Has anyone purchased a wall mural - the wall paper kind, not having someone paint one. I have been looking online and the average price is about $125. I was hoping to get away cheaper than this, but I really have no point of reference for it. My son wants his room redone with a space theme and I am trying to keep it as low budget as possible - but still have it look really cool.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

How funny, we just went from the space theme to football. I am having a wallpaper wall mural painted for me. It is a 3 ft. wide football helmet and it is costing me $50 plus $10 for shipping.

It's a bit of a bother, but you can do it yourself! If you have access to an overhead projector (I borrowed from my church), print out a scene (comic book works well) on an overhead and project it on the wall. Then use a pen or pencil for the outlines. Paint the areas in the colors you want, and, when dry, go over the lines with a broad marker -- it looks marvelous and professionally done.

I did one on my son's wall. We used the projector like a PP mentioned, but I just did a search for "dragon coloring pages" on google(we were doing a dragn mural) Traced it in pencil, then went over that in sharpie. Then we used paint pens for the smaller details and acrylic and latex paint for the larger areas. I even found some glow in the dark paint to the dragon's eyes. I put his name over the mural. Sadly DS is 15 and is begging me to paint over it. I guess he IS a little too old for it now.

My sister paints murals for much cheaper than the price you are finding for cling on's. If you are in the Wisconsin area pm me, I'm sure she would love to do one for you, if not, have you tried asking on Craigslist for "starving artists"?

I did an entire under the sea/ariel room for DD. We moved and I obviously had to leave my masterpiece behind.

I got smarter and purchased canvas material (60") at Joann's (with a 40% off coupon) had DH make a frame to attach the material that became my canvas.
Then use the overhead projector/image method to get the outline and paint away.
I used this method for a 'new' ariel image, a Thomas the Tank Engine, and a Princess Jasmine/Nala image. The canvas was approx 5 ft by 5 ft.. plenty big and removable when they 'grow' up. You can remove the frame and roll up the canvas and keep/store.

We did the wall paper kind of mural for my son's ocean room...I would never do that again. You have to trim it to get the right dimensions and it was so hard getting up. It shrinks a little after getting wet, so trying to put the different panels up was a pain! Unless you have someone do it for you, I would skip it and do the projection on the wall. That is all I do now!

Hmmm...I was hoping to get away from the painting for 2 reasons - I am home on maternity leave and have a 4 week old and a 5 year old so finding time to paint what I want is going to be difficult. And I was trying to find one that was more "realistic" looking - planets and galaxies and stuff.

I currently have their room done in an "outdoor" them - trees, grass, lake, clouds, etc. I painted the whole thing, it's going to break my heart to paint over it and move him from what I had done as his nursery to a big boy room *sniff sniff* I feel the tears welling up already. :guilty:

My ds room was Mickey and it broke my heart to go over it all, but they do grow up..............take plenty of pictures, which I did not do :sad2: I just remember all the painstaking time and effort that entire room took :lmao:, now...I am thankful to "see" the floor, rather than his dumped clothes........:lmao:

Check etsy.com for wall decals. A quick search for "space wall decal" returned a lot of different things in a lot of different styles. Best thing, they're removable so you can easily change the look or take them with you if you move.

Some of them can even be personalized with your little one's name.

A couple of cute ones:

Good luck!

ETA: Oops... just saw the "realistic" request.

I'd look for the vinyl wall decals, supposed to be removable. I am looking at getting one for our entry hall. They are very expensive, but I've found what I want for tons less on eBay, so whatever you go with, check there. I was looking at one that on the site was almost $200 and found it on eBay for $20 :cool1:

I found tons of wall decals at our Dollar Tree. I got several of the cute saying to go up around the house. I have seen almost the exact same ones online for $30-50. My girls wanted flowers so I got some really nice floral ones there and we are going to paint the walls. The ones I have put up are easy to put up and remove without messing up the paint. How about painting his room and getting smaller decals with planets and stars, like the ones posted above.

Yes, ebay. The generic fatheadz......no issues, cheap (under 40 bucks).

Ooh! Thank you! I did check ebay, but didn't see all of the ones you posted! The one is one I had seen but for 2x as much. And the other one on etsy of the planets in the solar system is nice too.

While it will make me sad to paint over the stuff, I will have fun putting the room together. Going to go to Walmart and Joann's and look for some fabric to make curtains later this week! :thumbsup2
