I've been reading that many of DIS members are concerned about how big of a memory is needed for their trip.

My "tips" are based on my 4MP camera which can also be applied to any other resolution.

1. Realize that you won't print most of the pictures at 8"x10" or larger.
2. Realize that you will print most of the picture at 4"x6"
3. Realize that most of the pictures will end up on CD to be viewed on a PC monitor.

After realizing the 3 points above you gotta do the following:

1. Unless you think there is a slightest chance that you'll blow the picture to humongous sizes, set your default resolution at 2MP superfine setting. This setting will allow you to print as large as 5"x7", yet won't take more than 1.5Mb per image.

2. For pictures you know for sure you'll view on your monitor, there is no need for 2MP standard setting. This setting will still allow you to print as large as 4"x6", yet won't take more than 1 Mb per image.

3. At the end of the day, spend about 15 minutes to browse through your pictures and take away the ones that are definitely bad. If in doubt, KEEP the picture.

Based on my personal experience and calculation, in a very worst case scenario, you'll NEVER need more than 512 Mb memory for an 8-day trip.

Another tip, if $$ permits, get four 128Mb cards rather than one 512Mb card. This lessens the chance for you losing all your pictures in the case of the memory card being damaged.

Hope it helps.

never knew it was so complicated....we always have our laptop with us on vacation, so we bring 2 128 cards- 1 for each digi cam..and then upload them at night in the hotel...then burn them onto a cd..therefor during vacation, I have them on CD and also on my harddrive on the laptop...

I have heard horror stories of different digi cam upload stations...never will my card go near one of those!

I agree on the 4 128 cards too...much "nicer" (for lack of better word) to lose 1 days pictures, rather than 4 if the card is misplaced.

Good info!

tee hee! Yes, if you have laptop then none of the tip matters :p

With me, I try to avoid computers when I'm on vacation. Dealing with 4 computer stations simultaneously each day in the studio makes me pull all my hair if I have to deal with PC again.

Besides... I'll be packing my PDA (plus charger), Camcorder (plus charger), Digital camera plus wide-converter and tele-converter (plus charger), a set of GMRS (plus charger)... I don't think I can carry more electronic stuff with me from Toronto to Orlando ;)

unfortunately, or fortunate for us, I guess...we bring 2 laptops- with DVD players, Auto adapters, and headphones...it makes the 22 hour drive with the 2 DD's MUCH quieter!!!

Sounds like you DO have enough electronics to pack already!
