Walking out of Teppan Edo because there is no fried rice . . .

All of which is exactly why they post the complete menu OUTSIDE the restaurant--

It's their choice. The restaurant doesn't serve fried rice. Benihana and places like that do serve fried rice (apparently because people like it, not because it is traditionally Japanese), so apparently they expected this place would be the same. Looks like the fried rice was so important to them that they decided to leave rather than settle for steamed rice. At least they didn't make a fuss and yell or anything.

While I would never leave a restaurant for that reason we do not go to Teppan Edo because of it...I miss having the soup, salad and shrimp appie and of course the fried rice....that being said we make sure we go to our local hibachi on the way home from WDW and leave Teppan Edo open for someone else :goodvibes

I think this is beyond strange. A couple of weeks ago, we had an ADR at Teppan Edo. The other family sitting with us was studying the menu and asked if they had fried rice. They were told 'no', in Japan, it's customary to serve steamed rice and that they couldn't get fried rice. Well, not only were they disappointed with this news, but they actually made the decision to leave the restaurant. Needless to say, our service was slowed down while another family was shown to our table, they had a chance to review the menu, etc.

We were in shock that not having fried rice (doesn't everyone know this? :confused3) was an actual deal breaker for them. Okay, deal breaker if finding out ahead of time, I guess, but a deal breaker after you're already seated? Just thought that was bizarre. What do you think?

People are nuts. :confused3

I prefer brown rice over white from a health standpoint, but I'll eat white if that's what I'm served in a restaurant. People shouldn't eat fried rice anyway... it's very caloric. :rolleyes1

Maybe they had kids with them and fried rice is the only thing they would eat?

I am with you... my DD wanted to eat there on our next trip... but when we found out no soup/salad/hibachi rice... we decided to eat elsewhere...

I don't see anything wrong with leaving a restaurant because it does not have what you want on the menu. I also don't think it's necessary for every person to peruse a menu before going into a restaurant. If they made the assumption that there was fried rice, and they don't eat white rice (just like a friend of mine), then what would you have suggested they do? Not everyone is open to "new experiences" - how many threads have there been on these boards that start out, "I have a picky eater"????

I've seen people walk out for a multitude of reasons - no fried rice, no wine, no beer, out of something that was on the menu, too expensive, whatever. As long as they don't make a scene, or complain, or make anyone else miserable, it's none of my business. Even if that means that the restaurant had to seat other people so your meal was "delayed," it's better than sitting with strangers who are miserable!

No, everyone doesn't know this and I don't see why everyone would. Not everyone looks at the menu when entering the restaurant either. Seems like a non-event to me.

I agree ... soup/salad/hibachi rice are standard at every hibachi restaurant I have ever been to. If I had not been on these boards I would have been surprised when I was given the menu...
and I most likely would not have stopped to re4ad the menu outside also because those restaurants usually have standard menus...

Hmmm...I for one am kinda shocked about the lack of soup/salad/fried rice at Teppan Edo. We have a reservation for it on our upcoming August trip. Since we are so accustom to having these things at our local hibachi restaurants I never even thought to look over the Teppan Edo menu. My thought was...if you have eaten at one hibachi restaurant you know what to expect at them all. Apparently not.

I guess this is something I will have to discuss with DH. While missing these things would not cause us to get up and leave from the meal, knowing this info before hand, may cause us to rethink our ADR.

well i believe they have soup and salad..it will just cost you extra.. not included as is usually standard

I certainly did not know this - that they don't have it at Teppan Edo or that it's not customary in Japan. They serve fried rice at our local Japanese hibachi restaurant (probably because it's popular), so I think I would have expected it. It would not be a deal breaker for me though and I definitely would not get up and leave, that part is weird.

Same here. I've wanted to try Teppan Edo for awhile. I only like fried rice but could do without it. Good news for grandson tho, he only likes steamed rice, lol.

:scared1: I'm so glad I saw this thread b/c we were trying to decide between Via and Teppan for our next trip. I guarantee if we went in and there was no soup/salad/rice we would have left also and I guess had people talking about how "strange" we are. I eat at hibachi places all the time and I honestly just assumed that this would be included with you meat selection.

Why is it strange to leave a restaurant if you find out they are not serving something you want? Were these people acting like idiots and yelling and telling off the waitress or something? Or did they politely excuse themselves and go find somewhere else to spend about 100$ on dinner. Totally not a big deal!

:confused3:confused3 I also find it strange how many people post here about awful meals and yet do not bring it to the restaurants attention !! :confused3:confused3

If a person is not happy with what the restaurant is offering, they have every right to leave before ordering.

We have a ton of hibachi restaurants here, and they all serve fried rice. I can't tell you how many people I have seen order a double-portion of fried rice, so I know it is why a lot of people go to hibachi restaurants. None of the hibachi restaurants here serve noodles either, so you do get something different at Teppan Edo.

I will admit to being surprised when I went to Teppan Edo. While I had looked at the menu before making the reservation, I didn't pay that much attention to the sides.

This wasn't at any restaurant in WDW but at a restaurant we use to eat at in Toronto we once left because they took the same thing we had always ordered off their menu. Well when looking at their menu for something else we didn't see anything we would like to eat, so we decided to leave and not stay to have a bad meal.

I think it is a little strange because it is over a side dish, not any change or difference in the entrees. To me, that's like booking Le Cellier for a nice steak dinner and then walking out because the cream cheese potatoes aren't being served. :confused3
