We are flying in at noon the day before our cruise and staying at the MCO Hyatt. Can anyone recommend things to do around the airport / hotel or within walking distance (within 5 km)? I'm traveling with hubby and 7 & 9 year old. Thanks!

I don't think there's really anything within walking distance. Airports tend to be out, away from things. Especially international ones.

Shmoo is correct, MCO is fairly isolated. Pretty much everything near the airport that could potentially be walk-able (keeping in mind that there are no sidewalks ect, so you would be walking on the side of some quite busy roads) are accessories to the airport such as parking, car rentals, and hotels.

The Hyatt has a great pool! And there are lots of shops to check out in the airport itself. There are two different Disney stores.

When we stay at the MCO Hyatt, we just plan on hanging out at the pool, shopping and eating in the airport.

As several of the PP's have noted there is no way to walk to anything from the airport. The terminal is quite a long distance (2+ miles) away from the closest restaurants (North exit, route 436) and even further from any real shopping opportunity. The roadway has no sidewalks and in some places not even a grassy shoulder on which a person could walk.

You don't have that many hours really, so pool is always a highlight for kids that age. Also, lots of shopping so fun to browse. It's fun to my kids to gets hot chocolate at Starbucks and pick a book/activity from one of the bookstores and hang out in the general bustle of the airport and read or people watch. Might be a fun activity to make up stories about people or families as most are there to travel: "look, they are carrying x, I wonder where they are/ have been traveling" as an example. In my experience, these kind of open ended questions lead to 10-15 min conversations, stories mostly created by the kids. Time will go fairly fast! Enjoy.

I live in Orlando area and agree with other posters that there is NO way to walk to anything at all outside the walls of the airport. Zero. And IMO one would be risking their life to attempt it. Folks drive like crazy on those roads that circumnavigate the airport terminals. (including me, I s'pose…)

There is a lot to see and do inside the airport. I didn't know about the ABC Store delivery, good to know Pcorvette. But when we lived out of state for a few years, Mama2lilprincesses, we once stayed overnight at the MCO Hyatt pre-cruise and found it quite nice, including their amenities. Quiet rooms too.

Hyatt is a great place to stay but yes there is nothing in walking distance. Look for shuttles, there may be one that can take you to the Florida Mall which isn't far away and the Crayola Experience is located there for the kiddos. Or just enjoy the pool, always a good choice! :D

There is lots of shopping within a few minutes drive from the airport, but you would need to cab or look into a 1 hour car rental. The airport is on the other side of a large, busy highway from the shopping areas, and the road that accesses the airport is also very heavily traveled and you would have to walk on an overpass. I wouldn't do it alone nevermind with kids.

But I love to get to the airport early because of all the great shops. Disney, Universal and Sea World all have stores at the airport. If you did do a one day car rental to go to a liquor store, there is a fantastic park on a lake (Moss Park) about 15 minutes away.
