I understand tha these are available to buy (or rent) in Orlando. Are they called tracphones.....does anyone have any experience of them or something similar....we will be a party of six ..grand & grandma...mum and dad...and 2 young girls....it would be really good to split up at times ..to do diffeent things with the children but still be able to keep in touch...'specially to let mum and dad go off on some of the more wild rides

We borrowed a set of Walkie-talkies from some-one I work with for our last visit & found them useful. If we couldn't borrow them a again would buy some when we get there.

Sorry I don't know any technical details but I'm sure than ones bought over here in Uk aren't suitable to use in Florida. I know others on the board will be able to help.

UK walkie-talkies will work in the US and vice versa; it's just they are illegal to use in the wrong country as the frequencies are otherwise allocated.

Tracfones are not walkie-talkies but mobile 'phones.

We have purchased a couple of cheap ($29.99) and they are refurbished Nokias. They come with 'phone, US mains charger and some free minutes. You need to register them via the internet - takes a few minutes - or maybe the store will do this for you. Top up cards are availble everywhere and easy to add units. When the 'phone is regisered, it is given a local number which is displayed on the 'phone. They can be used anywhere in the US - outside the registered local area you pay more for the call (roaming). On the next trip you will need to re-register the phone and you will get a new number. This is really habndy if your next trip is to a different part of the US,as your new area becomes your local area.

the only downsides are that being older technology, a full battery charge does not last as long as a modern 'phone and it costs you units to recieve calls as well as make them.

We went to Walmart and bought some walkie talkies a couple of years ago, cheap and reliable but if you do go that roue make sure you get them with plenty of channels, we had 13 and found it a struggle to get through to the other party
