Celebration just down 192 east and Orange County National...just a 15 minute drive from you house.

Enjoy..."Golf is an easy game....it is just hard to play!

Ted

Thanks for the information! Actually your two suggested courses are both ones he played last year AND will be playing this year. Any other suggested courses?

(Well, maybe I shouldn't give him any more courses so that he will want to go to one of the parks with us!)

Here is couple of other ideas...

If you keep going south on Old Lake Wilson past MDunes and Indian Ridge you will come upon Reunion. This billion dollar developement is one of the top new golf communities in the world. It is really something to just drive by. There are 3 courses all signature form Watson, Palmer and Nicklaus.

Not sure if anyone can play them in the summer. In the winter they are limited to members and guests at the resort. You could tell them you are interested in a tour and ready to drop over a million for 4 bedroom home or 1/2 million for condo and they might let you play...I would call the club house and see if they have a summer special for non owners and guests...It is absolutely stunning golf.
If you go to past Reunion and turn right at the stop light it will be about 2 miles to Champions Gate. This is the David Ledbetter Academy...You just might see Michelle Wie or one of famous students on the practice tee.
CGate will definately have summer rates...2 courses, the National and the International...They will HOT as they are flat and few trees...I have heard the National is the better and little easier.

Not sure how far you want to drive or if you want to make it a full fun day and see a neat area while he golfs, one of our favorite golf courses is called Deer Island. It is about an hour drive north up by Mt. Dora. Mt. Dora is quaint little tourist town with lots of shops, small restaurants and a beautiful view of Lake Dora.

The golf course is on a island that was built to be a private club with very high end homes...well, that did not go so well because it was such a long drive to the grocery store so they are now public with more modest homes going in...This a a great Florida course with white sand, lots of water, and surrounded by Lake Dora. Lots and lots of big gators sitting out sunning and a really nice layout. Here is the website. http://www.deerislandgolf.com/

The drive takes you through horse country that few people visiting Florida get to see...

Finally, best deal could well be Southern Dunes in Haines City...

http://southerndunes.com/ This is a great links type layout with huge greens, great holes, and always in great shape.

Easy drive down Hwy 27 10 miles to Haines City...turn just as you hit town at the Wal Mart and big Southern Dunes sign. From Winsor Hills take the new I-429 to I-4 to 27 south...
From WHills turn Right...go past Mdunes and Indian Ridge and look for Sinclaiir Ave..turn right about a mile and hop on 429 south...have 25 cents ready....take the short trip to I-4 and then the short trip to 27 south..

Be sure and stop at one of our favorite non Disney restaurants, the PUB just a mile south of I-4 on 27 on the right side....great Fish and Chips, Shepherds Pie, and other British fare plus good American choices....

Those are places that would match Celebration and Orange County if he want a new experience....

Enjoy...Ted

I just played Mystic Dunes in January while staying at Windsor Hills and we loved it! Great course...often rated the #2 course in the Orlando area, and there are lots of PGA level / top rated courses in the area! I've never seen sand traps so big in my life, wow!!

The only downside was the annoying timeshare salespeople taking guests on tours around the golf course...and for some reason they've never learned to be quiet on a golf course...they were all talking quite loudly. If you've paid $165 to play a round of golf and you're any good, this is not acceptable, we had to call the ranger, one actually started arguing with us when we kept telling him "shhh!". The resort itself seems more focused on selling timeshares than being a true place for the golfers right now...they have their priorities a little out of whack if you ask me.....if the keep doing this kind of thing the golfers will stop coming...then it's going to be a lot harder to sell timeshares in a golf oriented community!!

Anyhow, another important Mystic Dunes tip...in the Windsor Hills Resort welcome center (where you get the pool pass prox cards) there are discount cards...Windsor Hills residents / guests get a big discount on fees there with this card, and they're free, be sure to pick one up!!
