Wanda Parks Declares War on Disney Shanghai

Just watched CBS news and they just did a whole special on the richest man in China (Wang Jianlin)

Apparently this guy runs WANDA PARKS( similar to six flags i guess) and doesn't think Disney Shanghai is "Chinese" enough

Notes China is depending too much on outside influence and is embracing this whole concept of chinese nationalism

If Disney Shanghai doesn't take off, I seriously hope disney dismantles it and ships over the rides to USA where it will be greatly appreciated !

I'm really curious to hear how things go over there once the Park opens. I read an article on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/25/travel/shanghai-disneyland-etiquette-guide/) that described an 'etiquette guide' that was issued by their municipal government for the locals there - I hope they take note!

On the other hand, that new Tron ride would make a great replacement for Ellen's Energy Adventure!

Disney can't just abandon ship. Disney doesn't fully own this Chinese park. The Shanghai government is the majority owner.

There is also the issue of Disney IP characters showing up in Wanda parks recently:

So I think "Disney" would be in China whether Disney wanted it or not so they are probably hoping to work with the Chinese government to have better control over their IP there - and of course hopefully make a lot of money from a huge population with a growing middle class

From a business and political/global standpoint it is all pretty fascinating

Not sure if the Tron ride really fits as a replacement of Ellen's energy adventure (though something should replace the current ride). Personally I'd love to see the suspended rain forest coaster that was planned for going around the Land as part of projected Genesis that never happened.

That's true however not really much different than say time square in New York.

fully agree - and that was my first thought when I saw the characters ... but Time Square hasn't come out "declaring war" with Disney

That's the kind of comments the richest man in China will make. It's China its not America they are two vastly different places. However China hasn't "blindly" follow per Mickey Mouse. China is relatively unfamiliar with the Disney product except for a few properties.

Wanda owns AMC. Imagine if Disney cancelled viewings of Disney owned and distributed Properties at AMC theaters in the US. This is not a battle that Wanda can win. He loses on other fronts outside of theme parks.

If they haven't abandoned ship on Eurodisney/Disneyland Paris, Shanghai will be fine for decades to come regardless of how profitable it is.

I wonder if that is why Disney movies are not included in the AMC discount tickets? We used to be able to get gold and silver tickets at AMC for all movies, but now they have Green Tickets, and Disney movies aren't included.

He comes across as a very, very scared man, I would not take anything that he says too seriously. Look at those pictures of the Disney IP in his parks! I've seen WAY better Cosplayers in Disneyland Tokyo.

Yes, but there other factors involved in Paris that are not in play in Shanghai. Europe has long been in the Disney Marketing machine, where mainland China has not.

It makes money on the perifory. It feeds the Disney marketing of other products in Europe. It has a tangible value by benefiting other business units.
