We just returned from a Sept trip and have decided that planning dinner time 180 days in advance is too much for us. We like to do half days at the parks and return to the hotel for pool/bath/rest time but found with this trip, I made the reservations too early. We are going back in January and wondering what reservation availability is if we waited until 1-2 to decide what to do for dinner? I don't mean Bog or Ohana but what about Kona, Wave, other resort restaurants, etc. I'm hoping since it is not during "Free Dining" that it would be a little easier. Thanks!

YMMV, but we went for a few weekdays during the pre-Marathon week in 2014. We booked the trip a week before going, since we lived in FL at the time. I booked a couple of ADR a few days before we went, and we ate at Citrico's and Kona at reasonable times for dinner and CP for lunch. We walked into Brown Derby at lunch, with no wait whatsoever. You might want to look at ADR availability as the trip gets closer and go ahead and make some if times start to disappear, but you may be fine if it isn't a busy week.

As long as you aren't looking for super popular places you should find options. I'd be hesitant about "walk-up" as opposed to checking the app or calling. We were at the Plaza Sunday and they were telling people there were 2 to 3 hour waits when there were reservations available on the app in about 20 min.

If you are flexible with where you are willing to eat, you should be fine. We make day-of ADR's a lot and, except for one evening on one trip (the night before a holiday), we have always found an ADR available and sometimes they are very good ones!

You will still find restaurants like Ohana, Tusker House and Liberty Tree Tavern to be booked solid in January. We've traveled many times and have had trouble getting reservations at the popular restaurants. But we have also had no problem with last minute ADR's at places like the Wave for dinner. Usually checking for reservations the day before or the morning of works best. :)

I couldn't agree more. We book day of reservations all the time and as long as you are flexible on the where Disney dining can be your proverbial oyster.
