My husband and I and our 2 small children will be at fort wilderness next week for our first camper trip to disney. We're planning on mostly walking with the double stroller to and from the boat launch and the busses. I haven't seen much about people doing this. We are both very fit (in fact, my husband will be competing in the triathlon next Sunday), so we don't aniticpate it being a big deal. Just wondering if anyone does this, or what the distances will be from place to place within fort wilderness.
thanks!

This one is for Shan man to answer,,he should be along after a while to help.

We have stayed in the 800 Loop across from the meadows trading post and used to walk all the time to the dock. We also walked the WL and once took the dirt path along the lake and saw lots of deer close up..

FW is relatively small and you can walk everywhere in a half hour or less. Just stay to the walkways. IMHO you will enjoy FW more walking ever where.

Thanks all! I was just getting nervous, as it seems like most everyone uses golf carts or the internal busses. We aren't planning on renting a golf cart, and would just prefer to walk. Getting excited!

:welcome: To the Camping Board!!! Slip on them walking shoes, and have a wonderful time! Oh, and don't forget the pictures! We like pictures! :thumbsup2

There are always plenty of folks walking the sidewalks around the Fort, many pushing strollers, not a problem!!

it's a mile between the settlement and the outpost, then another mile from the settlement to the lodge. I've walked/biked/scooted across the fort several times and I'm far from being "fit".

We always walk to the settlement. Loved the time in the early a.m., stopping at TE for breakfast (before it went bad) and strolling back to our site. Really wish more people would start walking instead of using those golf carts that seem to be an epidemic (IMHO).

when our kids were little and we had a double stroller we walked everywhere at the fort it was a lot easier than taking the bus, from the boat launch to loop 800 is about a 12 minute walk

I have done it different ways in the past. We usually stay in the 100 loop, so getting to the dock was a short distance away. When we took the bus elsewhere, I would get on first with the folded stroller, backpack, diaper bag, & camcorder while DW took care of getting the kids on & seated. Since on many of the buses, there was no way to sit with that much stuff, I just went to the rear & stood by the back door. That way I was out of the way & I would be first off the bus and could set up the stroller while my DW got off.

However, sometimes we would just wait to get to the park & rent a stroller. I know it was a waste of money since we had one, but it was also convenient.

But overall, walking around the Fort is quite pleasant.

We camped in the 1500 loop and walked everywhere with our girls in the double stroller. It was much easier than trying to fold/unfold the stroller and haul it on the bus. The only "problem" we had was at the sidewalk bridge right across the road from the 1500 loop bus stop; one of the poles that is in place to keep golf carts off of the bridge makes it a tight squeeze for the stroller. We had to do some maneuvering, but we made it through.

We are stroller users(set of toddler twins) and golf cart users. We walk every morning at 7 (there is atleast 15 of us) and we use the golf cart to run errands, get mugs filled, and catch the boats.
I will say this year we all noticed there was a ton of carts they are being drivin more recklessly and by younger kids with no adults, that being said just be safe and you will have a great time hoof'n it as my Dad says.
And yes and in the by-laws of the agreement you checked when you signed up you must document all travels to WDW with plenty of pictures.

We always walk, which is why our 5 year old will still need his stroller this year. We enjoy it, up until the 7th or 8th day, then we've had enough walking.

We stay in the full hook up looks all the time and either walk or bike. The only time we use the bus is if it is pouring down rain. It's not that big a deal. You should be fine. Have a great time. We will be there in August for our 30th anniversary. Our first trip was with a 18month, 3 year, and 5 year. So We have done the strollers also.:earsboy:
