Is there anyone that is planning on WALKing the 2007 half? I have read many threads and it seems like most are runners.
Is there anyone who successfully walked the 2006 half? Any advice?
I'm just beginning to get back into shape and would like to set the half-marathon as a goal. Can it be done in six months? Anyone with past experience to share about beginning a walking program?

Thanks!

Hello, Momoftwogirls!
Yes, there are lots of people walking the half as well as walking the full! If you will check out the welcome page on our weekly WISH Walking/Running Club you'll see lots of links to places with great info for beginners. Quite a few of us are following John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals or MfM. He's a former couch potato who started, at age 40 and over weight, to run again. But there are lots of other plans. LisaLovesPooh has some great advice in her answer on the thread "Different Training Programs...confused" that you might want to check out.
There are a lot of beginners in the WISH Walking/Running Club, but there are also seasoned veterans who share their knowlege. Those that I'm calling seasoned veterans would laugh, but, hey, they've already DONE it at least once!
I'll be walking the DL half in September, then doing a half again in 2007 at WDW. I just started "training to train" in January as I have never been an athletic person. I used the MfM program to get me started. I completed the Minnie Marathon (15K) in May maintaining a 15 minute pace which was just unthinkable in January! The half will only require a 16 minute pace, but there will be lots more people. You've got plenty of time..or as Honeibee says..only 200 days!!! :rotfl2:

I walked the half last January, my first ever event, motivated by turning 50. I followed the MFM 14 week training program and I loved it. Prior to the start of the official 14 week program I walked several times a week, training to train! A couple of things...make sure you have good shoes, even if you are "only" walking, they are important! And for me it was important to not try to do too much too fast, that is how some people get discouraged and give up. The slow but sure method worked for me, and I have a terrific Donald medal to show for it. Completing the half is one of the highlights of my life. I am not adequately eloquent to describe the feeling of accomplishment I had when crossing the finish line, but let me tell you it was just amazing. And my medal is as every bit as shiny as the ones received by people who finished way sooner than me. Just keep on putting your steps in and you will do fine!
