We are heading back to DL in November and this time we are bringing my brother and his family for their very first trip. Excitement is building. I was curious you see a lot of families using those new fangled walkie talkie things, was wondering what your opinion of them is? Is there one model better then others? We thought they might be helpful for us to check and see how each other is making out if we become seperated.

We tried to use them on one trip. We didnt find it a very effective way to communticate. They are hard to hear with the park noise. You end up hearing bits and peices of other peoples conversations, etc.

We found cell phones to be the best way to stay in touch.

Agreement here...ours didn't work very well either, it was hard to hear and we picked up other people all the time. We used our cell phones when we lost contact. An idea you might find helpful, we all decide on a meeting place when we enter the park. That way if any of us get separated they know where to go to be "found". :sunny:

We also used them this last trip on ocassion but had to keep them off most of the time because of other people's conversations getting through....They did do the trick when needed but if you have an alternative, like cell phones, use them instead!

we used them a few years ago at WDW...I also agree about other conversations interfering. Since DH's whole family is now on Verizon, I imagine that we'd use cell phones instead...

I would recommend cell phones...

We actually love ours. We usually travel with large groups so it's easier to use walkie talkies - you can communicate with three or four different families at once.

The key for us was getting the motorolas with codes. There are 22 different channels with 38 different codes on each one. They block out voices not on your channel AND code. With that many channel combinations to choose from, we have never had a problem finding a channel that no one is on.

They work very well, and we are amazed at the distance they work on.

We've used ours, but they were more annoying than helpful. Even with all the channels and sub-channels, we were constantly changing because of everyone else's conversations coming through. Plus, the noise of the park made it hard to hear. Our cell phones were much, much easier to use. We still use our walkie-talkies at other events, but not at DL.

My dd took hers last year.LOOOADS of fun! Stepping on people(a c.b. term). Constantly saying"WHAT?". I did manage to talk to my son, from the hotel,he had just gotten off BTM. Other that ,totaly useless(imho). ;)

We tried, but we switched to cell phones within the first two hours. Way to much crosstalk and static.

We use them when we are there for our summer trip. It helps to a point. We like to join in on the other convos when we are bored. Some people hate it when we do that. It's fun listening to parents yell at their kids also.

I find them to be pretty useless, Too many people trying to use too little air space.

Dh and I are always text messaging each other, and we found that helpful at Disneyland, too. So we didn't even consider walkie talkies. My only "complaint" about texting is that it's so loud, I can't hear my cool Disney ringtones. I have to "set to stun", and make it vibrate only. Oh, well. At least we could find each other.

Oh, and if you are in line in for Indy, you can't text out. We tried.
