Hi all,
I just needed to share my total sikedness! (I think I just created a new word). I'm a nurse at a Medical Center in Boston. We all just recently received e-mails that any nursing conferences we go to will be reimbursed yearly, up to $5,000 dollars per year. That's not even the best part. I found a 5 day nursing conference that is being held at The Grosvenor resort on Hotel Plaza BLVd. Even though it's not on site, it's still awesome!!
The conference is 5 days but.....the conference runs Mon-Fri from 8am-12pm then all the rest of the time is mine! My flight, Hotel room, transportation to and from the airport, rental car and conference are paid for 100% by my job. I plan to go the last week of June and bring my husband and kids along. We will already have our annual passes for our trip in April at Pop Century/OKW (can't wait, it will be our first time at each) so all we will have to pay for is the flights for Hubby and kids. We also got the DDE with our annual passes so that will save on food too!!! I bet all of my fellow collegues will be going to seminars in places like Hawaii, the caribean, ect. But me....I choose Disney!! When I tell people this they think I'm crazy but I know all of you will understand. Just had to share with people who care!

That at least starts to explain why a tiny screw in my wrist cost $1,100 (just for the actual screw!) and my health insurance premium goes up each year at 5X the rate of inflation... :)

Geez, I think I'll transfer to BMC!!!

Thanks for being a nurse and that 5k might be the best way to make their staff happiest for a relatively small amount of money.

I want my nurses to be happy motivated nurses!

No that would be Malpractice insurance and unpaid medical services. (FREELOADERS) Not to mention ER abuse. Don't forget your paying for all the illegals to. Nurses like school teachers are NOT overpaid by any stretch. No I'm not a nurse or teacher..I make, more with less education than either proffesion, and would not want either job!
OP Have fun on your trip! I mean conference..and if you have to tack an extra couple bucks on the bill next time you save a life.

MagikMom.....

:dance3: SUPER NEWS !! :dance3:

Have a great time!! :thumbsup2

Knew I should have continued with my nursing career...

I've done two conferences down at Disney World, and really enjoyed them. Each of the events I attended reserved a park for after hour usage for conference attendees. Best was the 3 hour event at the MGM Studios with all you can eat turkey legs and all you can drink beer included. I deliberately avoided the Tower of Terror for the last hour. Not because of me, but I was fearful of all of the people around me :-)

I might be going to another trade show this October, hope to make it work. My work actually tried to get me to go to one last October at the last minute, but I was out of the country and could not get the routing flights to Orlando to work.

you are exactly right, Last night I had to find a patient on the computer to do a post op on a jose garcia and there were 43 jose garcias staying at a 200 bed hospital at the same time. (who pays the bills when you can't track down people because of fake names and addresses)

I go every other year to WDW for nursing conferences. Some are on property too. be careful with your DVC points as you can not be reimbursed cash for using points. It is a great time.

I agree. You are exactly correct. That is a major part of the problem. The other part that inflates healthcare costs are all the things associated with the non-market healthcare system we have these days. In short I mean the customer (patient) is not the one that pays the bills (normally). Its either the government or some big anonymous insurance company. We need to get rid of the ridiculous legal rulings and freeloaders as you say and we need to change the system to where PATIENTS pay their own bills just like when you get work done on your car. Yes you have insurance for major accidents, etc, but can you imagine how much an oil change would cost if jiffy lube billed your insurance company and only charged you a $10 co-pay? That is partially what has happened with health care. Of course "change the system" is easy to say, but almost impossible to implement, especially untill we get costs down. Most people don't know or even care what their Dr charges for a vist, they only know that is just costs them $15 or whatever. I don't mean to imply that the Dr. has simply jacked up his fees. It's more complicated than that. Google something called "Payment at time of service" or "PATOS care" sometime. It's a growing trend among some doctors that have started no insurance/no medicare offices. simply a provider/customer relationship. They have much lower costs and hence don't need to charge patients as much. Still need to fix the "jackpot justice" lawsuit situation however to truly balance things.

Actually it's a much larger debate than we should discuss here so I'll shut up now - no more econimics posts!. As far as nurses, they seem to do 10X the work that the doctors do. I wish more of my hospitall bills went to them also. They deserve it. Enjoy your trip!

WOW! Guess y'all got a little off topic here.

OP - Have a great conference. Have an even better time at WDW.

That is great! I'm sure you are going to enjoy it. Last year my boss had a conference at the Crown Royal and said would I want to come to Florida (all paid by him) because he would like to see Disney. Of course I said yes. I did not fall off the truck. I stayed at POR and he used his Delta miles to book our fllight. He went to his conference, I hit the Disney parks and then at night we would meet and I showed him Epcot and Magic Kingdom. He has offered to pay for other trips for me - most recent London for February or Barcelona,Spain and Budapest for April. I told him thanks but no thanks I'll wait for another Disney trip.

That is a great. I am a nurse in NYC we only get $ 500 per year no hotels or plane fare paid. I am going in Jan. for a breastfeeding conference at raddison but I will be commuting from WDW. Gotta get the use of my AP. Kids will be joining me for MLK weekend.

That is so cool! I keep waiting for one of dh's conferences to be in Orlando, so far he has gone to Scottsdale, AZ and to a couple of different cities in Virginia. He just got a postcard in the mail advertising one in Sacramento, I don't think that's close enough to Anaheim to make a disney trip out of it. Someday!

Have a great trip! :)

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone! I've been a nurse for almost 20 years now and this is the very first time I've EVER received a benefit like this. My husband and I work very, very, hard all year (he is a firefighter/EMT :firefight ) and we enjoy any break we can get. The medical center I work for wants to ecourage it's nursing staff to LEARN as much as they can so they put a LOT of money in the nursing budget (not the medical center budget) to encourage people to attend these conferences that they normally would not attend. I'm just happy I can attend one at my favorite place on earth, WDW!

This topic is not DVC specific and is being moved to the community board.

My wife has a conference in Anaheim for Certified Athletic Trainers in 2007. Despite the fact that she's an RN now, she is keeping her Athletic Training certification and must maintain the CEUs. Apparently, they don't require CEUs in Oklahoma so her hospital doesn't reimburse for conferences.

Since everything is coming out of our pockets we are going to use some of our DVC points to stay at the Grand Californian for the 2 nights we are going to be there.
