Hi
after the incident at DTD, i'm a bit nervous about the walk between SSR and DTD, its a real shame as was looking forward to this bit.

How have other found the walk?, is the walk way well lit? are there lots of people about? which bit of DTD does the walkway come out in?

I know you can also get the boat?- how regualally does this run and is it direct?

any advice would be great
Thanks for your help
Ruth

There are two walkways to SSR- one to/from the Marketplace and one/to from the West Side.

We just got back from our trip to SSR (6/1- 6/8). I always felt VERY safe on the walkways. There always seemed to be lots of people on the walkway to/from Marketplace even in the evening.

I've only used the walkway from West Side twice and at 2 in the morning both times coming back from PI. Walking back from the West Side there was a security guard checking our resort id's at a post near the beginning of the golf course so this made me feel much safer.

Unfortunately, you can't be too safe anywhere these days.

The walkway is not well lighted and at least one section of it is marked that it closes at dark. I would not suggest using that section of the walkway after dark (or the OKW/DD walkway either - which isn't lighted either and is also designated as "Closed" after dark).

The boats run every 30 minutes from 11am until 4pm and then every 15 minutes in the evenings. The boat stops at SSR on it's way to OKW and then again on it's way from OKW back to DD.

During the daylight hours, the walkway is a great way to access DD - it comes out near the DD Marketplace bus stops. There is also a walkway that crosses the golf cart bridge and then circles around the DD West Side parking lost along the lake. It ends up near Cirque. I wouldn't suggest that one either after dark, even though it is lighted much of the way.

Last month we saw security on bikes patrolling the walkways. You need to do what makes you comfortable. I for one feel that Disney does a excellent job with security at the parks. How many people walk around Disney every year? 40 million? Unfortunately bad things can happen to good people in any location, at Disney or at home.

Both walks are nice day or night, just use the same common sense you would use anywhere. Don't travel alone, don't walk up t a strangers car,and if it will make you feel more secure carry a whistle. This abduction happened in the parking lot and only after the victims went up to the car and actually got in. Never approach the car and NEVER NEVER get in the car not even at gun point, your best chace for flight is in the beginning before the creep has control of the events. Crooks look for the easiest target, don't let it be you. Enjoy your trip and don't allow this type of thing to alter your plans.

I agree with Doc, I would never walk the paths at night. Don't take any chances. Especially women or kids/teens.

I would not be suprised to find Stepped up security patrols around Downtown Disney and the SSR area. Disney cannot be happy about this national story in the headlines. I bet you are much safer in the DTD parking lot today than you would have been last week. This may be the last time we hear of such an event at that location due to all of the attention this will get from Disney and Orange County. Tourisim is too important to this region.

I have a photo walk in 3 parts, starting at the path from OKW (where it meets SS, and the DD area) and then making the circle through the west side, through the Marketplace and back through SS:

I have never felt unsafe at DD, even at night - but crime can happen anywhere. I'm seeing that there are some doubts on what happened the other evening, so we'll see if it was a true story. I have mentioned elsewhere, I don't tend to wear ipods and such when I'm out walking/running, I like to be aware of my surroundings. Disney is not immune to crime, but we had 50 million tourists here last year and the chance of something happening is very small.

I agree with Doc, I would not recommend the walkways after dark. Especially if you have been shopping and carrying packages back to your room.

Of the two paths I prefer the one that starts near the Downtown Disney bus terminal and goes along Lake Buena Vista drive to Congress Park area of SSR.

It is nice to hear security was checking resort IDs at night to enter SSR and I agree that I am sure Disney will increase security in the area.

I would also agree on not going on paths too late at night. :) (though I do feel less comfortable in some other areas I've been on property during the day, I try to be careful of not feeling too isolated).

I'm not as hyper as Doc. I've taken the path via Marketplace several times at all hours and all alone. There is a small nature path in SSR, but its off the main walkway. It's closed after dark because there is no lighting. I guess someone could hide out there, but more likely you'll run into something from the animal world.

The rest of the walkway is well lit and borders the water with buildings on the other side.

In all honesty, I found the walkway back from the ferry dock at SSR more isolated. It's back behind AP and an employee lot. After 9pm it's pretty dead there. I bear to the left and take the route by the clubhouse and Turf Club. It's shorter and gets me to populated areas quicker.
